Drew’s facial expressions are so great, he should create a KZbin channel of him just reacting to random things. 😃 If you haven’t, maybe y’all should look into producing fountain pen friendly greeting cards yourselves. You’ve got some great designers.

They used to have in-house notecards you could purchase in packs of ten, which were also the notecards they used for the hand-written notes. The hand-written notes and notecards to purchase were discontinued around the same time (early 2019?) and there were a few of us who liked purchasing the cards but apparently not enough in sales to keep them going.

I'll take you on, Drew, for that Metro vs. Explorer as a starter pen. The Metro was my starter pen, and I just purchased an Explorer less than a year later. I really love the explorer, and it's nice and light weight for someone who's used to a rollerball or ballpoint pen. With an F nib it writes so effortlessly, it feels like air. So in that way I think it would be a great starter pen. But I think an important aspect of a starter pen is giving a well-rounded FP experience, and I think the weight and sophistication of the Metro do that better. It *feels* so fancy and high quality, and will engender a feeling of "Oh if this cheap-ass pen is so awesome, what else am I missing out there?" Whereas the Explorer feels kinda cheap and hollow in comparison. So I can see someone enjoying writing with it, but not feel like they got enough *experience* for their dollar to want to explore more into FPs. QED. ;-)
@angelaking96193 жыл бұрын
I personally agree! The metro was my first fountain pen too, and while I haven't tried the Explorer, I have tried some other cheap light pens like the Herbin demonstrator and the Recife Traveler. They wrote just fine, but the similarities to gel pens made them much less special to me. For some, that'll be what they need, but I'm glad I started with the Metro. It helped me understand how beautiful and pleasurable fountain pens could be, at an amazing accessible price.

I think notebook covers are a great idea (I own a few). Sometimes all the other features - pockets, pen loops, buttons and snaps - make it hard to just write in a journal or notebook Greeting cards are a little restrictive, but NOTE cards would be great!!!! Hope you decide in those directions.....

Just bought the classic black and gold sailor 1911 king of pen, medium nib. I've been looking at reviews for it for months and I've been saving up for it for the past year with budgeting. It'll be delivered in 2-4 days (assuming the supply chain doesn't get hindered by the pandemic)! Writing is a part of my day job and some of my hobbies. So I get to use this hobby almost every day. I'd been writing mostly on my laptop all throughout university and later college, but then I had a sort of renaissance with going back to writing by hand for the past two years after my education. Thanks to GPC, writing has been so much more of a delight than it usually is! Thanks, Brian, Drew, and the GPC team. I hope the new year is a little less hectic in the supply chain!

I've had a Pilot Explorer for a long time, and it's a great pen. But... But if I were starting over knowing what I know about Pilot pens now and The Metropolitan, the Explorer, and one you unfortunately don't carry, I would have to go with the Pilot Cavalier. I just love the better (to and for me) heft and weight of the all-metal Cavalier over the Explorer. And the slim lines appeal to me more than the more traditional cigar-shaped Metropolitan. Very happy to see the Preppy featured. I use one every day, and I second how bulletproof the cartridge is. It's dead simple to refill with a needle and syringe, and holds a ton of ink! I over-tightened when I turned my Preppies into eyedroppers, and had a slow leak of ink every time I used it and couldn't figure out why my fingers kept getting stained when I saw the tiniest hairline fractures on the body that screws onto the threads. Do not over-tighten! But if you have no desire to turn it into an eyedropper, the Preppy is A Solid Pen. Unless you put shimmering ink in it. I regret that one.

In Drew's reference to manual transmissions, "three on the tree" is where the gear shift is on the steering wheel column instead of on the floor. 1st gear is all the way down and to you. 2nd gear is halfway up, away from you, and up again. 3rd gear is straight below 2nd gear. Reverse is straight above 1st gear.

By far the best starter fountain pen is a disposable. See if you like the writing experience before even dealing with filling mechanisms. And they are even cheaper. I got started with a Copic disposable and quickly got hooked.
@jamesaritchie13 жыл бұрын
The trouble with disposable pens is that they are almost always disposed of, adding more plastic to the already plastic-bloated landfills. To me, a big part of why fountain pens are so good is that they aren't disposable. The world has more than enough disposable plastic in it already. The last thing we need is more, especially from fountain pens that are supposed to last a lifetime, or even much longer.

