Huh. Never heard about people NOT liking hedgehogs in their gardens before. Here in Sweden we are encouraged as kids to be nice to them, and finding one in your garden is equal to seeing a rainbow in the amount of happiness it brings to a child (in my experience). Also, as a European, I find the domesticated hedgehog weird. It doesn't look right for me, as I am more used to the European hedgehog. But is's still cute.

We had a hedgie for over 7 years and LOVED HER! We're about to get our second. Minis was very friendly and curious. She never balled up once she was comfortable in our home after getting her as a baby. Just like any other animal, the more you socialize it, the happier it will be. Minnie was a very picky eater but she did well on great quality cat food and mealworms and occasional other other treats.

I was looking after a wild hedgehog just a few weeks ago! :D They're endangered in the UK and one was sniffing around my house in the middle of the day (nonono should never be out in daylight) so I warmed him up, weighed him and then after a quick snack he was out again. I put out cat food for him for a couple of weeks but he seems to be hibernating now :D

Couple notes for those watching this video. I hate to be a brat and correct a few things, but I'm going to anyway because it's important those watching know. The gloves do nothing but make them more grouchy /: Gloves block your scent from them, which means you seem far more of a predator than you are. So those that are trying to bond with your hedgehog, do *not* wear gloves. If they are "grumpy" you can use a piece of fleece to protect your skin, or just handle them more often, you'll get used to the quills after time, and they'll get used to your scent and will lay them flat more often. As for the wheel, the wheel in this video is a Wodent Wheel and isn't really appropriate for most hogs. They have bad eyesight and often turn around *in* their wheels midrun. A closed off wheel like that can be incredibly dangerous if your hog isn't prone to paying attention to the openings. If your hog is one of those that it isn't appropriate for, check out Carolina Storm Wheels on Etsy. They're designed specifically for hedgehogs and are the safest wheels available. In store wheels that would work are the 12" Comfort Wheel and the 12" Flying Saucer, though be aware that the Flying Saucers are prone to breaking after a few months so you'll likely have to repurchase if you're going that route. Their diets are controversial, but I stress to anyone reading this to avoid foods geared toward hedgehogs. I know, I know, counter-intuitive. But I say this because if you take the time to read the ingredients of the foods designed for hedgehogs, they are incredibly low quality. They've been linked to malnutrition and skin irritations because of their lack of nutrients, they have also been linked to hedgehog obesity, which is incredibly common in hedgehogs. Cat foods are much more widely suggested because of the ability to actually get a good quality food. Something between 30-35% protein and under 15% fat is key, as well as making sure the ingredients are high quality and not things like corn or soy.

hedgehogs are now part of the order Eulipotyphla, meaning 'well fat and blind' and there closest relatives are shrews, moles and solenodons. The later three were originally part of the order soricomorpha, but from recent genetic testing, scientists found out that this group is paraphyletic. Meaning that from it's last common ancester it includes all of its descendants, but not all of its descendants, so scientists reclassified soricomorpha and erinaceomorpha into Eulipotyphla.

Hedgehogs are amazing little creatures. Thanks for the info! I saw your previous video on the basics of animal enrichment ( Behavioral Enrichment ). In a future video, I'd love to see more specifics, such as: Which animal needs the least enrichment? Which animal needs the most? And, if different, which animals love it most and which are hard to please? And where do you look for new ideas? I'm always trying to think of new things for my cats to explore (both physically - via cardboard mazes and other structures - and with their other senses). It can be a challenge with our very elderly cat (17 years), but the younger ones (5 years and 8 years) are game for just about anything. I've actually been getting a lot of good ideas from places like Big Cat Rescue (it's amazing how much overlap there is between what big cats and little cats enjoy).

