Synopsis
It's the year 1880, and Heidi is an eight-year-old orphan. Her Aunt Dete, who has done her share of looking after her, leaves Heidi unexpectedly with her cold, hermit Grandfather, who lives high in the Alpine Mountains. Heidi's childlike wonder and sweetness melt the old man's heart, and the two become a family. Heidi makes friends with the goats, Peter, the goatherd, and his blind Grandmother, who prays with Heidi and dearly loves the child.
But when an opportunity comes to Dete to make the child a companion to a rich, crippled girl in the city of Frankfurt, she steals her away from the mountain to the Sesseman household. Though the girl, Clara, and the butler, Sebastian, befriend her, Heidi is miserable. She doesn't mean to cause trouble, but several of her antics bring the wrath of the vicious housekeeper, Fraulein Rottenmeier. Heidi longs to be back with the Grandfather and begins to doubt that God hears her prayers, since he has not answered them. When Clara's doctor visits, he sees that Heidi is too frail and malnourished to continue there and tells Clara's father, "the child must go back at once!"
Once reunited with her Grandfather, and all that she loves, she realizes that God has made everything right in His good time. The Grandfather doubts that God will take back the wayward soul, but Heidi has learned to read and now reads him the story of the Prodigal Son. Miracles abound on the mountain, the biggest of which takes place when Clara comes to visit.
