Great video! 👍 Never had a client complain about music sounding the same - for me it was exactly the opposite. Non-musicians constantly send me temp tracks for reference. By the way, Alex's approach that we write music for "the people" and not for fellow composer nerds is the real proof that this man let go of his musical ego a long time ago. Keep up the good work. I enjoy your reviews, Markus

I completely agree with the loops thing. If you don't like them don't use them BUT I think the argument there is deeper than that. If you make a track just by pressing a key or two using a loop from a sample library and you call it "your track" then nothing stops me from doing the same and then we both have a track that is pretty much similar (multiply by thousands of said library owners) and this can get into complicated copyright stuff. If you use loops, use them creatively. Use them as an underlying thing in your composition, a rythmic or melodic flavour, not the core of the composition. Thanks for the great review, Alex!
@AlexPfeffer3 жыл бұрын
The thing is, people who press a few keys, call it a track and then want to get into the business, won't get far anyway. 😅
@BWM5163 жыл бұрын
yea if you use loops like you said, amongst a full composition or something then it can be very useful to have actually. personally i dont use much orchetral loops anyway, such as percussion, strings, winds, brass etc, if i do tho it will be percussion. if i use loops/samples its usually vocals actually, or phrases. phrases for vocals or ethnic instruments are super super useful. and for orchestral instruments im sure.
@AchannelA3 жыл бұрын
I generally use loops for "inspiration", just to spark an idea. You never have to look at them as becoming part of your final composition. You can play something similar to a loop or two and stray away from it completely. I use them as placeholders. I do the same with all types of loops from drums, to guitars, and other instruments I don't know how to play, but can later emulate after learning the articulations. As long as you don't use the loops themselves or play the exact same thing, I don't see a problem.

Thank you for the video, Alex. One thing that might be worth mentioning regarding loops is that they can lead to licensing trouble. While it is perfectly legal to use them, of course, algorithms sometimes have trouble discerning their use from legit copyright infringements. You might find yourself unable to publish songs utilizing them on YT, for example. There is a way to sort this out with YT when that happens, but it might not be the hassle you were looking for. Not an argument against them, for like others I find them a great inspirational starting point (even though I do not have any time pressure since I am not a professional composer), but it is a potential issue one may want to be aware of, even if it does not happen a lot.
@AlexPfeffer3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Andreas but there is a very important point to be aware of. I am using loops for ages and if you run into a copyrighjt clain or anything because of loops it is the user's fault of failing to hide them properly. Since the dawn of ages almost EVERY sample lib developer mentions that loops shouldn't be exposed in a track :)

@@AlexPfeffer That is great news and very helpful information! Thank you.

@@AlexPfeffer so does that mean if I have a loop that let’s say starts a “spooky” track, I would eventually need to layer things and build upon that so it’s not recognized as a loop and become a copyright issue?
@AlexPfeffer2 жыл бұрын
@@metallpt147 It doesn't matter which style. If you use a loop or a synth atmo drone or whatever patch, you need to layer it at least with another sound. Put another loop on top or a simple single note from a synth or a pad sound. It is never a good idea to play back a sound "as is".

'Ello Alex. I subscribed to you since 1) I use Studio One myself and 2) I'm orientating myself on samplelibraries, thus I follow composers. Not sure what will come of the latter, but I've got a feeling, I'll stay with Studio One, since I've been using it since v 2 :) I've always been intrigued by Heavyocity since they made Evolve Mutations, but never got around to them much, since I just Komplete, not Ultimate. Might upgrade to Ultimate 14 though. And who knows? Maybe NI will include Damage 2 in it or something. On sait jamais.

I find myself a little torn between great sounds - if a little generic - and the end price. The intro price seems like a pretty fair end price. I do think the loops have something interesting going on though.

Also funny that you call them no-brainers. I'm just an amateur producer, so I find all Heavyocity products intriguing. Look, if I was a professional composer, I'd agree with you, but you can see why they are more a wish-I-had-it for me :)
@AlexPfeffer3 жыл бұрын
Hey Steven, yes I hear ya. Some people got budget right now, some don’t. Some people looking for new stuff, others not. Some are pros, others prefer to do music. In the end, no matter if it is wishlist for now or someone considers buying. It wouldn't make a difference. They are still no brainers, meaning products you can savely buy.

Tip: Damage 2 Owners Get $150 off
@matrixate3 жыл бұрын
This definitely saves time instead of making patches like these from scratch, which I do and have much more control of movement, but...I don't know about that $400+ price. It's on sale now but, $300...kinda steep for something that only adds support to an orchestra. I'd rather spend $500 on a professional sample library from VSL or something similar because sounds like these are actually really easy and fun to make. Good demo though...maybe next time, compose something.
@AlexPfeffer3 жыл бұрын
To be honest, 300 bucks should be back in quickly after having written a few tracks ... and it is way more than just support to an orchestra.
