Thank you so much. I am using this knot to tie the ends of acolyte cinctures. The liturgical supply houses charge $26 /cincture and I can buy the cotton rope for 53cents a foot and tie my own knots. You saved us a lot of money!

Thanks for sharing ! I think the second way is more secure. I always learn something from your videos !
@dankolar60667 жыл бұрын
I have used the second variant, not as a terminal knot, but as a middle line knot. When tied in 1/2-inch hemp, with 8-12 turns, this knot forms a substantial box or chest handle. All that's needed is to pass the tails thru holes bored in the box sidewall, then half-hitching the tails. While not as spiffy as a fully blown chest becket, it does help one move the boot box.
@KnottingKnots7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I can see how that variation would make a good easy to hold chest handle. Not everything in this world has to be pretty, useful is sometimes a better option!!!

Though perhaps not "pretty", carefully tied in appropriate material, what Dan Kolar describes could certainly be handsome.

I liked this video because you went through it twice. My problem is finding this knot with a hidden end. That is the kind of knot we have on the ends of our altar server cinctures. The cinctures always come with perfect knots. Of course, this seems to have become a challenge to some of our servers to untie it. It is left to me to retie; however, it never looks as tight. I know it is because I am trying to tuck in the end. Is there a trick to this--to make it tight with the end tucked in? Thank you.

@@JarnoSuni1 Ah yes, that is some really hard lay rope, and I struggle to get it to bend and form a knot. Trying to pull it up nice and tight was a bit of a nightmare. Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.

Might I suggest that you spend time on a larger vessel then? I remember when I was in the Navy, the longer I was in the sicker I got! Are you a practical, decorative knotter or forced into tying a knot when you have to?
@UguysRnuts7 жыл бұрын
I use this knot on a regular basis, but never for heaving. In fact for heaving a line, this knot is of little to no value. Where it is useful, however, is as a stopper knot on a halyard, sheet or tackle when a easily gripped 'handle' or 'button' would make pulling the rope easier. Tied with two or three turns max, it forms an ergonomic ball that allows one to easily grab and haul a short tail. In addition, an unruly or unsightly dangling tail can be eliminated by coiling extra line up into this knot. Much preferable to a 'figure of eight'.

Always love it when you leave a comment, good useful information. When are you going to put up a recognisable Logo? ;-)

My U will have to do. My interests are too diverse to allow for a single 'U'niversal symbol. BTW can you explain the significance of your 'circle bar' arrangement? It reminds me of the pictograph for 'keep out'. Maybe not the most inviting icon if you're trying to attract an audience.

It helps me to find my stuff easier. Also when a sign says "Don't Push the Button" you know what happens next. Maybe I should have a Welsh dragon seeing as I was on a Welsh ship??

Your vids are really outstanding, because the knots you choose are always interesting, you teach very well, and you record in a way that makes tying easy to follow and grasp. So thanks a lot! Concerning this knot in particular, there is another version which is very interesting. We use it in tree pruning to throw our rope over a branch (the added weight at the end helps with the throwing). The added benefit compared to your version, is that if the end gets stuck, pulling it hard unties the knot and you can recover your rope. Watch this over version on the "educated climber" channel, it's called the noose. On this same channel, you may check the amazing "daisy chain hitch", which advantageously replaced the running bowline for me, when rigging very heavy branches.

very usefull much quicker to tie and untie than a monkeys fist you could also tie it round lets say 2 inch piece of concrete reinforcing bar to give extra weight for heaving.
