I agree. Looks like it was assembled and never used. And that cover kept it spotless, inside and out. You got a great deal there. 👍👍

Thanks Bob, I'm pretty happy about it. I don't get many great deals, but this was one I think.

that was possibly the best ebay heathkit buy I have ever seen. Absolutely stunning condition.
@greggsvintageworkshop89744 жыл бұрын
Thanks George, it was just one photo, not a clear one either, with no real description. Didn't mention the cover or anything. They were asking $45 and I offered $30 and they accepted. Dang had I known it was as nice as it was I would have snatched it up at $45, as I'm sure anyone would have! The best eBay purchase I've made I think.

That adapter you used is a UHF PL259 to BNC and mates with an SO239. Used mostly on HAM/CB antennas. I've done a similar modification on a few for some of my older gear I don't wish to update to BNC as well.

Yes I think it works out quite well and allows it to stay original. Thanks for watching!

Super clean IG-102! I have one of those 606 Dyno-Jet's in my arsenal! Good little tester!

Thanks Tim, yes between that one and the Precision 912 I am in pretty good shape for tube testers.

You and Doug have been buying EBAY out of these lol That one is real clean looks like it was in a dust free room when it was stored away. Putting a fuse in those really makes a lot of sense safety wise.

Some of the Transformers are built with a Safety Fuse hidden under the Insulator Protective Wrap - where your Input is Soldered to the Winding. The External Fuse is easier to replace and hopefully blows before the Linked fuse which some are just Thermal and not actually Short-Circuit Type Fuses. Super Great find nothing shows signs it was ever brought up to full operating Temperature.

Always a good idea to fuse the vintage transformer gear in case the old dear decides to short one day. Well done on that Gregg. These units are surprisingly stable after they warm up for a bit. You can also get them quite accurate by adjusting the coils. There is some interaction when you put the case back on after the alignment though. I wish they had put a removable hatch in the back to allow the adjustment of the coils with the cabinet in place. When using it with the counter though it doesn't really matter. Thanks for the look see. Enjoyed it. ATB Doug.

Needs a minor calibration. When I built mine in 1973, it was right on scale. Change the rest of the paper caps and do a calibration on it. I still have Heathkit equipment. Great stuff. FYI, I wrote this before I finished watching.

That is one clean signal generator. I have to say adding a fuse is a great idea but with the power cord so close to that large air coil you may have a problem with the AC field on that coil. I would have put the fuse on the rear apron. Nice job on the electrolytic Gregg.
@greggsvintageworkshop89744 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bill, I thought twice about that fuse location and I think it will be fine. I checked the modulation today using the Sportmate and it was good across the scale. Sportmate is playing fantastic too!
@old64goat4 жыл бұрын
I am glad the Sportmate is playing great, nice radio.

If you read the manual, you will see that they align/calibrate the unit by having you use an AM radio known broadcast station for the lower frequencies and an FM station for the higher (harmonic) frequencies. If you have a short wave receiver, WWV can be used. The dial is more of a "suggestion" than an accurate scale.

i have two factory built units with the same problem and have asked other ig-102 users if they have any problem with the frequency tuning assembly not staying on frequency when releasing the tuning knob i have cleaned, lubed the vernier and tuning cap bearings with little success. barry

Thanks for the great information in the video. Perfect timing since I have almost finished replacing the paper caps and some out of tolerance resistors. I am going to use two Y2 safety caps on the AC input line where the .02uf ceramics are installed. I did notice a dicrepency on the schematic for these. It shows .01uf. Is either one ok? Also, I might have missed it, but what size fuse did you use?
@Mr71chevyvan4 жыл бұрын
any thought of what lube to use for a sticking tuning dial capacitor. i tried a light lube on the front bearing and all the rotor support assy. its a pain to try and tune an exact frequency as it doesn't want to stay put after releasing the knob.
@greggsvintageworkshop89744 жыл бұрын
Hey there Mr71chevyvan, thanks for watching. Try wicking some WD40 down the shaft and at the other support end. That usually will free it up.
@Mr71chevyvan3 жыл бұрын
both of my ig 102"s exhibit sticking vernier. it wont stay put after releasing tuning knob making exact adj almost impossible. i have lubed down the shaft, then face down to lube from back side.

hi, dumb question here. can this thing output sound or only silent signal
@greggsvintageworkshop89744 жыл бұрын
Hello sir, it is a silent signal that is audible when the radio is tuned to the selected frequency. It has no speaker, so no audible signal by itself. Thanks for the question.

Been a min but, How many volt was the 22uf caps you installed ?
@greggsvintageworkshop8974 Жыл бұрын
Brandon, I really do not remember, but most likely it was a 450 volt cap, because those are what I use for most devices other than transistor radios.
