This is a *survival* knife. You don't know where you're going to be when you need it, so it has to do everything. It's a nigh on indestructible, jack of all trades. Heavy enough to chop and split, small enough (just) to shave and and do finer work, strong enough to use as a pry bar. Even if you *totally* lose the edge on it, you can always use it to *batter* something to death. It's a beast. Commonly referred to as "The Pig". It arrives without an edge, so you can do it yourself. The thinking is: if you can learn to put an edge on *this* , you can put an edge on *anything* . Take the finger guard off, and put new scales on ('cos those rivets are a pain in the arse). Get rid of that gap in between the scales (it's there to stop your hand freezing to the metal in Arctic conditions, but unnecessary in the temperate zones). It's a quarter of an inch thick steel, that I have *literally* used to pry open a wooden framed door, before now. I often take this on short trips, in place of my hatchet and a knife. I just keep a SAK or a Leatherman for fine work and food prep. A lot of people overlook this knife in favour of a "brand", or they want a shiny-shiny thing, a display piece, to show off to the other "gear guys". Well, OK. If that's what you're into, but I paid £30 for mine, not £300. That was10 years ago, and I've had *constant* heavy duty use out of it. And no more hassle from her than the occasional dink in the edge. A quick flash over with a Lansky Puck, and she's happy again. She ain't pretty. She's The Pig. She ain't light, nor fancy. But she *is* cheap, and *100% reliable* . Ladies and Gentlemen, the British Army M.O.D. Survival knife.

@@Barrrt To the best of my memory (which isn't saying much), I bought her from an outdoors shop somewhere in Wales (Penryth, maybe). I believe they closed down some years later (it wasn't my fault, honest). I bought a few things from them at very reasonable prices, and I always tried to reward their pricing model with my repeat custom, but I guess GoOutdoors and the like, plus the internet, make things tough for small businesses.

The problem is that it does'nt chop well, it does'nt do fine work, and its poor as a pry bar. Too heavy, too thick, poor grind for field work, atrocious sheath, badly made and designed guard. But worse, lives have been put at risk in the past because of a) its faults b) many were just ditched. Look at the choices made by Brit special forces and procurement in Scandinavia and Europe.

I've had one of these knives for over 10 years, it was roughly finished with a dull blade, but with a bit of re-finishing, a slight change of blade profile the knife was transformed into a superbly capable all round knife and damn near UNBREAKABLE, I also threw away the hideous sheath and made a leather one.

The handle scales are oversized to prevent the possibly bare skin of the user's hand from freezing onto the tang in below-freezing environments. It's not razor-sharp because it is issued to aircrews with a "utility" edge, suitable for cutting through an aircraft fuselage. Razor-sharp is great for a small detail-oriented blade, but it gets dull much faster when subjected to heavy use. In short, it is literally a "survival-knife", _not_ a camping knife...
@thevelointhevale1132
@thevelointhevale1132 4 жыл бұрын
The guard is there to protect your hand should it accidentally slip forward towards the blade whilst performing heavy tasks. In a Survival situation the last thing you need is a deep cut or wound ... so while I appreciate you have made modifications to suit your personal use - you have also removed a safety feature of the knife given the purpose it is intended for. Not a change I would make on my own example. The guard is also there to protect your hand from anything sliding down the blade towards you ... another design safety feature that is incredibly useful in a Survival knife. You should be able to feather wood with the guard in situ without any trouble at all ... this is all about 'user error' not design fault. The wood grips of these knives come dry and without any treatment of any kind. The reason for gaps is due to the wood being bone dry - if you applied a reasonable amount of Linseed Oil the wood would soak it up and swell, filling most minor spaces. A wax treatment finish over the Linseed Oil rub takes care of any ingress of moisture. These knives were designed to be issued rough for Soldiers to finish ... to put their own edge on, finish handle and grips to suit etc - there is a very good reason the scales are not flush with the tang ... cold weather handling!

the reason for the sheath being designed the way it was is due to it being meant to be worn on your left side as you would normally have your pistol holstered on your right side

Unfortunately, that still leaves the edge the wrong side up when drawn. It only makes sense for left-handed people because they'd draw the knife and use it with their left hand.

I have many knives and they are all good for different tasks, this knife is the best chopper I have come across (apart from maybe a heavy kukri). I would highly recommend it as I used to carry an axe and/or a saw when I go camping but now I just take this knife which saves space and weight. I am at the moment carving some hickory handle scales that I cut myself as I don't like the black g10 scales that came with it, I'm going to replace the rivets with sex bolts/Chicago screws to make disassembly easier. I intend to take off the black dip coat and put on a patina finish as it's fading after only a few uses. The back part of the finger guard needs reshaped as it gets in the way and it needs reinforced with a welder as it looks relatively weak.

