@gottfriedweymans2082 жыл бұрын

Karl Heinz Flohe: my most favorite German player of all time. He deserved greater recognition for his unique style of play. It is a shame he didn't play in 1974 W.Cup final. You could see his unhappiness (rightly so) in the picture taken with the team, with W.Cup in their hands. Along with Netzer and Overat, I consider him one of the three great German midfield players of all time. R.I.P legend.

@@SirOliverNorwell Thanks for correcting and glad you consider him as highly as I and many others do. I thought his first name would be like Karl Heinz Rummenige, and Karl Heinz Forster.

@@13muller9 I was an avid 1.FC Köln/FC Cologne Fan from childhood (1971) on, Flohe being my favourite player. In those days (60's, 70's, 80's) Cologne was one of the german top club teams before very bad management in the 90's caused a big downfall. Even the best known german Football players of the past (Netzer, Beckenbauer and others) concede that his technical skills were unmatched. Netzer said in an Interview for the 2018 feature film about Heinz Flohe entitled "Der mit dem Ball tanzte" (He who danced with the ball) that he could do things that nobody else in german football back then was capable of. Something about his character: he was very supportive to new team members and refused to be called World Champion because he didn't play in the final against Holland in '74. (There always was some kind of tension between him and coach Helmut Schön).

@@SirOliverNorwell I might be wrong , but I think two factors deprived Flohe to fulfill his true potential: His shyness and his bad luck. I've watched the game against E. Germany in 1974 W. Cup several times. Except Overath and Brend Coleman (his teammates in Cologne), other players are ignoring him, and prefer to pass the ball to other teammates. He didn't have the supreme confidence that Breithner had , and looked intimidated by the presence of 5 Bayern players in the team. Then in 1978 when he was the midfield general, in the game against Italy, he got injured and missed the rest of the W. Cup. In 1978-79 season, he lost his form; if he still was still at his peak, Cologne could have defeated Forest , reach the final and become Champions by beating Malmo. And then his devastating injury that ended his career, and finally his tragic death. I think Tony Schumakher said it right: "Fate hit him hard". May God bless his soul.

@@13muller9 I concur. As to the Matches against Forest: Cologne could have won even without Flohe. I watched the 2nd Leg on KZbin several times. Cologne was the more active team on the whole and forward Dieter Müller had a big scoring chance. Then he had to be replaced due to injury before half-time. In the end Cologne was defeated by that corner kick in minute 65. Flohe and teammate Herbert Neumann were so depressed by that defeat that they both collected a red card in the next league match in Hamburg. Hamburg was playing very rough and kind of unfair, provoking Flohe and his teammate. That incident led to the suspension of both from team training. Flohe was so upset that he left Cologne for 1860 München. As you mentioned in Dec. '79 he was so badly injured that he never really recovered. He suffered complicated calf bone and shinbone fractures which in the end led to his untimely death. Very bad luck, indeed. Are you English? Best wishes
