Me as well back in the late 80's, for about 5 years and then they moved me on to a MOZP. The Kord 64 for a great little press. You cant find them in Australia anymore they all got shipped off to Asia. I tried to buy one about 10 years ago. None around.

The Heidelberg KORD helped so many flatbed letterpress printers "re - train"/learn rotary offset printing because the feeder and delivery were the same as the Heidelberg KSB/KSBA etc. presses. When the KORD 62 first came out, it was black like the letterpress machines. And technically the KORD should not work because ink and moisture have to travel "upwards" against gravity. Heidelberg discontinued the KORD in 1986, when it had been in production alongside the M - Offset range for 6 years. But some printers said that the MO presses never had the rolling power of the KORD and KORS. Keep up your good work. Stay safe and well.

Very true, my first year of my apprenticeship was on a Heidelberg Platen and Heidelberg Cylinder, would have been harder to transition without the cylinder in the mix.

You are right about the MO'S not having the rolling power, the Kords killed the MO's or Gtos for rolling power as they had bigger diameter forms and roller distribution setup. Its been near 30 years since I was near any of the Heidelberg Presses, went into Flexo around 1995.

@iankearns774. Just seen your posts on YT. You may already have heard this. Back in the day, I was told that in Germany, it was commonplace for printers with the Heidelberg 72 Speedmaster multi - colour to have a KORS as a proofing press! You can always tell how successful a certain model of Heidelberg press is by its lifespan/longevity. For example, the smaller S - Offset range (SORK/SORM) lasted 33 years. (The earliest machines were black and had Spiess feeders until Heidelberg developed their own stream feeder). These were superceded by the SM74. However the M - Offset range ran from 1980 (released at IPEX) until the mid 1990’s - again superseded by the SM74. That’s 15/16 years tops! Apparently the M - Offset presses were largely designed through “CAD simulation” and so had “limitations”, were built to a price (vs. Komori Sprint, Solna 225, Roland Favorit etc.) and had a problematic entry into the market. The rolling power of a SM72 4 colour for solid colours was far superior to that of the MOV press on SRA2 size work. But Heidelberg learnt an awful lot from the MO generation. Hence the SM74 was a much better press when it was released to market. You and yours stay safe and well.

Correct the MO never had the inking power of a KORD. Kord was right up there with the S lines.

I think that any offset can be used by one person. But if you want to speed up, then use two.

I was thinking the same, I ran a Speedmaster 74 perfector by myself. Just doing bookwork but I have never seen two people on a Kord. A bit of overkill I reckon.

I too went to bigger presses but could still run a kord with my eyes closed. Speedmasters were next and the new ones look so automated and expensive. Glad I'm out of the business here in America the EPA has made press work impossible. It all went to Asia or Mexico. Shame to see a good trade fall apart from government abuse

Amateur printers. Guards missing, 2 men on a single colour. Used to run heidelberg 102sp with coater on my own. Should always tighten the 2 centre bolts before the outer when putting plates on. Wouldn't last 5 minutes in a professional set up.

@StuartLewis-vd3br. Give these fellas a break! I bet these operatives have had little or no “formal training” and have “learnt to print” solely on this KORD press in this company. And it’s highly likely that the person(s) who trained them got it from someone else second or third hand which means gaps in the basics of press operation. Some of us were fortunate enough to be formally trained by a journeyman in a structured apprenticeship - maybe even day release to print college. And if you were really lucky, your boss bought a brand new press and the manufacturer’s agent sent along a field demonstrator/trainer to show how to get the best from the machine. Stay safe and well.
