Wrestling With Wregret

5 жыл бұрын

The goal of any bad guy in wrestling is to get "heat" ... but what happens when a baddie crosses the line and gets boring or stale? And just WHERE is that line? I examine the issue between "heel heat" and "go-away heat" and try and find the answer!

Zbyszko had betrayed Bruno Sammartino, his own mentor! At the time, people would have been more likely to forgive him if he'd beaten _their own mothers_ with a steel chair! I do completely agree with Brian about of the WWE's creative process at this point can't really tell the difference (and impact) between both kinds of heel heat, and absolutely true that any heel in WWE will have a major disadvantage over one in AEW or the Indies due to the lack of creative self-control. Now we could get into the illogical booking, over-exposure sure... but probably the biggest reason MJF is succeeding where Corbin is seemingly failing I think ties into what Adam Cole was talking about and something Brian touched on about MJF always being in-gimmick when he does interviews and appearances (I think I've seen one out of 30 where he wasn't and it was from 4 years ago). In an age of social media, even if you are a child fan and more willing to take what's on TV at face value, it doesn't mean you probably don't know half of the insider terms and workings, as popular KZbinrs and Podcasters discuss it regularly, and they can go on Twitter or Instagram and see someone like Sami Zayn try and odd balancing act between the "heel" he is on WWE TV, with genuine and heartfelt efforts to raise money for mobile hospitals in Syria. It's why I can understand WWE wanting more control over their talents social media profiles, as it can really diminish the idea that someone is a dangerous heel who can/will destroy a popular champion (not that WWE has many of the latter either these days) if you get those peaks behind the curtain as to what the person is really like. This goes in reverse as well as look at the blow-back on Seth Rollins, someone WWE is desperate to get over as a cool fighting champion who stands up for the WWE Universe, but on twitter and recent interviews (which then spread via social media) he comes over as an obnoxious corporate stooge. I mean, I get suspension of disbelief an all, but why would I cheer intentionally for Rollins when I'm left thinking he's a dick in real life, or boo and hate on Zayn when he's actually a decent person. That said best example of keeping it up on all outlets is probably Rosemary in Impact...

For the last paragraph is because it is theartre. Seth Rollins isn't Colby Lopez but a character played by Colby Lopez. Sami Zayn isn't Rami Sebei but a character played by Rami Sebei. I mean that's how I see it. Also I think it kind of bad for heels that get cheered, they're putting their all out there to not have their characters liked and people are cheering them on.

@RiC_David

As Brian alluded, it's quite misleading to use that term seeing as X-Pac was actually only so maligned for about two years (2001-2003) and outside of that window of shame he's been very popular and a consistent highlight of any wrestling card he's on. Don't get me wrong, people could not stand him during his lame X-Factor years (and the theme song doesn't get enough blame, look up Uncle Cracker's X-Factor theme if you dare..you'll probably need to mispell the name but I forget how) but he's been beloved before and after while Go Away Heat has been in existence for decades. I always thought Jeff Jarrett in late WCW and most of his TNA career deserved it more personally.

Exactly. This is the best definition I've seen in the comments. It describes why the Cena character--a face--has gotten go-away heat at different levels for almost 15 years. Brian doesn't seem to grasp what Cena represents to fans who are interested in compelling characters inside the ring and on the microphone. Cena was initially a compelling character with the Vanilla Ice gimmick. He cut solid promos and could hold his own in the ring. As soon as he beat JBL at Mania and became The Guy™, they watered down his moveset (ostensibly to protect the star product as much as possible); gradually dumbed down his promos; and pretty soon stripped away his gimmick, to the point he was Just a Nice Guy™ who also happened to be indestructible--shattering any reasonable suspension of disbelief. Brian alluded to the concept of overbooking/overexposure and other aspects of creative, which Cena was absolutely the prime example of in the late 2000s. For his street fight against The Great Khali, I expected a bowling shoe match that would play to their strengths as brawlers. But after Khali beat him up around the whole arena, Cena gave him one little fireman's carry for an immediate win. As my dad said, "Next week he'll fight a one-on-three handicap match against a lion, a tiger, and a bear, and still win easily." It was unenjoyable and therefore unwatchable to many fans. My whole friend group gave up on WWE because of Cena. I started to get a little interested again when Cena was out with an injury, but then they had him win the Royal Rumble in his return as No. 30 entrant. It shattered my suspension of disbelief and tolerance for getting Cena shoved down my throat for the last time. I vowed that day to stop watching WWE and haven't regretted it. New eras, same old...

