Toby Ryan does Vocalise sync to the bpm of a project or are they independent?
@TobyRyan
@TobyRyan 6 жыл бұрын
The rhythmic based sounds are tempo synced to the project bpm when kontakt is ran as a plug-in VST/AU in your DAW. The phrases however don’t use time-stretching or tempo sync and require manual manipulation. I thought that was odd at first, till I realized that’s what they’re originally designed for - slicing specific phrases and chop out melodic lines and then triggering them via MIDI to build your own. I heard since that feature was highly requested, Heavyocity created all new tempo synced phrases and rhythmic pedals in Vocalise 2, but I haven’t used that library yet.

One other question. The phrases are in a minor key, when I have something in a major key things fall out of tune. Is this a case where I have to individually tune each sample?
@TobyRyan
@TobyRyan 7 жыл бұрын
In some cases yes, though it really depends on the song. Sometimes instead, I'll play with scale modes in my composition to give the chords new tones that allow Vocalise to feel like it belongs. There’s really a lot of ways to approach that issue - for example: tuning it in Kontakt like you said, or maybe try a Pitch correction plugin like Waves Tune Real-Time (others options: Melodyne, Izotope Nectar, Antares Autotune, etc.) where it locks the singer to a scale in the music. All great options to reach for when you need it.

This program is really great. I like it very much. I have one suggestion and that is you should make a vsti instrument version of this something like a synth or guitar rig. Maybe a little bit more limited but with same idea in mind. One big drawback about damage is that you need kontakt and the high amout of memory sample packs and players use. I know you made punish vst already. This is very good. Your on the right track.

I wonder if there is some kind of a 'live gig vocaliser' - where you could play live harmonically or polyfonicly - and have these beautiful humming voices coming out of what you play live (perhaps all the bendings and change of the body are not possible). I am searching for a way to be able to sing on top of it . Any suggestions? Thank you.
@TobyRyan
@TobyRyan 8 жыл бұрын
+Maria Hiteva Some of the instruments in Vocalise can sort of be used in this way to varying degree. For instance, selecting 'Ooo' or 'Aah' or even 'Mmm' can add background vocals of that vowel by playing the chords polyphonically. The Phrase menu is monophonically played as to where they have set vocal phrases that you trigger with specific keys. While they can be played in-key, the phrases are what they are and can't really be bent into something new without a lot of manual pitch editing. As far as live/studio performance, I recommend using Harmony Engine EVO by Antares or possibly Nectar 2 by Izotope. Both of those plugins offer live vocal harmonies that sing the words you sing, while also being controlled by the keys you play via MIDI. Used subtly, they can sound more natural or use them aggressively for a more robotic sound. Fairly flexible stylistically and can be used live or in the studio. Example of singing with the Harmony Engine Evo plugin stylistically: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i4qscpmfi6yfq80 Product link: www.antarestech.com/products/detail.php?product=Harmony_Engine_Evo_4 Example of Nectar 2 harmony feature: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iniQmqmgrt6Mnq8 Product link: www.izotope.com/en/products/mix/nectar.html That should give you some options artistically to see which works best for you. I really enjoyed your Cat Stevens cover, by the way. Have a great day and thanks for watching!

Vocalise or Vocalise 2? Please advise
@TobyRyan
@TobyRyan 4 жыл бұрын
They both sound great, but the biggest difference is V2 has tempo-synced vocals. V1 does not. Not a huge deal in some cases since most daws have time stretching these days, however, it’s a very, very useful feature to have out of the box. Less work and more time saved. Additionally, tempo sync makes rhythmic motifs much more useful to a wider custom range of BPM. Outside of film scoring, as soon as we start using it in EDM/Pop, etc, locked to a beat, non-tempo-sync’d vocals become difficult. Something to consider based on what you enjoy writing most.

Hey Keith! Great question. In the top section of the instrument where the name is, to the left of the Tune Knob, there's a little icon with the letter "i" inside of a circle. @TobyRyan 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Jamar! Congrats! Yes, the keyboard that shows up at the bottom is a setting in Kontakt. Across the top right of the Kontakt window, there are four icons - a disk, gear, custom window, and minimize window buttons. Select the third icon button and inside that menu, you'll see a few options to turn on. This is where you can select the keyboard. I recommend turning on the Browser, Master, and Keyboard from that menu.

