I love all your videos, but this one particularly. I worked for a unit of Bayer AG in Indiana, and visited Heidelberg on a cloudy, misty Tuesday in November 1986 on a recreational group tour with fellow employees. That included the group tour of the Schloss and thus the interior, but the truly impressive part was that intricate exterior facade. I had seen an article on Heidelberg before the trip and split off by myself after lunch to see the Studentinkarzer. At that time, there was a fellow sitting on the landing of the staircase with a little money box to collect admission, just 1-2 DM per person. One of my coworkers in Indiana was a German on an interim assignment who'd attained his doctorate at Heidelberg. After I got back home, he asked to see my trip pictures. As he went through the stack, he exclaimed "Ach!!! Der Studentinkarzer!!!" when he saw it. He then admitted that he spent something like six years in Heidelberg but never visited it--not even once.

Ahhh, isn't that the truth! When you live in a place, you always think you'll get to the tourist attractions one day. So cool that you got to see the student jail and share the photos with your coworker!

Hey, I'm from Heidelberg and I think it's a nice video, very informative and beautiful! 😊 However, I want to point out two things you said that aren't completely true actually. First, the Heidelberger Schloss wasn't destroyed by lightning and fire only, it was destroyed by the French under Ludwig XIV. This fact is more important (to us) because it was hit by lightning much later in history, like you said 1:28, when people tried to rebuilt it and this has nothing to do with the actual destruction during war. Second, and correct me if I'm wrong but I think you did not walk up the "Philosophenweg", the philosophers way, but the "Schlangenweg", snake way. You even showed the sign at 7:18 that says snake way. I walked it quite often so from what you showed I recognise it as that. The Schlangenweg actually leads to the Philosophenweg. It is beautiful and it has viewing points too where you have a wonderful view over the city but the Philosophenweg is where you really have amazing views. There is a garden with palm trees and other exotic plants where you can sit and also have a stunning view over the city. The Philosophenweg is actually pretty even to walk, the only section where its really steep is when you come from the Institute for Physics in Neuenheim, it starts there. There are also some playgrounds for kids on the way too and some signs where you can learn about nature. A little Insider-Info: The most stunning view over Heidelberg and the Neckar-Valley is from the Bismarck-Tower way way up. It is located behind the little garden I mentioned and is not directly on the Philosophenweg but if you want to have the most breath-taking view you should go there even if it's as steep as the beginning of the Philosophenweg. :) However, this of course has nothing to do with the Philosophenweg in general. I just wanted to point out that if you actually went along the Philosophenweg you should have shown these things. But maybe (or I hope you did) you did walk there and just didn't put it in the video! Of course I know you cannot see everything due to time but in that case it is worth it, especially when you point out a highlight of Heidelberg. Fun fact: The "Stift Neuburg" mentioned in the comments is also reachable from the Philosophenweg but that requires a really long walk through the woods. Greetings and best wishes from Heidelberg! ❤ I hope you visit again!

I stayed in the old town very close to the Jesuit church. there are some great food options and restaurants in the city. One i should mention is Weinstube Schnitzelbank for German food. A small charming almost hidden place but very popular also. Their schnitzels are just fantastic. Also The Dubliner for good Irish food. Hopefully will visit again one day.

I have been to the castle. I actually got to see the largest wine barrel. There is a small dance floor on the top of it. In one spot there was a little bridge that you went under. if you look up it is open and hollow. I climbed up inside and on each end there were doors that were locked, I realized that that was a crawl space for soldiers to get from on place to another with out being seen. Me and my friends did some exploring by going over a small chain that said Zutrit Verboten which means entry forbidden. The path led to a cemetary that is on the grounds hidden away from every one. We got caught on our way out by the castle personel and almost got kicked out. We did find out that the big wall with all the windows was actually a way of making attacking armies to think the castle was bigger than it actually was by making the winows smaller as the wall got higher. I just wish i had the money at the time to take a tour. I was in the US army stationed in Darmstadt which is about 40 minutes from there. I was stationed there from 88 to 91, then stayed there after I was released from service for another 4 years.

Hi guys, German looking for Restaurant recommendations here - I got some really good impressions, thank you! I don't want to be "that guy" but you might want to update the Video Timestamps: the last restaurant is called "Hackteufel" - Hack being short for "Hackfleisch", the German term for minced meat and "Teufel" being the German term for devil. This might be helpful for non-natives trying to google it. Have a great day!

Hi Audrey & Sam. I am glad that you found a good Korean restaurant because it is not easy to find one in Germany, which is at least half-way authentic. Most of them serve some kind of Euro-Asian-Trash (some of them actually have "Bibimbap-Soup", "Sweet&Sour Korean Chicken" and "Korean Pizza" on the menu - ughh...). I think that good authentic Korean cuisine is really something that is missing here...

If you want to get closer to the environment and reason for the student jail maybe listen to Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. It reflects perfectly what went on at night with those students and it’s precisely about the students rebellious behavior in medieval times . 😂 Thank you Sam and Audrey, I used to dream in my teenager years coming to the University of Heidelberg, but to study hard, not for the Taberna’s drinking and dancing - to clarify.
