This video shows how to service the classic Heddon 260R spin fishing reel. This reel was performing poorly and was restored. See how to take apart and service it now.
I have been servicing fishing reels for over 20 years and am sharing my experiences here. If you enjoy the video, please like it and subscribe.

I've got one of these in my vintage reel collection. It's in mint condition inside and out. Love these old Heddons!!

These are simple designs that are built like tanks. I stopped collecting, it got out of control. I only have a few sentimental reels that I still hold onto, otherwise, I like to pass them on to others to enjoy. Thanks for the note Brad - Dennis

I may need help 😞. Today I purchased a Heddon 220R and a Penn Peer 109 "knuckle buster." At least it's a legal addiction!

Dennis, what do you think about guys fishing the Penn Z series reels that load them with grease for surf fishing. They're massively popular even today as I'm sure you know. Guys will literally fill the entire body with grease to avoid saltwater. I've also seen guys with new Daiwa BG's who will load the handle area with a tackier grease to avoid salt. They remove it after each trip on the BG's but guys will load Penn Z's for an entire season.

Jeff - that's an old timer's trick and I am OK with overloading it, so long as you take care to keep it clean and change it from season to season. It is an old time way to stop water intrusion, but you need to be careful not to leave it in too long, otherwise any contaminants that are trapped in the grease will become abrasive and grind down the reel after time. Newer reels have better seals and are less likely to face some of the old time issues. I have not heard the handle load on the BG series. I would guess it is similar to the other method if they find that water is coming in there. Remember, this method is usually used by guys waist deep in the waves where the reel is frequently taking on water. The guy on the beach does not need to do this. Thanks for asking - Dennis

Another helpful video, Dennis. The past few months I started collecting Heddon spinners, got about 13 or 14 in various sizes. Don't have the 260R yet, but do have the 205R and 220R,. The 205R has a ball bearing on the pinion. So far the 233, 248, and 277 are my favorites.

Dennis, do you put drag grease on the metal washers also or just the drag washers?
@2ndChanceTackle

I don't grease the metal washers. They don't absorb it. I spread the drag grease on the fabric washer and rub it in with my gloved hand, then wipe off the excess. Too much grease us useless. The purpose of the grease is to keep the washers from drying out and cracking - Thanks for asking - Dennis

Does any have the back nut that would fit the 260-R ?

Ethan - Sorry for not responding earlier. I think you are going to have a tough time finding this. I am not aware of any consistent source for these parts. Most find the parts by acquiring a donor reel through EBAY, flea market, etc. Dennis