Great video, Jessi! A few things from my experiences as a former hedgehog owner as well... First of all, you were right on saying they don't make very good "pets" in the traditional sense, and I think that's important to note. That doesn't mean the right person wouldn't love owning one but they have to understand that they involve a lot of work and there is very little "reward"-- in other words, if you own a hedgehog, don't expect it to play with you or even really want to be around you. You essentially just get to provide for it and observe it, which is certainly rewarding in it's own way. But people wanting to get a hedgehog shouldn't trick themselves into thinking they're going to be best friends. Secondly, in all my research I did prior to taking in my hedgehog, I read that it's best to house them in a cage that had bars going vertical as opposed to horizontal. I kept mine in a single-story ferret nation cage. This is because they will climb the side of the cage like a ladder but not know how to get down so just end up falling. I never had any personal experience with this since I didn't have horizontal bars but I see that Groucho's cage is like that so I was wondering if you could weigh in on this! Have you had any problems with that? Also, I wish you'd touched on self-anointing! I think that's one of the most interesting things hedgehogs do. Just another reason why they are so amazing!
@AmandaGarrellArt10 жыл бұрын
Bar climbing mostly comes from boredom. It is also common in hamsters. It is mostly just precautionary.

Jessi, God knows I love your work, but allow me to be pedantic! "A vertebrae" is like saying "a cats." They do have a vertebral column made of many vertebrae. Thank you so much for these videos, I learn so much!
@paulunga4 жыл бұрын
Additionally, if you're squeamish about poop and other excretions, hedgehogs might not be for you. They "self-anoint" by smearing feces or chewed-up food all over their quills, depending on the hedgehog. Male hedgehogs also might get a sperm-crusted belly. In general they're probably not a great pet if you just want something cute and easy to take care of. I did meet some very friendly and social hedgehogs, though.

Hi Jessie! Wonderful video as usual! (ps I love sci-show talk show mostly because you are there with your amazing animals) I have a pet hedgehog and he is a wonderful little fellow, but I am concerned about bedding. He currently has the aspen bedding on his wheel and toilet side and carefresh on the other for lower dust when sleeping but sometimes he does get the shavings stuck in his penile sheath (not hard to remove but it is rather uncomfortable for him!) I am considering fleece as a liner for the cage but I am not sure as I want to encourage his natural digging and burrowing behaviour as well. The carefresh is nice so far but the only draw back is the price vs volume in the long run. My hedgehog (Charlie) has a very large cage to accommodate his needs after all. Any advice or insight is very appreciated! From a fan! -Cassandra

After bathing an IR lamp at the right temp would be good or if they like it a fan at the right setting or make a burrow with some blankets and let them dry inside make the hole as small as you can or partially close it as soon as the hedgehog is settled inside. Remember the last one is just a temporary shelter because I don't know how the moisture might affect the permanent shelter in the cage.

My favorite animal! (Or one of them anyway...I'm drawn to spikey critters) Only partially influenced by my interest in Sonic...but I love the real thing as well. I got to handle/care for one when I was volunteering at the zoo I've previously talked about. He was grumpy too, and often did that hiss-jump-flinch thing that you demonstrated. He also peed all over my shirt. XD; The people there said that was a sort of "initiation", and that he did that to everybody who handled him at some point. I kind of want one, but also kind of don't think I would have the right conditions to care for one. Also, I'm not sure if they're allowed in my state without a permit. So I'll just enjoy them without having one as a pet. (at least at this time) Also, I got to meet a couple wild ones one time when I went to Switzerland. That was cool. The European ones can get to twice the size of the domestic ones! ALSO, also...That shaymin joke. XDXD Laughed so hard I got a headache.

My cat was sitting next to me and when the hedgehog hissed he was terrified! I had to rewind the video and show him it was just a hedgehog so that he would calm down, I think he thought there was another cat in the house at first haha. Also my cat is a hunting machine, he brings back rats, voles, mice, birds, (and once even a rabbit) all the time, I feel bad for the rodent population because he really must be decimating it. We already have a bell on his collar and keep him inside at night but it doesn't help, he can go outside and come back with a dead animal in minutes. Anyway I was wondering if you have any tips to try and prevent him hunting as often

