I hate to break your "rice bowl", but the second in our series of auteur directors is none other than David "F-ing" Mamet. We watch his 2001 film, "Heist". I'll give you three guesses what it's about. We also discuss the plumbing skills of Dame Judi Dench.
In Seen It, we discuss a man named Sullivan, a man named Truman and a man named Gatsby.
All film footage is used in accordance with fair use and US copyright law. All music in the show is used with full permission of the composer.
Thanks for all the great comments. Keep em coming! If you watch one of the movies we discuss, let us know what you thought of it.
Welcome To The Basement" is a show about watching, discussing and having fun with movies. Matt choses the movie and Craig doesn't know what it is until the cameras start rolling, so none of the discussion or riffing is planned ahead of time.
Movie announced on facebook before every new episode. Get the movie and follow along. We do discuss the entire movie, including the ending, so if you want to avoid spoilers, watch the movie first.

Simon Birch if you haven't seen it. It's a movie about growing up for a child that's unacceptable by his family and most of the world and when I watched it as a kid it really spoke to me and made me cry. Still does every time to this day and is one of my top five movies.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World. Maybe the most fun I've had watching a movie in my whole life. Edgar Wright gleefully directs, Michael Cera finds the first role since Juno that he's actually right for, and oh man the music! AH! Love it.

If you haven't seen it, I would definitely recommend that you guys watch Hayao Miyazaki's masterpiece Princess Mononoke. It has all the things that make Miyazaki's films fantastic turned up to 1000: gorgeous animation, fantastic music, a world that you can easily lose yourself in, and more. This movie definitely changed my idea of how amazing an animated film could be.

One of my favorite documentaries of all time: "The Atomic Cafe." The film chronicles the end of WWII, moving into the invention of the atomic bomb and the Nuclear Age. However, it does so entirely through old news reels, PSAs and pieces of propaganda, painting a fascinating picture of how that period in history was displayed (and skewed) to the American public. It's fantastically edited, and unlike any other documentary I've seen. DEFINITELY worth a watch.

Matt, Craig, I suggest the animated movie, Batman: Mask of Phantasm. This movie for me, was a childhood favorite and solidify my Batman fandom. Watching it now as an adult, it showed me how cartoons have been dumbed down for kids these days and I never realized as a child how much adult themes and dark this movie was. As a child, it was a very long Batman episode, as an adult, I see it as a gothic mystery and a benchmark for animated movies and even comic book films. I personally think this movie is the strongest movie in the entire Batman franchise, and this includes the Nolan films. I do not know if you are a comic book fan or a Batman fan, but this movie is an experience I feel everyone should take part in. Thank you and I can't wait to see you in the Basement.

There are three films I'd like to see you guys tackle: 1. "Phantom of the Paradise" (1974)- I love this movie because you can't put it in one single category. It's a mix of horror, fantasy, music, satire, and more, and I'd like to see your guys' take on it. 2. "Outlander" (2008)- If there was a "historical sci-fi" category of movies, this movie would fit very squarely in it. Should have gotten more attention than it did. Features a performance by "America's Caveman" Ron Perlman. 3. "Rockula" (1990)- It's a cheesy vampire musical comedy made in the late 80's that features Tony Basil, Thomas Dolby and Bo Diddley. If you are fortunate enough to track down a copy (the film was never officially released on DVD, only VHS and laserdisc), you will not be disappointed.

I really want you to see True Stories. It's one of my favorite sleepers (something that never got a lot of attention). It's delightfully quirky. The casting, in my oppinion is spot on, especially John Goodman's character. Plus it's a Talking Heads movie. David Burns directed the movie, and his band provided the soundtrack.

My suggestion for your 50th is a little movie from 1982 called "Hysterical". As kids me and my best friend rented this because we wanted a comedy and the box said "Hysterical" and we thought, "How can we go wrong if the movie is named 'Hysterical'!?". I don't know how many times we watched it laughing our asses off. Showed it to another friend and he loved it as well. Since then I've met literally no one who has heard of the film, let alone seen it, and me and my 2 friends still quote that movie regularly to this day.

I recommend The Fountain Head (1949). It's not that the movie itself was a revelation in cinema, but the themes covered in the film as well as the heavily dramatized conversation would lend themselves well to the show's banter and analysis. I certainly didn't have any trouble siting through the movie, and I feel that covering the film has good educational potential as well as entertainment potential.

Disney's 1954 classic, 20000 Leagues Under the Sea My favorite 50s movie and a great depiction of the wonderful novel. I can never watch this movie critically because it is such a huge part of my childhood but hopefully if you guys feature it on the show we can enjoy it and critique it together! The 2010 Documentary, The People vs George Lucas This one is a rather odd option but it is a must see for any fan of the amazing films that Mr. Lucas has made and a hater of the not so good ones he made in the 2000s! Its a wonderful film with relatable fan stories and great comedy moments, its a must for any movie fan. On a side note the amounts of "seen it" from these comments will be immense :)

My pick for the 50th episode movie would be "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension". It's a movie about a modern day renaissance man who, in between performing brain surgery and going on tour with his band, has to save the world from aliens. It can be funny and doesn't always try to explain itself to the viewer. It has a fun cast with Peter Weller, John Lithgow, Jeff Goldblum, and Christopher Lloyd. Worth a watch even if you don't do it on the show.