Say Heah Simon, Happy New Year, By the way, I used my Polish Military Compass today. I read somewhere that the edge(original) was hollow ground,but from what i see it looks like a scandi with a secondary bevel?, for a first project, couldn't i just try to use the original angle and make a true scandi-grind? - Nice review,as always,and really nice mod.
@SimonsDiscoveries
@SimonsDiscoveries 9 жыл бұрын
+PerferObdura It definitely wasn't a hollow grind. It wasn't really finished so it's hard to say what it was supposed to be but I suspect they were aiming for a sabre grind there. The original grind is a bit too high to make it a usable scandi. The edge would be too fragile with such angle unles you convexed it. It works fine as a sabre grind - that high scandi with a secondary bevel. Thank you and thanks for watching.

The knife was originally issued to aircrews and was designed to be able to cut through the skin of an aircraft. That's why it's not hollow-ground and has a utility edge rather than a razor-sharp one. It's a hatchet/machete/survival-tool. Was never meant to be a camping knife.

Hi. So unless they changed something about the handle in the past few years, the original size will most likely be too much for comfort. I had to sand it down a lot (the scales protruded beyond the tang and pins quite a bit) and it is still rather large. That said, there's a lot of extra material you can remove and downsize the handle significantly, even more than I did, if you're willing to invest some time and effort.

Hi Simon. Great job. Great minds clearly think alike! Even before had seen your KZbin film I had made my own similar adaptations to the MOD survival knife. Truth be told I think every purchased item is improved by adapting it to your personal requirements. It makes it 'your' knife for 'your' needs (or whatever the item might be). For this knife I carried out some similar improvements. I sanded down the handle (a simple job). I applied olive oil to the wood. I let it dry and then applied a layer of varnish. I (as you did) cut and sanded the top of the cross-guard. I then, with apoxy resin glued part of a bicycle inner-tube to the handle. This does not make it look very pretty, but it makes it very much for comfortable to use. The blade? I had no problem with the coating. As you rightly say, the edge needs some work. The best thing is to use an appropriately sized metal file. With a little bit of time and effort you can produced a fantastic edge. As for the sheath - that too is a work of love and a separate story. In my view it does not detract from the basic product at all that you have to adapt it for your needs. The trick is to have the knowledge, skill, time and (if it is not too strong a word) love. I note that Survivalkraft was not happy. He is quite entitled to his opinion. However, perhaps he expected instant gratification. The best things come to those who wait.....and adapt. The Becker is a fine knife. I am sure that there are many Girl Scouts who will appreciate it (smile!) Thanks for the vid.

Yes Simon, they accumulated since I don't sell them off. I like using them. Infact my most recent is my Ergo series of Busse Combat, All my Busse's were none coated, We'll except my Green American Flag Cerakote ASH-1 Magnum, which doesn't count. But then they came out with the Steel Heart Ergo, I know once they sell out that's it, They may or may not make that style again, so I took a gamble since it would stick out in my collection. The gamble payed off because the made the Badger Attack Ergo, So I bought it now I thought well atleast it's a nice set that matched. So I thought that was it, But then they came out with the Ergo Battle Mistress. In my sincere opinion, I think everybody should own atleast one Battle Mistress, Watch the destruction video in KZbin and you will understand why I say this, I have two, My E. B. M. and my Anneversay Straight Handle Battle Mistress LE. So rather just having a nice set of two, I have a nice matching set of three. Chris Tanner from Preparemind101designed a Ergo type knife called the Jessica X, But his Handle is too large for the way I would use my knife or would probably get in my way when I'm moving fast through the bush or even scouting, But it does have nice merits as far as slicing and chopping, So when the Steel Heart Ergo came out it wasn't hard for me to want it. Well that's my story why I bought my recent Busse Combat.

Yes this knife is awesome! I dot the wood version sanded down the handles and the blade to a near mirror finish. I found mine on amazon, I’m too sure of the genuineness of it but everything looks right like the real deal- same sheath same stamp between 2nd and third rivet (127 8214 JA 1993 /|\. Better be the real deal lol it cost 128$ CAD plus 64 shipping.

