Just because we are dried in does not mean the work stops. Our to do list is still long with firewood being number one. In order to be warm this winter we needed to finish installing our wood stove, and we have a goal of gathering 10 cords of wood to make sure we have enough to last us all winter long.
We also managed to finish getting all of our metal roofing sheets up. That project did not require three people but it certainly made the job a lot faster. We are still ever thankful to the new friends we have made here.

I would always worry a spark got between the cracks of brick. At our remote cabin that road vehicles can’t get to I poured 1 1/2” of concrete with wire in it. Did that about 20 years ago and it’s holding up great even with some moderate earthquakes. Also a fresh intake is a must.

You are NOT dried in!! The Ridge is wide open, heat lose and water entrance point...Get the roof on so you can put the ridge cap on. Roxul will be the best Insulation around the stove pipe inside at the top. Doesn't burn until 2500 degrees and it will not absorb water. Your stove pipe needs a damper in it just above the stove, or will lose a lot of heat from the pipe

When my husband and I were building our log home by ourselves, we lived 3 winters without any central heating. We had a fireplace, and put an old pot belly stove with the pipe stuck out the window and up! We went 5 years with just plywood floors. ( I painted them a light color to brighten things up a bit). It took us 9 years to “finish” the house. Hang in there! Great job!

My wood stove burns 24 hours a day 7 days a week 8 months of the year. Wood is my soul heat. If I was you guys I would go into the winter with no less than at least 10 chords of wood, good wood. There is nothing more enjoyable than opening your door coming home to a warm house. You're also going to want to get multiple fans And preferably something up top because all your heat is gonna rise to the peak of the a frame.

I would suggest you both spend a week collecting and splitting fire wood. At least 5 cords if not more. Next year you will have a good idea as to how much you will burn over the winter and can adjust for that. I keep one year in advance so i always have dry wood on hand. The first years the hardest to collect. I spent a week collecting and spliting. Next years wood i have collected in rounds and will split next year when i collect again for the next year. I still collect and split the same amount of wood each year now and only spend 3 or 4 days doing it. And trust me i dont work to hard at it any more either lol. Place is taking shape. I feel better now that you are mostly dryed in and can stay warm.

Such wonderful progress this week. Everyone ever in the history of wood burning stoves had to learn how to "work them". And if you ever get a different one, you'll be learning it as well. Using the smaller standing dead spruce is a great way to gather usable Firewood this year, and in a pinch can even be done after the snow falls. (Not most desirable outcome, but an option in a pinch) Throwing up a ship's ladder might be an option for you to feel more comfortable about sleeping in the loft as its sort of a cross between a ladder and stairs. Just truly thrilled for you to see a dried in cabin with heat!

Dont split to small. Larger chunks will burn longer. Once you have a good bed of coals its nice to put in some full rounds in and then pack in smaller split chunks to fill in. Do this especially at night when its colder. Once you have more experience using the stove you will learn how to damper the stove down to control how fast the wood burns. I have been burning wood all my life and its the best heat!. Dry birch bark works really well for starting fires. But if you plan on using the butane torch to start fires its not needed. It would be a good idea to put something fire proof under the stove. Make sure you have fire extinguishers close by! Glad to see you have a stove fan to help circulate the heat. I use 2 on my stove top! Once your insulated things will be a lot easier for you. Another trick to hold heat in the house is to stack cement blocks or anything else that will absorb heat close to the stove. Then when the fire is low or goes out the cement blocks will keep radiating the heat. Could help you this winter until your insulated. I really enjoy watching your progress. Your doing very well.

So happy to see you’re warm and dry with lots of space and not in the camper. Sleeping in the loft might be a lot warmer as heat rises. Love your videos. Shows how hard building your home can be, esp in Alaska. That black metal roof looks awesome and, without your kind helpers, it wouldn’t have been easy to put up. God bless your helpers. Storing the firewood without a proper shed - you could put some long thin logs down the bottom, close together in lattice formation. Pile the firewood on top and cover it with tarp until you build a proper shed. At least it’d be off the ground and be aerated. A temporary solution instead of water logged firewood. Lori, I like your style of nailing the roof, sitting down . Very innovative of not having wet knees and no lower back pain. Thanks for sharing ❤️❤️ Aussie fan.

