There was one thing that Heinrich Himmler wanted above all other things, and that was a special badge to prove his athletic ability - such badges were required of SS officers, but due to his physical fitness, obtaining one proved to be a challenge!

Another of those that belied the "Aryan Superman" tropes was SS-Oberst-Gruppenfuhrer Josef "Sepp" Dietrich, who looked more like a barroom brawler than the chiseled features idealized by Nazi propaganda. Moreover, he was rather SHORT, which belied the long-standing requirement that SS recruits be at least, I believe, 180 cm (about 5'11") in height. Then again, Stalin was also a "shorty", though I doubt even Georgy Zhukov would ever call him that, not even behind his back.

hypocrisy and contradictions are a huge part of Nazi ideology like how they thought of Jewish people as weak leeches while also pushing this conspiracy theory that they control the whole world or how Hitler said he loves the German People but constantly sent them to die and didn't surrender even when the war was lost because he didn't care about the Civilians that's why Nazi regimes don't last, because their delusions will end up in collapse.

Since it was a pre-NSDAP era award and recognizes something positive, the Germans took the swastika off the design and resumed awarding it. As a member of the the U.S. Berlin Brigade in the mid-1980s, I tested for and earned the bronze, which is probably buried in a box I haven't opened in a while. Unlike some foreign awards (Schutzenschnur, jump wings), that was one we couldn't wear on our uniforms, but enjoyed the challenge of the test.

@meanfan6963
@meanfan6963 11 ай бұрын
@@largol33t1 No, the Iron Cross does not exist as a current military award. There was a petition a few years back about reintroducing it as a gallantry award, because the Bundeswehr had none to recognize bravery in places like Afghanistan. It was indeed argued that the Iron Cross was a traditional award that predated the nazi period, but ultimately the government wasn’t ready to go that far. Instead, as a compromise, they created a new award, the Ehrenkreuz fur Tapferkeit. This award is very similar to the Iron Cross in the way it is awarded, but the design is different (the medal is gold and based on a different historic Prussian award). AFAIK, it has been awarded around 20 times (half of which posthumously), and I believe 2 were awarded to US special forces members.

The Mark Felton videos are excellent; they provide important context to Nazi Germany and (primarily) the Second World War. It's further important to not create caricatures of the Nazi leaders. I have some grudging respect for all those, such as Himmler and Goering, who joined the NSDAP early, when it would have taken some genuine conviction and courage, rather than later, say, post 1930, when it was just a good career move. Himmler doesn't come out well from this clip, apart from his participation in the Beer Hall Putsch of 1923. By including this in the clip Mark Felton does, as you say, help us to understand him better. The other themes in this video also help us to understand Himmler better.

Trivia: in my opinion the British actor Donald Pleasence played the best movie Himmler. He showed the sinister side of the man in "The Eagle Has Landed."

I think it’s hilarious that Captain America is literally the Ubermensch that Germany talked about, and their ideal man is fighting them.

Reinhard Heydrich was one of the few Nazi leaders who actually looked Aryan, probably was, but we cant accurately judge books by their covers and doing so, grave mistakes.

You can still get the , Deutsches Sportabzeichen ' in current Germany, it looks still similar. There is still a golden, silver and bronce Version. You can get this badge at every age, but of course, in young age the conditions are much harder than for elderly persons.

Thanks Dr. Felton! I'm addicted to your channels. I've always pondered about the top Nazis not looking much like what they were preaching... and managing to get away with it. WWII history never fails to entertain and amaze me. And you bring it to life so well! My "favorite" (being facetious) is Göring... Fat Hermann. 😉

Thank you Dr. Felton for another excellent video. This has made me think: what happened to the medals worn by soldiers who remained in active duty after the end of the war that had a swastika on it? Did they reissue new medals without the broken cross, or were the medals stripped or replaced altogether?
@largol33t1

I've read in Time LIFE books about WW2 that at least the Iron Cross was ordered to be surrendered. The government then gave them a new one with the symbol removed.

As SS-Reichsführer Himmler was able to award himself quite a few awards if he wanted or could of ordered other officers who approved decorations to award him awards just as Göring did which makes me think Himmler actually did not care much for awards

As a Third Reich memorabilia and medal collector i would be keenly interested in knowing more about the whereabouts of Himmler's medals and maybe his other memorabilia too. Helmut Weitze has one set of original Reichsführer-SS collar tabs but anything more than that from Himmler is very seldom seen on the market.
