Yeah it's annoying, I read a book about him written by a woman who studied with him for a long time. She said that Heifetz always helped students who had financial issues so that money never got in their way, he even bought them instruments if necessary. He also made sure the violin he played on in his lessons was always of a lesser quality than the violins of the students (so that they can't blame the instrument :P). Now if THAT isn't the mark of an amazing teacher and human being that what is?

Contrary to some commenters, I don't feel that Mr. Heifetz was trying to impose his interpretation on this student. First off, he wanted the tempo to be established during the theme, so that the following variations make sense, so you feel the 2/4 phrasing in 3/4 time. Then he encourages the student to take some chances, up the A or G string for example, while not losing the melody. Then in the second minor variation, with the open A pedal point, he suggests a way of making this long variation more interesting, increasing intensity with 8ths, triplets, then 16ths. This is NOT the way JH recorded or performed this piece, but demonstrated the process of finding one's own way by experimenting. When studying with a master, or guru, one must do everything they say to get anything out of it. Plenty of time to pick and choose later on. (The petite brunette sitting on the right is my old teacher, the beautiful and talented Carol Sindell. I was blessed to have had her as my first teacher, a student of Gingold and Heifetz.)

This is brilliant. Heifetz was an intense teacher here and that is surely what these students wanted, and despite the comments here I think the student picked up the instruction quickly, which is a credit to him. The intensity of the dynamic here captures the spirit of the instrument perfectly. We play because we are willing to struggle for beauty rather than sit around and wait for someone else to give it to us. Thank you for a wonderful glimpse into Heifetz!

When you're at the level to take a masterclass you are not looking to be coddled, you're not a beginner or a child, you're looking to be the best you can be in a very competitive space, Heifetz is in fact very mild here, I've seen some teachers be downright abusive in masterclasses, sadly the work place with a conductor might be a nightmare compared to a rough masterclass, if they can't handle it here they could breakdown when a whole orchestra is waiting on them and the conductor is unimpressed.

No compromise with accuracy. The note should be neither too high nor too low, but impeccably at the right height, not nearly. It seems that the pupil is tired of seeking this accuracy and is ready to leave it there, without seeking perfection. At least that's what I think Heifetz means. I also took it to imply -- I may be Heifetz, and this masterclass may be being recorded, but you are the violinist here are you must maintain your own standards -- even if it requires taking further time to tune. This is a pearl about how and why Heifetz's version of the Chaconne carries and is different from many other players- he's digging for the melody 100% -there's so many ways to find it, it's not about the fingering for most of the piece, it's all where and when you bow and what notes you carry for the melody -he found it because he could play it 50 different ways. The roma who play this and don't know how to read music got this part of it too -every time they play it different, but always it's got the melodies and harmonies recognizable throughout. Exactly. Brilliant.

Heifetz is just making him play the Chaconne the way he plays it. The whole point of condensing all of the great parts of music into one piece of fifteen minutes is so that you put all your energies into playing every single note and passage to make it mean something. That's all that you can do. Never mind technical things. Bach wrote it when his life was fucked and his wife had just died. That's the point. And further more, that's pretty much the point of why we listen to music.

violinoamore What do you mean by simple primitive dance? Since when dance is primitive? Since when dance is not an artform that can express feelings, magnificence, depth, or all the other things? And please, do not say things like: "he understands it as a simple primitive dance". Heifetz spent his all live studying music, he got to a level were very few people can get and I am pretty sure his understing of music is very deep and profound. Maybe he understands that both as a dance and as many other things, but he choose to explain in a way where his students could understand what he was trying to explain. I do not know you, so I do not want to be judgemental, but I do not feel like you are an authority in the field.
