I decided to build my own stompbox from some random stuff I had lying around the house. It was pretty easy and only cost me about $6 for the small sheet of steel I had to buy from the local home improvement store. Thanks to Scott Lindsey of the 1969's for the idea, although I believe he said he actually saw it on someone else's youtube channel, so the idea seems to have been shared around quite a bit. Anyway, thanks for watching and let me know what you think. I created this video with the KZbin Video Editor ( / editor )

The magnetic pickup idea is good and I like the fact the top end of the sound remains. I still feel the piezo pickup concept works best though.

I wonder if you could chuck it through an EQ pedal though to shape the sound. The signal output would be perfect of that.

In the end I bought a stomp box. The Wazinator Baby Grand. It produces a sound better than anything I or others could actually make too. Its worth the money. SImple as that. Through a nice amp it has got the more beautiful and realistic kick sound.

Question: so I assume that solid timber construction gives more depth to the sound than a thinner box ?? I want a deeper bass-drum sort of sound.

Hey, building a similar project using a one single coil bass pickup and vintage license plate. I'm getting lots of extra noise, I'm assuming from a bad ground. Any suggestions on ways to better ground? I know that typically, on a guitar, you would ground to the bridge, but given there is no bridge on a stomp box, I've tried the license plate itself and a screw on the bottom, neither have done any good

+Isidro Robinson, +peter hyde, sorry I just saw this comment. pickups are typically grounded by soldering directly to the back of the housing on one of the pots. hope this helps

Late to the coversation, but anything you want grounded needs to connect to ground on ypur jack (sleeve of the jack), just look at the wiring for an electric guitar and adapt thensame concept. All grounded points are connected to each other and then to the ground lug on your jack.

also does it need a power supply?
@HeavyBassRig
@HeavyBassRig 10 жыл бұрын
as long as you use passive pickups, it should get the small amount of voltage it needs directly from the amp via the 1/4" guitar cable.

Scruffman Travels TM. Thanks! I built it to use for gigs. My band mate and I actually had a little acoustic side project going for awhile. He's the drummer and I'm the bass player in the band, but we both play guitar also.

Thanks! You should be able to find lots of good diagrams and instructions on the internet (way better than I can give you, LOL!), just google images for "wiring diagram" and whatever type of pickups you are using. Also remember, you will need something steel (that a magnet will stick to) on top for the magnetic poles in the pickups to work on; newer license plates are made from aluminum and won't work, that's why people use vintage ones (not just because they look cool). Good luck with your project.

Yeah I've checked the diagrams but I don't know how to read them. I'm using a licence plate for the top. It's the same setup as Scott. Thus is the first electrical thing I've put together. Thanks
