Astounding performance of one of my favourite classical pieces. That trombone section is phenomenal, being a trombonist myself, I have some serious respect for those players. There are some really tough licks near the end... Great english horn solo!

Absolutely brilliant. I first heard this overture at an after school musical appreciation class nearly 60 years ago. It became one of my favourites then, and still is today.

God, it's so hard to find a good video of this work here on youtube - this has got to be the best of here on youtube. Spare me the various butchering of this work by the amateurish conductors. Saraste knows how to drive the buildup of the grand romantic theme between the upper and lower strings. The English horn solo compares well with the big names.

The overture of the Roman Carnival includes one of the most beautiful melodies that were ever played by the English horn. For sure, there is the solo of Tristan, but this is another story.

My favourite concert hall in the world. They hand you a beer as you walk off stage. Think it is owned or sponsored by a local brewery. A tradition that should be adopted globally in my view.

If any piece of music makes you want to take up the cor anglaise then this should. Berlioz was " out of the box" with his orchestration. He even used the little e flat clarinet in his Symphony Fantastique. He played the flute and guitar and his dad was an acupuncturist! Great performance. Thank you. Bill - UK

The begiing is typical form Berloiz: the allegro is stopped after a very few music. And after that, an unforgettable melody of the English horn. This is a great score. JPS conducts it perfectly.

The more I hear performances from Jukka Pekka Saraste the more I'm convinced he is one of the best conductors in the World today. How far sighted of the WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln to appoint him as their chief. IMO he is far superior to Simon Rattle recently chief cond. of the Berlin Philharmonic and now with the London Symphony Orchestra. Shame the audio quality here is so bad.

English horn: actually a mistranslation, since the original spelling of the French was "cor anglé", an "angled horn", originally played with a mouthpiece like a brass instrument. I have this horse's-mouth from a player whose walls are adorned with earlier instruments to this "shawm" design.

At 7' the winds remain perfectly audible over the chords of trombones, which is indeed very difficult.

L'interprétation de cette musique pleine d'images, est ici contenue malgré la fougue de son écriture, pleine d'histoire humaine. Peut-on penser à Wagner quand on écoute Berlioz ?

Il me rappelle souvent Beethoven, dont il était très impressionné. Le jeune Berlioz a été énormément ému par Harriet Smithson (l'actrice shakespearienne), Gluck et Beethoven - mais pas forcément dans cet ordre !

At times the strings aren't audible. Poor audio balance. Also, would have preferred a vibrato with the other wise lovely English horn solo.
