Next dates for Egypt paramotor tours at the bottom of the description!
We’ve been extremely busy over the past month but I finally got some time to sit down and go through the video footage from our Egypt paramotor trip and I’m really excited to share it. We brought back roughly 200GB of footage and I've only just begun to process it...
We owe a debt of gratitude to many friends - thank you Emilia Plak for the invitation, Hany Shaker, Ammar Mohamed and the amazing team at Sky Sports Egypt for making this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity possible, Momen Yousef AlKamoni and the kind folks at AirBus Tours for your hospitality and help throughout our travel, Egyptologist Farag El Sayed for your time and wisdom, the airxppg.com team for our pre-travel training, and Chad Bastian and the Mini-Plane USA team for our last-minute parts needs.
Unforgettable experience. Can't wait to return. Next time - Luxor, the Red Sea, perhaps Al Fayoum for a World Slalom Championship in a few years? We've got some training to do.

It was wild - we can't wait for the next trip. I posted the next dates for flying the Pyramids along with the costs in the description - they'll fly them 4 times in 2019. Rental gear is available, but if you grab a new fuel tank, fuel lines, and carb specifically for the trip, you can easily (legally) take your Top 80 with you. Unbelievable experience.

Maybe Paramotors are how they got the blocks up so high to build the pyramids! I'm kidding of coarse.

Notice the faint lines on each of the 4 flat sides of the Pyramid faces the faint line that run in the middle of each face. That's the clue of how they built the Great Pyramid. The lines are where the stones were pulled up with a Counterweight elevation lift with a Counterweight stone dropping at the opposite side

Hey Ron, thanks for the kind words! We made a trip home to northeast Ohio this week and got in a few below-freezing flights, but we were grounded most of the visit because of the high winds, too. I hope your 2019 is filled with great, safe flying!

Thank you for posting this. Very interesting! Btw, were you pulling brakes while on speedbar?
@TheTurtleGuy
@TheTurtleGuy 4 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it! The foot strap is an Apco kick-in strap, a little more common in the free flight world. It is connected to the harness, not the glider, and provides some support to the knees. Makes a world of difference on longer flights. Would never ever recommend speedbar and brakes! Most paraglider designs don't allow for it. Safe flying!

This is a very well done video! Instead of watching football, I'm watching flying vids on Xmas day! I have many questions. What was the temperature? What time did you launch? Is any if the original library at Alexandra left after the tragic fire? Which pyramid is the one that has the partial capstone left? Which is the youngest?
@TheTurtleGuy
@TheTurtleGuy 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Buzz, thanks for the compliment! We snuck a Christmas paramotor flight in here in Ohio - it was cold but great to get some air time. Most days the temperatures were in the 70s and 80s. We flew in the morning and evenings from 0730-1100 and 3:30 to sunset if I'm not mistaken. Air was laminar until the sun heated the ground, but most mornings we woke up to an inversion from the cool waters of the Nile - fog hung around until 10 A.M. buying us some flying time later than I'd have expected. The Pyramids sit on a plateau and the launch site is well-sheltered from the windward side of the plateau. Once you got in front of the Great Pyramid (the one without a smooth capstone) you were in reach of the air tumbling over the face of the plateau, but the strongest of the turbulence was on the lee of the pyramids themselves. You'll see there weren't many of us playing in the lee. The library at Alexandria has some very old books and I believe a million books in library circulation with room for 8 million books. It's the 30th largest library on the planet and the 6th largest French library. Unfortunately, I don't believe anything from the original library is housed there. If I'm not mistaken, the oldest pyramid (the Great Pyramid) lacks the capstone and the youngest Pyramid is one of the smaller you see on the plateau. There are a total of 9 pyramids in the area and several others within 10 miles.