Hi Simon, Great vid. about an outstanding bit of kit. If you 'personalise' this blade you have a tool not only for you, but for you to pass down. Only one thing I would say. Have a look at kzbin.info/www/bejne/eojFon18oLyFl7s Mack Tightwad is quite right when he says that in the UK army, by and large, the MOD utility blade was to be found in the tool box rather than on the waist. Hence the sheath being so poxy. It didn't matter because it was never really carried. I know that some carried the knife on their webbing (perhaps Mr. Thomson below) and you can buy sheaths for just this purpose. However, generally speaking Mack was/is right. This does not detract from the knife in any way. It simply explains why the Toms referred to it as 'The Beast.' As to a 'carry' knife in the wilderness that is another matter. I am ashamed to say that I am rather like one of those women you take to buy a dress. You find one that's perfect first time but they insist on trying every damn one in the town...... and then come back to the first one they looked at. Well, that's me with the 'carry knife.' I am not a collector but a user. I have come across a multitude of blades to use on the farm. If it does not make the grade (irrespective of the price and 'Gucci' brand), out the door it goes. I have no time for clutter. Cut to the chase. Best knife our of all the ones that have passed through my hands? Answer: The very first one I ever had. Though where it came from I will never know. It is a bone-handled scout/sheath knife that I have had since about 1976. Carbon steel, five inch blade. Wooden sheath (made by my Taid (grandfather)).It was 'good enough' for Baden Powell because it was 'good enough,' he found, for the native 'scouts' in the Boer War. Hence it's adoption for the (universal) Scout movement. This reflects on times past. Now Scouts in the UK cannot even carry a pen knife. Indeed, it would not surprise in the least bit if you can now get a 'gender orienteering' badge to sew on your sleeve. Ho hum, The modern Mora is not a million miles away from this design. Perhaps a near comparison is the classic K-Bar only with a shorter blade. There are certainly quite a few 'Scout knives' of the type I am referring to on the US Ebay, though often with leather washers rather than a bone handle. You have to go for bone by way of preference. No problem with water and an outstanding grip. One things for sure: Got to be carbon steel and go for natural materials every time. Thanks again for the film Simon.

+Simon's Discoveries You write: "I was wondering how useful it actually was in the field."Like most things in life, it's a trade off against your actual needs and conditions.Let's put it this way. If you are wandering in and out of the 'wilderness' like me (as it were), then a Scout/Sheath knife works very well. it is light and versatile and does most jobs that I need well.However, if I were in the outback (Northern Hemisphere) for a longer period of time then the Scout knife would not be enough. I would need more heavy duty tool and it would justify carrying the extra weight.What would I take with me? (1). The modified MOD + (2). Well I used to state a Mora. However, given the weight of the MOD I think you need to counterbalance that with something lighter. There are many excellent knives out there which might 'tick the box.' Almost any Victorinox or Wenger would do for example. However, I personally, would be torn between a Mercator Black Cat or a Douk-Douk. Both carbon steel and pretty 'bomb-proof.' The former used by German soldiers since before WWI, the latter famously used in the French Foreign Legion. Not bad recommendations. I would definitely NOT take an Opinel.

“The sheath was backward.” No, actually it wasn’t/isn’t. You’re just using your wrong hand! Use your left hand like God intended for you to do. Lol Welcome to what we left handers deal with every day. 😊 We finally get something manufactured correctly and here you are calling it “backward”.😖 By the way, it’s not made to slice paper or do surgery with. It’s made to be indestructible. Listened to another KZbinr who is ex British military who told how he and his mates used their “beasts” to disassemble a brick wall of a house to gain entry to check for booby traps. I love mine just like it is. Yes, it needs to be sharpened. But to my way of thinking the type grind to put on it is the same as you would put on an axe, hatchet or machete. If I want to do feather sticks or cut my steak, I use my Mora. You did transform it into a much more eye appealing knife.👍

But I also had my Rodent 6 modified, I had the blade thinned down from .265" to just a tich less than a 1/4". I also had the top guard taken off. I'm sure you heard of the Ratmandu. Well my Modde Rodent 6 L@@Ks like a Ratmandu on steroids. I like teaming it with a newer version of the Mora 510. I do have a Garberg too, But I teamed it with my Bokor Aparro. Nice to Say Heah. +Simon's Discoveries - I am commenting on your video in which you criticise the reproduction MOD knife you have in your possession. And while I agree it is not quite as good as the real MOD knife with a namestamped blade, it is obviously still much too good for you. As I mentioned earlier you'd be much better off with a Chinese machette. Leave the real knives to people who can appreciate such things, know what they are talking about and know what they are doing.

No nieee, W trasę to absolutnie. :)

@@kijinseija727 It was designed for the British SAS (Special Air Service), specifically to chop through anything up to the skin of an airplane. It's a nearly indestructible compromise between a knife and a hatchet...(The Fairbairn-Sykes style knives were only used for hand-to-hand combat and fine work, since they actually snap fairly easily) It is issued with a "utility" edge, suitable for cutting through an aircraft fuselage. Razor-sharp is great for a small detail-oriented blade, but it gets dull much faster when subjected to heavy use. In short, it is literally a "survival-knife"

This is the perfect example of how the good idea was poorly executed, if the makers had spent a liitle more time and effort they could have made a very good knife, again it's the case of They are only soldiers they don't need good equipment (MOD) the re moded version (like yours) are a very good tool, it's always the case with british army gear, made cheaply.