I’ve not found many great vocal libraries of this caliber and quantity that offer these kinds of features outside of Kontakt. However, Vocalise also runs in the free Kontakt Player, so you don’t have to buy the full version of Kontakt to use it, which is nice. If you’re a DIY enthusiast, you could incorporate these same kinds of techniques and apply them in your DAW’s sampler to chop up vocal samples or vocal phrases, lay the slices out in your sampler, then apply effects and trigger them with MIDI in a similar manner, creating your own pads, chops, swells, etc.

Hi Toby, I bought the Vocalise but I have a problem: I can't record the sound while the red keys are activated. It just records the sound without the real time modifications. What am I doing wrong? Thank you
@TobyRyan
@TobyRyan 8 жыл бұрын
That's odd. Perhaps it's a setting in the DAW or possibly the MIDI controller you're using? As for Kontakt, I would make sure your keyboard/MIDI controller and Kontakt are communicating on the same MIDI channel. Where the name "Vocalise" is on the loaded instrument, just above that, to the left of the 'Tune' knob is a little letter "i" with a circle around it. Click that and it'll change that box to add a few more options. Click "MIDI Ch:" to open up a small menu and that allows you to select the same channel as your keyboard/MIDI controller. Alternatively, if you don't know which channel your controller is sending MIDI on, you can set Kontakt's channel to "omni" and it'll listen to every MIDI note and input from your MIDI controller. (It's important to note that Kontakt will now also listen and record all other MIDI devices you have that are sending MIDI notes. If applicable, Example: Keyboard and drum pads) When after setting it to "omni" and recording notes and TFX still don't work, I would try to update Kontakt. The new version doesn't have the red key section, found in this video. Native Instruments has since updated a few things and the TFX now begin at the key of F6 and Motion begins at C7. Lastly, don't hesitate to send an email to Heavyocity's customer support. They're super cool people that can help you get it sorted out. Thanks for watching!

Could someone please tell me if I need the FULL Kontakt 5 version to use this or is Kontakt FREE player enough?
@TobyRyan
@TobyRyan 7 жыл бұрын
+kyzem86 hi! That is a great question. On Heavyocity’s official webpage for Vocalise, in the “Requirements” tab at the bottom, it says “Kontakt 5 (Player) ver 5.5.1.451 or higher”. Plus, it also does not require the flagship ‘Gravity’ library either, which is nice. Yes, Vocalise is a stand alone product for a single price and it works in the free Kontakt Player. A lot of older libraries required the Full Version of Kontakt, but I’ve noticed in the last couple years that Native Instruments has allowed more developers to license and work in the Kontakt Player. Which is very nice! If you want to absolutely know for sure, you should send Heavyocity a message/comment on their Facebook page or Twittter, or even a quick email. They’re super cool people and a great resource to have. Here’s a link to the page I mentioned to open the “Requirements” tan at the bottom for Vocalise. www.heavyocity.com/product/vocalise/ They just released the second stand alone Vocalise 2 as well, so you might listen to that product too and see which one best fits your needs in your studio. Thanks for watching!

Is it possible to use your own samples ? I would really love to use the long reverb washy effect on my own vocals, but I don't know how to make them by myself haha. So it would be cool to mess around with in this plugin
@TobyRyan
@TobyRyan 8 жыл бұрын
+camfre4k Unfortunately not in this library. It's all pre-recorded content. However, the full version of Kontakt 5 can since it's a sampler. It also comes with FX like reverb, saturation and more. Most of the popular DAWs come with a stock sampler and reverb, so if you're looking to trigger your own vocals, I recommend using those to chop up your vocal samples/phrases and then throw on your reverb of choice. Samplers are a lot of fun for custom vocals.

do you need gravity to use this or just Kontakt if you dont need gravity dose it work the same way ?
@TobyRyan
@TobyRyan 7 жыл бұрын
+Dj Tumbao good question! Think of them as separate products and sound libraries. Vocalise uses Heavyocity’s user interface and scripting engine that Gravity was designed with. What that means is you get the benefit of Gravity’s workflow (User Interface and effects like Punish, Compression, EQ, etc.) with the sound library of Vocalise. It requires the latest version of Kontakt or the free Kontakt Player. All of the “Gravity Packs” are this way. Hope that clears it up a bit. Thanks for watching!

