I live in Sydney Australia. But i learned this song back in Sri Lanka in 1965 when i became a Christian at a 'Vacation Bible School' at a Methodist Church in Sri Lanka. I would have been 10 at the time. I wouldnt have fully understood the meaning and depth of the words at the time. But i was certainly spiritually moved and the words have been written in my heart. Everytime i sing or hear it reminds me of God's grace and i am moved of those early years. Having been brought up catholic i moved to Australia in 1974 and truely experienced His Grace and started attending a Baptist church. It was then that i fully learned to appreciate the words. But in my heart i know God's hand was on me in those early years. Praise God! He is Good!

Back in the 1970s, in Toronto, Canada, I heard John W. Peterson describe the origins of this hymn. He had attended a Christian conference and a gentleman had given his testimony. He described his salvation as, "It was if heaven had come down, and glory had filled my soul." Peterson immediately drew, from his shirt pocket, the notebook that he always carried, if he heard or created a possible hymn lyric. Within a short time, he expanded that one phrase into the entire hymn.
