Well if I'm not wrong asura is the founder of the Uzumaki and Senju clans meaning he's the most important besides the Otsusuki (the alien ones not the human ones) hagorormo, Hamura, Indra, and black zetsu. Ofc black zetsu lived through all these years just to revive his mother, Indra started the Uchiha clan, Hamura started the hyuga, Hagoromo started the spread of ninjutsu or at the time ninshu, and well you know what the rets of the Otsusuki does. It is explicitly stated that Madara "installed the Izanagi in his right eye." It can be implied to be an indirect statement to prove that Kabuto's hypothesis on the rinnegan coming after the Sharingan is wrong, and that the only thing necessary to awaken it was the mix of Ashura and Indra chakra.

Hey, sorry for the 8 month later reply. After Madara sacrificed his right eye, he implanted Hashirama tissue into himself. Combining his chakra with Hashirama's awakened Hagoromo's chakra, causing him to gain the rinnegan in both eyes. In short, his right eye that was sacrificed had its vision restored and upgraded to a dual pair of rinnegan.

Typically, once someone reaches the Rinnegan, they can't go back to the Sharingan unless they have one eye with Sharingan and the other with Rinnegan. There are definitely some plot holes, but they can be explained away by injecting previously unthought-of elements.
