Husqvarna Viking Opal 690 31 Sewing on Buttons

Help ! I have tried this so many times and I must be doing something wrong . I broke 2 buttons and stuck my finger once. can you tell me how to get that X off of the presser foot picture ? I got one button sewn on but thats all it will do. the needle gets stuck in the botton instead of the little holes.