I first drove a 1972 Ford pickup with a 3 on the tree, and my first car out of college was a 1962 Rambler American 220 (bare bones. Flathead 196 CID engine, no fuse box ever installed, no radio, nothing. Even the standard 3 on the tree shifter. Drew do NOT tone down the facial expressions! That's what makes it better to watch on you tube vs losten to a podcast. You are an amazing nugget (probably not using that right...)

The Conklin Omniflex nib is meant to be a reverse writer. While I've never had much luck with the flex part, I to like to flip it over for a very EF line.
@Seefood733 жыл бұрын
I agree the reverse omniflex is good. Flexing on the right side up is depending on ink with a lot of surface tension, it will just give boring railroads with most inks.
@angelaking96193 жыл бұрын
Great tip! I don’t find the nib that flexy either, but I like using it with drier inks.
@Seefood733 жыл бұрын
@@angelaking9619 it's as flexy as any modern semi-flex Steel nib, such as FPR or Noodler's.

Hi Guys. Enjoy listening to you Pencasts. My question is rather specific but here goes. Do you know if the Pineider Arco models with the Quill nib pullout (compression fit) or screw out type? I'd like to replace mine but don't want to damage this beautiful pen. The why is because I don't prefer the softer nibs. Thanks.

Thanks guys. You two are so entertaining. It was a difficult week this past week, I had a defibrillator implanted in me. And sitting down for a enjoyable hour of Goulet Pencast felt like catching up with a couple of friends. If I had to ask, is there a pen whose size works well with bad hands and or fingers? It seems as if I’m moving into that stage of life. Wishing you all a good week and prayers of dealing with this crazy world. Thanks again…Dave

Thanks for joining us, Dave! We'll keep doing our things, so you just keep on following the doctor's order and we'll all continue to do our thing! :) Best of luck to you - and we hope that this next week is 100% better! - Drew

Q: How much effort and expense would you go to to restore some 2 Esterbrooks sac fountain pens from the late 60s? How safe and reliable will they be once restored and will they hold enough ink to be enjoyable ?
@bryanmarsh98863 жыл бұрын
My heirloom pens, following the same rules: Namiki Emperor and Yard-o-Led Viceroy Grand. Honorable mention: Waterman 46 (with papers, box and sterling snake clip). Don't worry Drew, when you grow up the beard thing becomes easier. I had a similar soup day this week, although every day here in the PNW is wet and chilly, my wife homemade french onion soup.

Drew: "Three on the tree" = three speed manual transmission with the shifter on the steering column; a very popular configuration in the 1960's (but never seen in manual transmission cars today)
@gualganus3 жыл бұрын
Actually, appearing in the '50's.
@florencefortyseven3 жыл бұрын
So the six on the floor is a six-speed transmission in the more conventional place, next to the driver's seat?
@danielklopp70073 жыл бұрын
@@florencefortyseven : yes, "six-on-the-floor" refers to a 6 speed manual transmission with the shift lever mounted on the floor between the two front seats. "Three-on-the-tree" was popular when most manual transmission cars had 3 speed transmissions and bench seats (in the front - so not as easy to put the shift lever on the floor).

I stopped chasing releases when I wrote with the Pilot E95S. I have both colors and I feel I've found my pen. I also have a couple Pilot capless and a couple vanishing points. They all write perfectly smooth. Drew's attraction to brown has increased my interest in Custom 823 Amber. Now dying for this Amber beauty. Does it also have a super wonderful smooth 14k nib? Will I love the Vac Fill or will it annoy me? So far nothing from Pilot has annoyed me. Big collector of all Pilot pens. [FYI I did find the mini Plumix (Pluminix) and I bought one right before you mentioned it on a PenCast. They are cute but even posted they are super tiny but use a standard Pilot cartridge].

Ok, so have to add this.. 2nd week with reversed nibs, have you tried a parker 180? I have one from the 80s they were designed to be flipped, mine is a B or XF depending on the side you write with. Don't think that they make them anymore, but I could be wrong, also a very slender pen, so not everyone's taste.

For the Lamy 2000, nail polish striping tape is very narrow -- you may be able to make a ring around the pen right in the ring above the clip. It would be visible, but very subtle. Variety packs are economical on Amazon, or you could just buy like... a roll of silver and mark one of them.
