From baby, to girl, to an adult...this is the same person. In terms of folklore, babies born during an eclipse are thought to have divine powers. The chants/lyrics are based on runes found on bracteate coins, that were made during the "Migration Period" of Europe. Most of the lyrics are difficult to decipher, with the exception of "Landawariar" (heard several times during the song). Per Maria Franz (lead vocalist), Landawariar can be roughly translated into "protector of the land".

The scene at the end with the Musk ox is what most people wonder about. Anoana, born under an eclipse, is a protector of the Land. The Musk ox is one of the few herd animals that will form a protective ring, horns out, to protect the herd and the precious babies in the center. What better totem animal to 'merge' with? For she is an embodiment of the Land, she is one with all that's living in the land. These were the stories of North and Upper Middle Europe during the ancient past. It is our heritage these stories.

In Proto-Germanic, Ano means ancestor or forefather. Ana came to two close contenders; Icelandic and Old High German. In Icelandic, it means to Rush to or to Barge into. Whereas in Old High German, it meant Grandmother. Of course, we can easily conclude Landawariar means Guardian of the Land due to appearing to combine the words Land (Landa) and Warrior (Wariar).

Unless, as one commenter suggested, (and despite the band saying their songs are not a modern religions statement of any kind) the musk ox prepresents the coming of Christianity. Thus young Anoana tentatively welcomes her new Christian friends, but adult Anoana knows the end has come. Paganism and Christianity collide, and it goes about as well as you'd expect. 😢

Don't worry about the translation. The band themselves said only a couple of the words of the song had known meanings. The rest is meter and the meaning they gave it. The music and the visuals tell the story they wanted to tell: spiritual connection between humanity and the animal world. The rest is up to each listener. That's the way art should be.

A short explanation. The lyrics makes no sense per se. The texts are taken from gold coins Brackeacts which was produced between the 4th century AD to 7-8th century AD in Germania and Scandinavia. They where mostly Western Roman gold coins brought home by warriors/traders in their contact with the western Roman Empire. They where flattened and upon them where inscribded runes and norse/germanic iconography. They where used as jewelry or on capes, the text could be a warding spell, a name, a tribute to a god, one found not far from where i live simply said "He was Odins man". On a side note Ano means Mother/Grandmother in proto norse. Hope it helps.
