As a German I read a fair amount of Goethe but what got really to me in terms of the human being Goethe, was what I learned about him and the story of his life when I first went to Weimar. The whole city lives and breathes Goethe (and Schiller) and I began to read more about him.

Interesting thoughts in the ideology of the French Revolution. Surprisingly, I am quite under read on the Revolution. I have never taken a course on it. I’ve read quite a lot of Enlightenment writers (Voltaire, Diderot, Rousseau) but no Revolutionary literature.

The enlightenment writers you mention are central. A history will just show how ideas can be turned into ideology, which is never good.

Of this lot I really fancy the Goethe, about whom I know almost nothing which I am aware is a hideous gap. On the Gray: I’m currently coming to the conclusion that human progress is a reality, which is not somewhere I ever intended to come out. And thanks for the shout out - completely unexpected.

French revolution in the hairstyle department. Looks spectacular! And is it not so much easier? Now you have an extra hour and forty-five minutes to read instead of washing, drying and styling your hair. And... and... and you look like a bearded 17 year old!

I'm interested in your vs John Gray's views you mentioned. I have been curious about that topic for a while so wondered if you had any book recommendations (fiction or non-fiction) about it. I have some ideas about but feel my views need more research and are still not fully developed, so any help or suggestions would be super appreciated.

I'm going to do a video on this soon. The difficulty is - it's easy to be a materialist and make your case than a dualist, and being a dualist if very old-fashioned beyond the faith communities. And even they tend to argue against a purely materialist vision of the world without make thing case for a non-material element.