I was born just very close to the pyramids & Mr. Sphinx . I miss my born place so much, but I can't go there at all, it's the harsh military dictatorship regime. I feel very jealous :-)))) (joke) , you are flying over my birth place & I can't go for some visit 😭😭😭

What are the tripods on top of some of the larger pyramids? Are they equipped with "live" web cams ? or measuring devices of some sort or other ? I noticed them on some not all. Did you notice them, too ? and did you ask anyone about them ?
@TheTurtleGuy
@TheTurtleGuy 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question, that was something we'd wondered as well when we made the first flight. We were told the metal object on the Great Pyramid was erected by astronomers in the late 1800s to show where the top of the missing capstone would have been. This helped them make measurements and observations to see if the pyramids were aligned with stars. It did look like they had a radio antenna on one of them, but I don't believe they have a source of power to transmit anything up there. I'm not aware of webcams on top, either.

were the motors brand new? how did you get them on the plane?? i need to do this
@TheTurtleGuy
@TheTurtleGuy 4 жыл бұрын
We opted to bring them with us, and that required us to buy new components to take and dispose of once we got there. Brand new fuel tanks, brand new carbeurators, new fuel lines, new air filters and air boxes, and new spark plugs. We also had to fly direct JFK-Cairo because most of the US domestic airlines forbid you to travel with a combustion engine as baggage. Egypt Air allowed it as sporting equipment with a declaration that we had opened up the engines and purged/cleaned them of all fuel vapors. Bottom line, these machines were extremely clean and not a scent of fuel. Our gliders we carried on with us sauciss-folded and in vacuum-sealed bags. We ended up bringing the carbeurators and air boxes back to the US with us after taking them apart and deep cleaning them. The fuel tanks we had to dispose of there though, so we were out about $200. With that much said, Egypt Airsports offers some decent rental equipment at a really reasonable price. For the hassle that it was flying with our equipment, I wouldn't hesitate to rent with them in the future, especially if they guarantee enough motors for the entire flying group. If you have any more questions about making a trip like this, shoot 'em our way, nothing to sell you but happy to help.

@TheTurtleGuy 5 жыл бұрын
www.icarustrophy.com/blog/2018/3/7/getting-your-paramotor-to-the-start-line We bought hockey gear bags and lots of bubble wrap and foam. Also bought brand new fuel lines, carbeurators, and fuel tanks. After a deep cleaning and airing the gear out we flew a direct flight to Egypt using the declarations paperwork in the Icarus Trophy link above. We used vacuum sealed bags for our gliders and packed them in a suitcase. The engines are not specifically banned by EgyptAir given that they don't qualify as hazardous cargo at that point. We left the used fuel tanks and fuel lines in Egypt and did a deep cleaning of the spare carburetors. Does that answer your question?

Hey Jed, yessir in the USA paramotors are ultralight aircraft and thus subject to very little regulation. Many other countries are the same. As far as aircraft go, these are some of the easiest to fly out there. We are limited to flying only in the best weather of course. Recommend finding a paramotor training school with a good reputation for safety to start this adventure. If you have any other questions, send them our way!

What was the ceiling cap to fly over that part ???
@TheTurtleGuy
@TheTurtleGuy 5 жыл бұрын
The cap was 2000 feet - at 2000 feet you're in the approach to Cairo International, so we stayed out of the way of the big planes and well-below. We were briefed to fly no lower than two thirds above the Great Pyramid and we were not permitted to touch them, of course... The pyramid tops are roughly 500 feet for scale.

@@TheTurtleGuy Wonderful thats not bad, I have a friend that works for Ozone and just gave me that guys info to set things up, it'll be awhile but it's in the books as long as they keep doing it, how big a fit did they throw with your gas tank ??? Some of my friends bleach the crap outta the tank and basically cover it in plastic if not just buy i new one to travel with...
@TheTurtleGuy
@TheTurtleGuy 5 жыл бұрын
@@XenoVI That's a great question - my recommendation is what we did - we ordered new gas tanks, new fuel lines and filter, and new carburetors (altogether about $250 or $300 total for each rig) and cleaned the paramotors pretty well. Depending on your paramotor model, you may be able to find a fuel bladder that costs significantly less. We discarded the fuel tanks, lines, and filters in Egypt but managed to clean the carburetors well enough to bring 'em back. If you're flying from the US, I'd recommend doing that and finding a direct flight and checking your airline policies. We drove several hours to fly direct from JFK instead of dealing with a connecting flight that wasn't gasoline powered engine friendly. EgyptAir was a long, cramped flight but they allow gasoline powered engines as long as there is absolutely no trace of fuel fumes as required by the IATA. These guys had the best advice for flying with gear as well: www.icarustrophy.com/blog/2018/3/7/getting-your-paramotor-to-the-start-line