Heavyocity Vocalize does require Kontakt, but the good news is that it works inside the free Kontakt Player as well as the Full version. so if i just found similar vocal samples and played them in my sampler, could i essentially get the same effect withouth having to spend all the money on kontakt and this instrument?
@TobyRyan
@TobyRyan 7 жыл бұрын
That's a really good question, basically the answer is yes. Throwing vocal chops in a sampler and calling it a day is far from what Vocalise actually does. So to even begin, it will depend on the sampler and your proficiency with your DAW's tools. Stock DAW samplers don't usually have all the appropriate tools built in, for instance Kontakt comes with features such as time and pitch stretching algorithms so it syncs each vocal sample/phrase with the tempo of the project (assuming each vocal was originally recording to a click and in time and in the same key, respectively.). It also has formant shifting which controls the timbre (the throaty sound) of the voice. Then there's saturation, compression, EQ, reverb, distortion, gating effects, panning, automation and many other features you'll discover along the way. Most of those are usually found in a DAW, others might require third-party plugins. Find the limitations of your sampler of choice, then supplement what's missing with other plugins. Piecing each tool together would be the first challenge, then after you've assembled your tools, the sample search can begin. You'll now need to find or record decent vocal samples (recording is easier, but also a challenge.). The last major part is where you manually adjust each vocal sample, one by one, to be in the same time and key signature, since that will allow you to compose with any future project you write. That part is a lot of work editing, pitching, categorizing, etc., (just takes time.). Finally, you'll export out all of the audio as individual stems to drag into your sampler to then begin making and saving presets to use. It would be an amazing learning experience and push you to be better at production as it stretches you to look at your limitations and hurdle them one by one. By the end, you'll hopefully get something usable that sounds as good as the work you've put in to it. I've done all of that, so I know it's possible with enough time. At the end of the day, with Vocalise, you're basically paying for someone else to do all of that work, professionally for you, knowing it will work in the end as expected and save you tons of time, so then you can actually spend your time composing and writing music. It does not require buying Kontakt (works with the free Kontakt Player.) and sometimes goes on sale for $50 (around Black Friday, Thanksgiving and Christmas.). Have a great week and thanks for watching! The free Kontakt Player also comes with some cool instruments, worth a look. www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/samplers/kontakt-5-player/

@TobyRyan

+Epic Music I haven't tested it since I use the main version, but from the requirements tab on their website it says 'Kontakt (Player)'. So it should. Developers don't usually add the word 'Player' unless it does indeed run in it. Vocalise also does not require Gravity either which is nice. @TobyRyan

Not completely 100% 'voiceover' style dry. You can turn off the additional longer reverb and delay fx options. With everything off, I can hear smaller rooms and recording spaces, but they do compliment the different styled vocalists. Depending on what you're going for, if you turn off the additional larger hall like reverb FX and adjust the Release of a sample to be shorter (with ADSR), the tail can end more abruptly. Great on vocal chops, phrases etc.. I've also used my own reverbs on these and haven't had any issues with the spaces competing. Thanks for watching!

@TobyRyan
@TobyRyan 7 жыл бұрын
The short answer would be no, not for custom recorded vocals. This particular product is a playable instrument with pre-recorded vocals for music composition and film and video game scoring. It's housed in the Kontakt sampler. If you're wanting the effects like the Punish knob, distortion/saturation, compression, etc. then you might look at Heavyocity's Punish plugin. Here's a link to a review to get an idea: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3uodpytmseZsJo The sampler that Vocalise uses is called Kontakt and the full version of Kontakt has effects (reverb, delay, compression, distortion, time warping, tone machines and more) and the ability to chop, twist, mangle, turn into playable pads, pretty much any sound you throw at it. You can use Kontakt sampler on your own recorded vocal phrases like Heavyocity uses the sampler engine for the Vocalise sound library. Another way is to utilize a stock DAW sampler and stock effects to add character and play your vocals like an instrument that way, effectively achieving a similar result. Thanks for watching! Is Gravity required to run this? Thanks
@TobyRyan
@TobyRyan 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! No, it does not require Gravity. It’s a stand alone instrument. Since it has NKS it works in the free Kontakt Player too. It can also work in the Full version of Kontakt as well.

Can this be used to create actual lyrics, or is just vocal air-pad sounds?
@TobyRyan
@TobyRyan 8 жыл бұрын
+spiralsofdanu it's essentially vocal phrases that have the singer singing vowels, humming to a moody, emotional melodic line. There aren't any lyrics. Great for pads and can be turned into rhythmic/plucking note elements. However if lyrics/singing is what you're looking for, you might read into Vocaloid. It synthesizes the singer and sings whatever you write in or type. www.vocaloid.com/en/ there is another company that has made a similar, but free of this type of 'sing-what-you-type' style of VST. www.plogue.com/products/alterego thanks for watching!