Corbin's heat is an amalgamation of both He plays the heel character perfectly drawing heat in all the right ways (see pre-Constable days) He has go-away heat and this comes from this character portrayal but more for the situations that WWE keeps putting him in Fans, at least me, are just tired of seeing him inserted over and over and over into storylines ahead of more deserving, even squashed, wrestlers. He should not have more main events than Balor for example and also begs the question of how many talents have been set to the background in lieu of a confusing Corbin push. Ravishing Rick Rude, heel Jericho, Jake the Snake and definitely the Iron Sheik were perfect heel heat creators.

Notes from a Midcard J.O.B.Squader; What made heels like Cornette,Heenan and Heyman(at least during his Dangerously years) have great "Heel Heat" was the fact that they were willing to let themselves get beat-up/mocked to put over whoever was selected as "The Face" during the storyline. Look at the now infamous Cornette-vs.Paul E.Dangerously Heel Feud from back in the early 80's(i think,but i'm not certain of the year): While nobody liked either Manager at the time(especially Cornette in the Mid-deep South ),fans chose one of the most hated managers @ the time over the Yuppie-with-a Cell phone to cheer for. Imho,it's not really the type of "Heat" the Heel get's,it's more about how you present said Heel that makes a difference.Wrestling Heels are just going to be treated differently than Manager Heels,wether WWE likes it or not.... easiest way to describe it. Good heat is when you pay money cause you wanna see the heel get his ass kicked. I think Go-Away Heat shouldn't be blamed on the performer. Think back to the start of the Second brand split, people were interested to see what Baron Corbin (and others such as Carmella, Alexa Bliss & American Alpha, all of whom has been heel or at least teased a heel turn in the case of Jason Jordan at least once on the Main Roster) was going to do. But a few years later and a lot of people say Baron has Go-Away Heat which I think is unjustified because they didn't react this way when he won MITB, a match which basically puts a stamp of approval on a performer (I know it didn't pan out for him but I'm talking about him winning the match), they booed him, sure, but that was definitely Heel Heat as I didn't see or hear of many people demanding Corbin be put off TV. They only started reacting this way when WWE booked him in a position where he had to deal with that reaction by saying it's Baron's fault ratings are down. Another thing that needs to be thought of is how many people in the current era of Wrestling are actually good at getting heel heat and keeping it? Samoa Joe? No, have you listened to his entrance with basically the whole arena chanting "JOE! JOE! JOE!". Sami Zayn? Shinsuke Nakamura? People still sing to both of their theme songs (at least try despite Nakamura's theme was changed) and chant for both men. AJ Styles? People respect the guy so much (definitely deserved) that they chant and cheer for AJ Styles. Baron Corbin is a heel who gets heat and because people want him off TV, he keeps that heat. So is Go-Away Heat actually the best kind of heat a wrestler can have today? I'd say probably. Because as wrestling fans, we'll still watch wrestling even if we want someone off TV. Even if we say we want Baron off TV we'll still tune in every week, see Baron nearly every week and boo Baron every time he appears. So as few wrestlers can keep genuine Heal Heat, Go-Away Heat might be a better option. As if you're a really good heel, people probably won't want to see you anyway.

Baron Corbin *could* have the proper heat, he has the right smugness and talent. Has a good look, his finisher(s) look great. Corbin can be an effective heel when he's allowed to but as you call out WWE pinning the booking issues on him as a talent really hurt that. He was overexposed too sure, but that could've worked too if they'd done something to run with it instead of trying to make him a scapegoat for crap he's not actually responsible for. I really wanted (still do to an extent) Corbin to be treated like a legitimate top heel instead of what felt like a holdover until Brock was around again. Sidenote: I loved his early NXT days with the audience counting up for how quickly he'd destroy his opponent. That was awesome. X-Pac getting the go away heat when he did feels undeserved in restrospect, the guy was a helluva talent for most of his career and put on some damn good matches. He'd probably be one of the guys who would excel in today's environment more than he did in the past and maybe thanks to less party hard influences in the back now he'd have come out better in the end too. MJF is solid freaking gold. The dude is only 23 and he's as good on the mic as veterans who have been in the business for longer than he's been alive. He, like Velveteen Dream, just has "IT" that factor you can't really quantify or describe all that well. Overexposure is 100% the problem. I don't have an issue with Baron Corbin in his promos or in his ring work, sure his matches aren't exactly 5 star classics but he has a few really well executed moves. His promo work is golden, he knows how to wind people up and it's entertaining but having him in 20 minute matches on a weekly basis, sometimes twice a week where it's the same cheap heel heat and beatdowns gets tiring and it makes me not want to watch him at all which is a shame because I do have some nice words to say about him. If the booking was better and he was used more sparingly in shorter matches I'd be more than happy watching big baldy Bazza on a weekly basis and even in higher card angles.