The wood having a “rough” edge will light easier. May not split all of the wood, but splitting half will help the fire catch easier. Also, the hard wood is good during the night because it will burn longer than softer wood. Might cut several live/green trees now so they can be drying almost a year before burning.

Thinking you need to do some research on your stove installation! You need to have fire retarded surfaces under and around that area! Plus using pine wood for inside burning is NOT a good idea, it builds to much crud inside the chimney, use harder woods like birch, oak, maple etc. Birch bark is a great fire starter. You shouldn't burn wood that's not dried out (green). Split wood burns faster, the thinner it's split the easier it will be to start. Please do yourself a favor and do your research! Hate to see all your hard work go up in flames. Don't rush, do your research, read the manuals that come with equipment, save yourself some headaches and time, do it right the first time. Kudos for trying to do this on your own! Best wishes for both of you! BE SAFE!!!😊

Our wood stove has water pipe that runs through it to steel water holding tank on the side. (Think sauna) so scortching hot water available 24/7. Can use that water to fill a tub or stock tank to bathe in for your one room cabin. Nothing more relaxing than being able to clean up and get the chill out. We also have an outdoor sauna. Very common over here in the U.P of Michigan. But I encourage you to check out something like that. Im sure someone in that area will have the skills to run a water pipe through that wood stove of yours. Its a beautiful stove! Nice to see the fire through glass plus cook!! Tarp for outhouse will be good enough for now. How about a camping porta potty inside that can easily be emptied into outhouse come morning? No gal want to run outside constantly at night lol. Also think ahead for when your sick. Porta potty be nice. And get some wood piled inside, at least a cord. That will help when someone is hurt or you both get the flu. At our place I have a bedframe made (2x4s, OSB) high enough to to store very large rubbermade totes underneath, slide in and out perfect. Plus keeps us higher than A normal bed off floor but better than climbing up a ladder steady to loft, just make a step. Cozy warm and great storage for underneath! 😊 As you know priority will be firewood and fast! No wood is good wet in piles on the ground. Cleanup outside also. Dont be one of those off grid places that are nothing but junk and garbage piled all over. Strive to be better than that.❤ Good idea to stack on deck. Also bring plenty to stack inside, A must! You need a way to keep that wood dry. Buy smoke dectors and a few fire extinguishers. Keep some buckets of water by that wood stove just in case a wall or anything catches on fire. In the meatime for storage inside. Use pulleys to hang stuff inside that A frame. Love your idea for predrilling your holes! It works! Saves on your knees and back. Looks so much warmer and cozier now! Im loving the progress! - the wife Diana😊

A few hints for the wood stove. All of the warm air (draft) that goes up the chimney has to be replaced in the house. Think of it as a big shop vac. Its replaced by pulling in air from ever place it can. That equals cold drafts in the house. Answer? Cold air intake for the stove. Always try to keep the chimney hot. Even on the 40 degree days that will keep condensation from inside the pipe making creosote.

You're home is really going to be very nice. When you cleaned up and organized your belongings it looks great. With the roof cap installed it will be dry and warm this winter. I enjoy watching you both work on your home. I always look forward to seeing a new video. Peace Love Happiness 💕

Wood heat is the best! When you don't need as much heat, burn the punky wood and the most solid wood when it's really cold. Make sure and keep an eye on the creosote build up in the stove pipe. Chimney fires are no joke.

Don't use pine to burn. Use other hardwoods maple oak etc. I think you have a lot with various kinds of wood. Can use burn pine outside tho.

No real hardwoods in Alaska...mostly dead black spruce , killed by bark beetle, or birch. Or cottonwood, not a good option.