Thanks for your reply - really appreciated. I've got Vocaloid 4 - it's ok for electronic music, but I'm trying to go for more of a hard rock/ heavy metal kinda think. I've tried Soundiron's libraries as well, but found them too limited. I'll give alterego a go, unless you know of any alternates?
@TobyRyan
@TobyRyan 8 жыл бұрын
+spiralsofdanu honestly, if you're wanting lifelike, hiring a vocalist is the best way to get the lyrics you want sung in the most realistic way. I've heard people having success with this over on www.fiverr.com you might try contacting a few singers there.

Can she only sing in minor or is there major keys too? like if I was so re route it to a midi keybaord and play major chords would it sing major or just sound funny :P
@TobyRyan
@TobyRyan 7 жыл бұрын
Great question! The Phrase Menu selections are based in minor, but are not exclusive to it. That's really there to give you an idea of the original recorded key, so when playing you'll know where to go if you decide to change a key or progression. I've found that the singers did such a fantastic job of vocal inflections on each note that most of the phrases are usable in Major as well many other scales. They don't often deviate too far from a single note, yet sing a few extra notes to add interest and emotion. If in the case a specific phrase doesn't fit a chord progression quite as expected, simply moving a midi note up or down to find one that fits better is a quick way to find one that works. Since the phrases are all in the same key, it makes that process very easy. This library does feel minor, moody (similar to the artist - ENYA) and often relaxing in the way the singers express themselves, but is highly customizable to sound great in pretty much any scale thrown at it. Aside from the phrases, the other vocal instruments in Vocalise respond exactly like playing a MIDI keyboard, singing the exact notes you play with various vocal tonality and inflections. I write in many other scales including Major, using my MIDI keyboard and it sounds beautiful. Thanks for watching!

@TobyRyan
@TobyRyan 8 жыл бұрын
+MICKIIY III Vocalise requirements on their site says it works with the latest Kontakt Player and the player is actually free, which is pretty sweet. That would allow you to use Vocalise without requiring the full version of Kontakt. You might send them send them a shout on Twitter to double check. They're usually pretty active on there. Here's the link to their site, just scroll to the bottom and click "Requirements" tab. www.heavyocity.com/product/vocalise/

can you drop your own vocal/instrument samples into Vocalise?
@TobyRyan
@TobyRyan 8 жыл бұрын
+The Wormhole Productions No, it's not setup or designed to do that. However, Kontakt 5 (the sampler engine Vocalise is housed in) can do that. If you're wanting to make your own sample based instruments, I highly recommend that. www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/samplers/kontakt-5/

Also, I'd try emailing support to see if they might be able to hook you up with the sale price. If not, you still have an awesome library of sound well worth the asking price! Thanks for watching!

Excellent soft-ware, great sound - a bit like Exhale ... buuut you still can not make it sing WORDS (preferably from a pronunciation dictionary in any language) - would love to see/hear a proper competition to Vocaloids :-) But what an EDM-bag-of tricks (y)
@TobyRyan
@TobyRyan 8 жыл бұрын
+Per Åstrup Olsen Definitely. A Vocaloid that sounded this natural would be truly astonishing and is certainly welcome in many styles beyond EDM. I'm sure with the rise of developers in audio DSP, plugins, etc., we'll see more of that in the future. I would really enjoy using it. :-D

+superjet2771 Sure thing! A lot of new Kontakt instruments work with the Player now which is really nice. Always double check the product Requirements though, to be safe. I usually send an email over to Heavyocity's support and ask. They're really cool people.

@TobyRyan 8 жыл бұрын
+Florent Magere EXHALE is phenomenal at what it does and is quite versatile with it's vocal chants, inflections and effects. Though it's a much larger library of 10GB whereas Vocalise is targeted at Film and Video game composers needing a specific style of singing, weighing in at around 4GB. Given the library size and price difference, both end up being very useful for their purposes and offer the best bang for the budget. Thanks for watching!

I dont even know why you are comparing the two , to me they are 2 completely different products . I also think the sound quality is way better in this one . The engine in Exhale is a pain in the ass to manipulate and this is $99 . This wins hands down . period .