I think Brian touched on this...Corbin's go away heat is entirely on the company over using him, then blaming him (in storyline) for the bad creative...Corbin as a heel that is used in a more sparingly manner is fantastic, his promo work is great, his facial expressions are top notch, his move set is crisp and looks devastating, he doesn't let the fact fans hate him bother him (in fact i think he loves it, and you can see it on his face when he is about to do something that they crowd is going to absolutely boo, he is giddy with anticipation), i was saying this on social media a couple of years ago he will be one of their top heels (though they then went and did the end of 2018/start of 2019 with him, so he may have a longer road as the fans will still think he has go away heat at the moment) but i am almost willing to bet they will make him King of the Ring this year, purely for the reaction and knowing he can handle the blowback. If Drew or Andrade (the 2 i think "should" win) win the fans may actually cheer...which isn't good for 2 of the other big Heels in the company....

The funny thing about Corbin is that he was legitimately hated during his constable run in 2018 but for some reason in mid and late 2019 the dislike started to not only die down but even weirder they started to defend Corbin because he has "heat" which basically not only ignores all of the Go-Away Heat he had in 2018 and early 2019 but also the entire history of wrestlers that were legit hated like X-Pac, Triple H, Eva Marie, Jinder Mahal and everyone's favorite Roman Reigns. And you wanna know why: AEW. Since it's inception and existence as an alternative to WWE it has created this strange and unusual reaction where fans of WWE that criticized bad decisions now suddenly takes a defensively hostile stance against AEW by accusing anyone that criticizes WWE as an AEW defender no matter how right they are and of course started to ironically defend awful decisions they once hated like Corbin's push, particularly his King run that was the absolute low point of his character just to stick it to AEW. Hypocrisy at it's finest.

I think the reason why Corbin is really disliked is because of how much a spotlight he got. Usually great heels build their way into that spotlight with a twisted justification or circumstances that push them into that spot. Kevin Owens was not pushed down our throats as a heel, but he made the most of his heel spots that created this organic heat. I feel the biggest issue of characters in the modern WWE is creative does not allow the wrestler to develop a connection with the crowd. A good example of organic character development was how the rock was booed and heckled as a baby face then embraced the how the crowd wanted to hate him and just ran with a justified arrogance.

Go away heat is produced when the heel gives no satisfying conclusions. This happens when the heel is not assigned to a storyline, or rivalry, and is instead a heel for being a heel's sake. I actually think we can easily discount the idea that Baron Corbin is one of the best heels in the business by asking one simple question, "Who has come out of a Baron Corbin feud more over than they went into it?" A good heel, especially an upper midcard heel like Corbin should leave people primed for bigger things, but almost every feud with Corbin has damaged the momentum of the guy he's facing.
@ktownshutdown21
@ktownshutdown21 5 жыл бұрын
Yep, look no further than Seth Rollins. His match with AJ was well received, but then his reign was grinded to a screeching halt with his 84 month feud with Corbin, getting so bad that fans started to turn on HIM too. Corbin is at BEST a LOWWWW mid carder, quite frankly on the level of The Ascension or Mojo Rawley. Use him to kickstart better newbies and that's it.

@@ktownshutdown21 corbin is too good to be a mojo rawley. he's more of a hardcore holly. you beat him to get into the upper midcard, like the IC title chase. in the attitude era, he would've been a great european champion. he should be in 1 backstage segment a week with squash matches on heat and a decent length match on either raw or smackdown..

One thing I thought about while sleeping on this topic. You can have both go-away heat and heel heat with different fans at the same time. It’s not always an argument. (Which Brian touched on in the outro) And I think the best heat was pre kayfabe, 80’s heat. Seeing those crowds eviscerating the heels. And you feel those same emotions. MJF studies those wrestlers which is why he channels it so well.

In my opinion, the reason for baron Corbin's turn happened very shortly after his wardrobe and hair change. To me he was and felt like a legitimate bad ass, the way he acted then he became a sellout in a way and it almost felt like he was trying too hard to be this new persona. Bring back the lone wolf baron Corbin and bury king ceo Corbin. That's what should happen

In my opinion there has been no better heel in the last three years than Tomasso Ciampa. His character after he turned heel and even the story of why he ended up turning heel was perfect in every way, and especially in the way that he was able to manipulate and exploit Johnny Gargano to get what he wanted. I especially loved how during their second match at Takeover: Chicago II how they did something of a double turn where Johnny just snapped and started viciously attacking Ciampa; and from that point on, Johnny wasn't the tried and true baby-face that he had been up to that point and eventually Ciampa ended up turning him heel as well. And even though he was a heel, I honestly always rooted for Ciampa because I thought his story about the fans turning their backs on him and only ever talking about Johnny was justified; he was just as much a part of DIY as Johnny was, and he was every bit as good as Johnny but no one ever appreciated him for everything he did, and he proved just how good he was with the heel turn and the amazing matches that he had all year.