He doesn’t like people but we still take him out a half hour every night for the last 5 years. When we got him he was only fed dry cheap cat food, had an igloo hut he couldn’t fit in, no toys or heat source, nothing to roll under and hide. I spent $500 on him in the first 24hrs. Could you please do one of these on bunnies? I own two, and trying to find information I KNOW I can trust on how best to take care of them has been difficult, and I often see different sites and people contradicting each other. I love my two bunnies, and I really want to make sure they're happy and healthy. I have a Dwarf Lionhead named Roary, and my sister has a dwarf lop named Bonnie. I do want to own bunnies later in life, and I want to make sure I have the knowledge to do so. It's been a lot of trial and error and, unfortunately, a lot of vet visits. We got them from a pet store (not knowing any better), and they were younger than they should have been, and Roary had parasites. We currently have a "bunny room" set up in our house so they can have plenty of room to run around. They have a burrow, two large litterboxes (they're technically for cats, haha) , two food bowls, two water bowls (they could never seem to get the hang of water bottles), fresh hay on their litterboxes, and veggies every night (usually kale and carrots, sometimes cilantro). They are a bonded pair-to the point where if one needs a check up or has to go to the vet, the other must go too. Otherwise they'll get very anxious and go into stasis. We clean the litterboxes every weekend and vacuum the room of excess hay and fur. I haven't watched all of your videos, and I know you do emphasize knowing what you're getting into before you get a pet, but if you could do a video on how to find reputable breeders and animal shelters in your area, that would be amazing. If you actually see this, haha, thanks for reading! And sorry for the length.

O_o I've never heard of ANYONE hating hedgehogs here in the UK, for any reason at all. I really dunno where you got your 'fact' about them being hated for eating berries, but I have hedgies living right next to my strawberry patch, and they leave the berries completely alone... and they can't climb raspberry canes or blackcurrant bushes. Its birds that are problematic for berry-eating. o_O

But I DO grow my own food (including blueberries & all the other aforementioned 'berries') and the hedgehogs live happily on my fruit and veg plot, and do not disturb any of my crops. They eat the slugs and insects and so protect the crops, they're a growers friend. :-)
@animalwondersmontana9 жыл бұрын
kaiiana I used think everyone loved hedgehogs too! I was approached by someone from Switzerland during a public presentation and he told me that where he was from, many people who grew strawberries strongly disliked having hedgehogs around because they would eat the berries. The more people you meet, the more opinions and personal experiences you get to hear :)
@kaiiana9 жыл бұрын
AnimalWonders Montana I can't help wonder if he is mistakenly blaming the hedgehog for the work of slugs, because the presence of slugs would attract hedgies. Wildlife and gardening are my two great passions, and I have searched everywhere and cannot find one reference to hedgehogs being anything other than beneficial. I BEG you to rethink this video, for a VERY good reason. Hedgehogs are in rapid decline in many places. The UK have seen a drop from 36million down to just 1 million in only a couple of decades. They're in serious trouble. The two main causes of fatality and injury that wildlife rescues here see are through careless gardening. Strimmers and garden netting being the two top threats. Rescue centres here are reeeally trying hard to get gardeners to be more conscious of hedgehogs & to make their gardens safe for them. You telling them that they are a pest for eating fruit is v detrimental to that, particularly because it could encourage fruit gardeners to net their fruit to protect it from hedgies, which is lethal to them! Sooo many get tangled up in netting and die, or end up in wildlife rescue centres like the one I volunteer at with deadly wounds from netting. Please please, go fact check this... speak to Tiggywinkles UK, or even Pro-Igel in Switzerland. I've been growing veg since i was a child and have read every fruit& veg growers book under the sun and this is the first time I've ever heard this said about hedgehogs and I strongly doubt its truth. I really think the person you spoke to has the wrong culprit. :-(

Just out of curiousity, what sort of weights of food to you feed hedgehogs? I know there is probably an equation to work out what weight of hedgehog needs what weight of food, but I haven't seen one for them.

There is hedgehog food you can buy but it's super unhealthy. Hedgehogs do best on a special mix of dry cat food supplemented by mealworms and produce.
