Being abandoned by a parent is a VERY touchy topic for me (my dad moved in with his now wife and helped raise her kids while he was still with my mom when i was about 11 and became an inconsistent parent- don't even get me started on his favoritisim that he never tried to hide). Hearing charlie say "I'm sorry for leaving you" near the end made me think about how I'd give anything to hear those words from my dad. I teared up throughout the movie but that line alone was the reason i had the hardest ugly cry i had in years when it was over

I don’t see anyone talking about this in the comments, but Sadie Sink’s acting in this movie was top notch even though she is not as recognized as an actor as Brendan Frazier is she still, IMO, deserves an award for this movie. I also love her in stranger things as Max incredible acting especially in the episode Dear Billy. Her acting in Fear Street 2 is also incredible I can feel her emotion being bullied and being betrayed by Nick Goode as well as Cindy’s death.

If she keeps up with it she'll get some great awards. Just hopefully she gets great movies because they never really know till it comes out and sadly i seen a lot of great young actresses get bad roles and fade out. Its like Hollywood can make so many movies for girls but not young adult roles.

I really hope movies like this will help persuade people to support live theater more. There are so many brilliant plays with such important stories that get underminded purely because of their format. This movie is based on a really good play and the stage version is just as impactful. Plus, the script is an amazing read. This is just proof that movies based on plays can be just as good as movie musicals.

@34:05 yeah it was a very poetic way to say/show he died after making peace with his daughter, they reconnected again and it was all he ever wanted. "I just want to make sure i've done 1 thing right with my life!!" and that happens in the end. I see a lot of people with doubts about the end, what happened...he died man c'mon...

What an incredible performance by Brendan Fraser, goes to show a good script in the hands of a actor known for comedy and action adventure films can show just how talented and capable they are. And can I also add, I've never wanted to beat a teenager's ass as badly as Sadie Sink in this film, her character is truly evil, and the character of Charlie is the polar opposite. But it's a testament to all the amazing actors in this movie. Everyone played their respective roles to perfection. What a movie.

I don’t think the daughter was trying to hurt Thomas. His parents already knew he smoked pot and stole the money. He didn’t say anything they didn’t already know except why he did it. Maybe it wouldn’t have had a happy ending but he would at least know where his parents stand.

I think she probably thought more along the lines of: "This kid is lying to my father. I don't like my father but this is messed up." I think she thought he was gonna get arrested. Which is fair enough, he's lying to get into her dad's house and admitted to stealing over 2 grand. She was like "Interesting, I'm sure the cops will think so too". It's the consequences of his own actions and of course Ellie wanted to see to it that his lie was exposed. Thomas was just lucky it was a happy ending

Fun fact, I'm only 38 & am about half the size Charlie is in the movie, but due to my financial & living situation (stress) & untreated symptoms (not BP related) have caused my BP to be even higher that when Charlie had his checked. My only Dr office kept telling me it's a hypertension emergency & I should be at the ER. Fun thing is my small-town ER has written me off since my dozen chronic & terminal illnesses have had me at the ER dozens of times in my life... Also, his daughter is a c u next tuesday, huh??

120/80 is considered to be standard blood pressure though some people have slightly higher or lower numbers at baseline. The top number is systolic blood pressure which is the pressure in your arteries while your heart is beating. The bottom number is diastolic blood pressure which is the pressure in your arteries in between heart beats.

I am of the opinion that in that last few seconds where there's the 'bright light' (heaven) and he 'levitates' isn't supposed to be him 'literally' getting raptured up, so to speak, but a metaphor that him mending ties with his estranged daughter is his idea of 'heaven'. It's all he ever wanted for the last 8 years. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure Aronofsky is an atheist so I don't see him sending the main character literally to heaven. Fantastic movie!

I am 32, from Rome, working for a government I can't name. My job is "extraction of informations from people" in the basement of an embassy. I take 4 boxes (120g) of ambien (we call it stilnox over here) and 4 boxes of xanax (80g) a day. My parents died in a car crash when I was 8, I have no girlfriend, no friends. This is my honest. That's what is, in all honesty, what is left of me.

Ellie is so harsh and mean but so many people hate her so quickly because we sympathize with our sad main character. I know that you guys understand why she's mad. I just seen a lot of people don't think about what it does to a 8 yr old that the parent they loved the most leaves chooses someone else and lives with them. The greatest love in their life becomes their biggest enemy and with years of growing up with that. Everytime she says something foul i put the disgust towards charlie because he caused her to be this way. Charlie still put the providers effort. But if he's going to pay for child's support he should of got court order to have her some parts of the week. Though most likely it was a messy break-up and he was caught up in his new love. He dropped the ball in doing the right thing. Everyone makes mistakes but just because he's self sabotaging himself he doesn't get sympathy for how he didn't raise his daughter.
@KellyKels23

Everyone in this movie annoyed me except Liz. Don’t get me wrong, every actor did great, Sadie really made me dislike her character & Brendan was phenomenal but it was extremely hard for me to see past all his flaws, the mistakes he made and suddenly trying to make a difference in the final week of his life for a daughter who clearly needs more than a weeks worth of his attention to sort through her anger & now possibly a whole new level of trauma and anger unlocked by his brief return and choosing to die, leaving her all over again for his partner…but maybe I missed the point or deeper meaning, maybe the fact that we don’t always get to set things right before we go is part of it? idk. I was definitely frustrated though.

IMO the daughter has no right to be a c-bag to everyone just because her dad left. One of the only clear memories I have from my childhood is of clinging to my dad's leg at age 7 while he had his bags thrown out by my mother & he left us for another family, and to this day is allowing those step-kids who are now in their mid-30s, to live for FREE in their house (& have their whole lives, while I have been forced to live on my own for 15yrs) while ignoring my texts letting him know that after doing 1000% I can do on my own, I lost my power/heat in the bitter cold for over a week. I have a million reasons to be bitter at the world & my parents, and I might be, but I still treat EVERY living person & animal with the compassion & empathy I hope to be given! 🤷‍♀️

I imagine that from the author's perspective, he wrote the daughter to be extremely cruel to Charlie because she is the biggest example of him doing a shameful thing and his self-hatred that followed. I mean, just by not seeing her for eight years, he knows he failed her. And then he sees her, and she's constantly calling him a disgusting failure which he already feels he is.

Im glad you guys could enjoy it but generaly I wasnt impressed. The most unrealistic thing to me is the webcam. Anyone who is paranoid about being seen will have it taped over or something. It is an insult to the character's intelligence and sense that he wouldn't have done that. The "reveal" was not necessary. Honestly a lot of it didnt feel necessary. Such focus on the weight rather than real effects, the characters, and such. Maybe Im just too aware of tropes regarding disability and mental health representation and homosexuality but yeah.
