@@debbieandmarc I can believe that about Clint Walker. I saw his daughter interviewed years ago, and I was very impressed by her! She was not only physically very beautiful, she was extremely humble and polite with no interest in show business. She said that her father had bought her a plane because she had always been interested in flying and had given her flying lessons from a young age. This was before the airlines would hire women as pilots. She said very humbly that she hoped one day they would hire women and that if they did, she hoped she would be one of them. There was no anger and no threats of a lawsuit as there would be today, just quiet humility. I'm guessing she works for an airline today. I was so impressed by her, I thought what a wonderful father he must have been.

@@DataWatch. It doesn't surprise me that there are people who do not know who Audie Murphy was. I teach at the college level, and you would not believe what the average college student today does NOT know. Early on, I learned when I walk into a classroom never to assume that the students know anything unless the subject I'm teaching happens to be directly related to their major. Even when this is the case, though, they rarely know general information outside their major since people in their teens, twenties, and thirties rarely read anymore. They are too busy playing on their phones and (with males anyway) playing video games. You would think I was making it up if I told you some of the questions I have been asked. So it doesn't surprise me that there would be people who do not know who Audie Murphy was. Reading what this amazing hero did during World War II is almost incomprehensible to me. As I posted earlier, he should have been given two Medals of Honor. It always annoys me to hear an athlete referred to as a hero. What has any athlete ever done that is remotely equivalent to what Audie Murphy did? I cannot imagine the degree of pride this man's parents must have felt about their son!

It's amazing how Hollywood is always able "average out" the heights of actors so there isn't a big contrast between them playing in the same movie. A result not by accident, but probably from the work of many skilled behind-the-camera people.

Leading men who were short often stood on boxes when with a tall leading lady, or the woman stood in holes or walked in trenches. Sometimes when a couple is walking straight away from the camera, you aren't seeing the leading man with the woman, but a stand-in. This was also done with good guys and bad guys.
@jamesaritchie1 Жыл бұрын
@@DataWatch. Read my reply above. With only a couple of exceptions, leading men HAD to appear taller than the leading lady, or every other woman, and had to be as tall as the bad guy, except when the smaller leading man was supposed to defeat a much bigger man. Leading men often stood on boxes, or leading women stood in holes or walked n trenches. Often, when full body shots were want, the leading man would have "his" back turned, and the viewer would actually be seeing a stand-in. This is rare today, but it is still done on occasion.

I was there with a group of Republicans protesting the rally in Connecticut. Everybody, both Republican and Democrat, was whispering about how incredibly short she is. She was wearing six inch heels and a tall top hat in an attempt to appear tall. When she was in a movie with John Travolta who is over 6 feet tall, she had to stand on boxes next to him. This was too fun. I am 63. When I was a teenager in the 70's, one of my big Hollywood crushes was Yul Brenner (my other big crush was Cary Gary. Yep I was the weirdo). It was kinda disappointing to find out I was taller than he was. I did get to see him on stage in 'The King and I'. That was awesome! I was, and still am, taller than a lot of the 'big' stars. I am only 5'10". I don't think that's considered super tall for a woman today, but it was when I growing up.

The average height for a woman in the U.S. is still only around 5'5". You, dear statuesque lady, are still in the upper echelon of female height. I had a friend of similar height to you and I constantly had to tell her to stand straight, because she was a shy girl who didn't want to stand out. The funny thing is that I am extremely short, and would be blinded by the sun if standing at the wrong angle and time to look at her.

I am 62 and also 5ft 10". I used to be 5ft 11" but had a knee op in 2009 and lost an inch in height. I was painfully shy as a teenager, and hated standing out in a crowd. I loved it in my twenties though, and have had some gorgeous hunks as boyfriends over the years. All my favourite actors though, are shorter than me. My all-time favourite actor is James Dean. He was 5ft 8" (not 5ft 7") as told in this video. One of his girlfriends was Elizabeth 'Dizzy' Sheridan - and she was 5ft 10", but she said he made her feel very feminin and it felt to her, like he was taller than her. He had long legs and she used to borrow his jeans!! An ex with whom I lived with for 8 years, was 6ft 1 & a half", and I used to borrow his jeans!! On the whole, I love being tall, but sometimes I'd just like to be petite. I've always been slim, and did a bit of modelling in my 40's.

1 height they got wrong, however; Orson Welles was 6'4", not 6'. As for George Kennedy, I remember he said once that his size helped get him some of his earliest acting-gigs, by playing bad guys on "Gunsmoke." I never knew for sure how tall Gregory Peck was, but I know his hands were *_huge._* I saw his handprints in cement at Grauman's Theater in Hollywood once & from their size, he probably could've picked up a watermelon with one hand...

Actors were much shorter in the early to mid-50s. You were okay at 5'8" back then. 5'9" was even better. 5'9" seemed to be the golden grail of minimum height because Hollywood could make you look taller than 5'9". Everyone assumed Robert Redford was a six-footer when he was only 5'9". After the 50's being 5'11" was terrific because at that height you automatically looked tall in Hollywood films. After 6'0" everything was extra icing. There was diminishing returns it seems after 6'1". You were already tall enough and didn't need to be taller all that much. So, how do we form our idea of how tall someone is, when we have only ever seen them on screen? The most fascinating thing I learned from a "film school" course I took in the 2000s was about eye lines and camera placement. In the classic visual syntax of films or TV you can tell almost immediately by how "our" (the audience, represented by the camera) eyeline lines up with that of a character what part they will play in a scene. If their eyeline is slightly above ours, they will be heroic, if they really look down on us a lot, then they will be dominant or manic, if its about the same then they will be neutral, if we look down on them a little then they will be subservient, if we look down on them more than a little, they are a victim in some sense, or about to be killed. So, if someone is always playing heroes or commanding characters, it's likely that we most often see them on screen with their eyelines slightly above ours and subliminally register that they are a little taller than us. These conventions still apply in many modern productions, but less than they once did - though they are still pretty much universally used in things made for children or young teens - in cartoons and cartoonish live action movies. These visual syntaxes are so very subliminally familiar to everybody that shows like "The Simpsons" make comedy out of subverting and reversing them - but without ever needing to explain the joke. If you watch films or TV made before about 1980 then these eyeline hints are pretty much universal - with very few exceptions. Conventions of camera height placements are one of the main means by which we gain our impression of the height of on-screen people we have never met - and why if we do meet them, we are often surprised by how small or tall they really are.

Lee's smaller than Wayne, Stewart or Strode in Liberty Valance. Not short by any means, but the shortest of the four

I noticed a typo at 9:36. 7’7’’ is not 218 cm, it is 231 cm. 218 cm is apparently 7 ft 2

Yes I forgot to change the cm from the previous guy

My apologies. Written down but not added in the confusion of making. 6’1
@DataWatch.2 жыл бұрын
@Just think he’s credited with 6’2 but many experts gave him lower. Celeb heights have him 6’1 and a quarter but the forum where you can predict yourself has him even lower. I definitely think he’s more 6’1 than 2

You forgot Audie L. Murphy, actor, 5'5", awarded Metal of Honor.

I’ve had that comment already. Think I left out more well known guys than him but thanks.

Wasn't he the most decorated US soldier of the Second World War?
@loboheeler2 жыл бұрын
Yes, Audie Murphy was the most decorated soldier in WW2 being awarded every medal the US Army had. He also was field promoted several times from Private to Lieutenant. He suffered from what is now called PTSD, which is very common with WW2 servicemen who saw combat.