As one that only burns wood here in north western Ont. Weeks of 40 below you are going to go after all the A Birch that been hanging you up when cutting your saw logs. It burns very hot an will last the night. It burn slow it burns green unlike spruce it burns hot but fast plus the sap in it really plugs up your pipe an pipe cap

A couple of things to make life a bit easier. See how long a piece of wood your stove will take. Mark your bar on the chainsaw or remember which letter that length corresponds to. Now you won't be cutting more than you need to and the firebox will be full as you stack wood in. The fuller the box the longer it lasts and the less times you need to get up at night to feed it. Rounds burn longer than split wood once the fire is going but if you need a hotter fire then burn splits. You will have to feed it more. Get a sheet of 3/4 or 1" Styrofoam and cut out a toilet seat shape with it. It is never cold when you sit on it in the coldest weather. When it gets dirty make another. I have always used Styrofoam but it works with blueboard or pink as well, just a bit more expensive. Definitely put the stove on a fireproof surface with a couple of feet additional around to protect against sparks when you open the door. Precast concrete squares at a big box store are the cheapest way to achieve that. You also need a fireproof surface on the surrounding walls within two or three feet built with an airflow behind that surface to keep the studs cool. A small gap at the bottom and a bit larger gap at the top. Read up on approved installations. A hot fire on a cold day can start a fire in a wall behind normal sheetrock. Add a slip joint to your stack so you can take a section out and move the stove without having to rebuild the stack. You will use it also when the stack metal burns out and needs replacing. You can also make a form and use sacrete to pour your own. If you want to get fancy you can tile it. Keep a good supply of kindling for the times you need a fire quickly. Build a big, bigger wood shed and fill it.

Clearance to combustibles for a single wall pipe are 36in. I think your a bit to close near the peak. You can get around this by putting a heat shield around the pipe. Then its 10in.

Hate doing double comments, but....Cut the dead trees, the ones that are solid, standing or down. Live trees are not dry or seasoned and will make a lot of Creosote in your chimney and can cause chimney fires. Hardwood is what you will need to stay warm, Spruce and other Softwoods burn way to fast and provide little heat

I am so happy for you. Nothing like a wood stove on a cold night to keep you warm. One thing to remember about the chimney is when you start your fire from a cold start the draft will be pushing down. As the chimney warms up the draft will work better. We light our stove with a torch also as that helps to get the draft going. Which side is the kitchen going? I am a little confused because of the placement of the stove.

Birch Bark seems to be an excellant fire starter. The Stove will smoke burning off the paint.

Just a fyi: wood ash makes excellent fertilizer. Find a place or create a compost area and save the ash for your garden next year.

If you guys got enough pine trees and spruce trees on your property start collecting pine cones and you can dip them in wax and they make some of the best fire starters you'll ever need.. and when you cut down the dry trees that you milled for your build..use the cut offs for firewood to.. we call it slab wood here we use it... and we just throw a little creosote stick in to burn off the crud in chimney 1 or 2 times a month

Please put a fireproof base/ material under your stove and around your chimney next to your roof. I would hate seeing this house go up in flames.

Jesus, you don’t put the small flame on top of the wood…lol. Put it under, make a small fire & grow it.

All log burners will smoke on first light, it’s just the paint and oil burning off the surface should stop after a bit. A non combustible and heat resistant sheet should go under the burner, like cement board or a large flat stone or the wood floor will char

see if the stove have a inlet for the air, maybe under or the backside. Best way is to get the air from the outside throw a pipe. You do not want to use the warm air from the inside the house go out to the chimney, better to take cold air from outside. The air you take from the inside make a underpressure and more cold air coming in from your ventilation and that is not nice to have so much extra cold airflow in the house and its not effective, you must use more wood. All air how goes out from the chimney must come in somewhere.

I’m pretty sure you need to put down some fireproof surface on the floor and walls near the stove. Please be careful.