My recommendations for your 50th episode. Kopps (2003) Directed by Josef Fares. A wonderful film about small town Swedish cops that are at risk of losing their jobs. Filled with natural feeling humour and a genuine small town feel. It's been one of my favourite films for a long time and I show it to everyone that I become friends with. The Field (1990) Directed by Jim Sheridan. This was voted one of the greatest Irish films of all time. It's a tragedy about the old Ireland versus the new, with underlining subjects of outsiders, prejudices, and the good and bad of progress. It was filmed in a town nearby myself in County Galway. It's a classic and invokes emotion, I think that it would a perfect film to analyse and look deep into. Rubber (2010) Directed by Quentin Dupieux. This French film is a strange one. It is about a tyre who comes to life and has telepathic powers, just suddenly. He goes around and does tyre stuff, while spectators watch the events on a hill with binoculars. The less you know about this film, the more you will enjoy it. I went to a cinema in the United States to see this film, the crowd was filled with awkward unanimous laugher, sudden lone laughter, and the occasional moments of dead silence. I enjoyed this film for it's humour that it just put out there. It was one of the most unique experiences in my life. It was filmed in Angola for a barren waste land feeling and all the actors have California-American accents, and it had a budget of USD$500,000 and only made USD$100,000 internationally. I hope you give this one a shot. If you have seen a few of them, I'd like to know your thoughts.

Hello Matt and Craig. If you haven't seen it, I would highly recommend 'REPO! The Genetic Opera'. It is very 'Rocky Horror' in feel, but I was absolutely amazed by it. The cast is fantastic (Alexa Vega, Paul Sorvino, Anthony Stewart Head, Sarah Brightman, Paris Hilton (who it turns out can sing well), to name but a few), and I was really pleasantly surprised by it. I think it is one you will enjoy. :-) Best wishes, Charlotte.

I amost forgot to give my nominations! Alright, here we go. 1. John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China. Kurt Russel's finest hour and the best bad movie ever made. In fact, it's so good it's almost not bad at all. 2. If Ronia the Robber's Daughter (based on Astrid Lindgren's book) were available with english subtitles, that would have been my second choise. Everyone should see it. 3. Once again, i'll recommend Flickering Lights (Blinkende Lygter) with Mads Mikkelsen. 4. Lastly, if you haven't seen it, you should check out Peter Jackson's mockumentary Forgotten Silver, about a long forgotten, insanely inventive filmmaker from the early 1900s.

Tokyo Godfathers is a Japanese animated film about three homeless people who try and reunite an abandoned baby with their mother

Hey guys, huge fan since at least 2010. I really wanted to voice my opinion for Welcome to the Basement. For my suggestion, I had to go with someone who likes Michael Shannon even more than you do. Director Jeff Nichols. Earlier in the season, you mentioned that Take Shelter was a great movie and I agree completely. Jeff Nichols has only made three movies and all three feature Mr.Shannon. Since you've already seen Take Shelter, I would recommend his directorial debut "Shotgun Stories." If you've already seen that as well, his newest movie "Mud" is equally amazing. It would mean a lot to me if you even read this. Thanks guys!

I nominate Tex from 1982. Based on a novel by S.E. Hinton, Tex is a story about two brothers living in Oklahoma and covers themes of growing up, loyalty, staying and going. It's a forgotten by the general and a crying shame. I personally think that it is one of the 100 best American Films of all time. It's just as good if not better then it's follow ups The Outsiders, Rumble Fish, and is way better than That was Then This is Now. Roger Ebert gave it 4 stairs. Well deserved.

Gonna go with the shotgun approach here: 1. The Thin Man - great dialogue, comedy still holds up. 2. Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? - the best movie Hitchcock didn't make. 3. The Last Picture Show - talent grenade if there ever was one. 4. The Verdict - Paul Newman makes me forget I'm watching Paul Newman. 5. My suggestion is Alejandro Jodorowsky's The Holy Mountain. One of the most upsetting endings and just all around a weird experience to watch with friends. And I gotta love Jodorowsky's directing style, as he proclaims that “Most directors make films with their eyes; I make films with my testicles."

You could try looking at George Pal's 1955 film "Conquest of Space". I won't say it's perfect and it's a little bit dated from a sociological perspective, but it is an interesting experience as an early attempt to realistically envision the future of space travel. It also has some pretty good special effects.

I just finished a film class, and in that class we'd seen a lot of good movies. There were also some bad experiences, but one good movie that stands out was a French movie called "A Man Escaped". I was interested in the step-by-step process by which the protagonist is shown to devise his escape, and the atmosphere was very good on suspense, especially since we're restricted to one character's range of knowledge and it's made clear that one wrong move could cost everything.

Have you seen William Friedkin's 1977 Existential Wages of Fear remake "Sorcerer"? A complete flop at the time and a lost classic, I recently saw the remastered version at the movie's first official UK cinema showing, and it truly is Friedkin's masterwork. He recorded a special introduction to the film for the showing and his enthusiasm for the movie was enough to sell it even before the title credits started.

One of the movies I've had a chance to revisit is the 1966 Japanese film 'The Face of Another'. It's so subtle and ahead of its time that you don't realise it's science fiction. 'The Woman in The Dunes' is another haunting film in which the main theme of the movie is escape from society, quite reflective of Japanese culture now with significantly higher rates of suicide among adults. I'd also really like you guys to watch and discuss more animated feature films and teen movies on your show. Thanks!

Star Chaser : The Legend Of Orin. It's an animated Star Wars knock off, amazing story and crazy art. Scared the poop out of me as a kid for reasons you will see when you watch this.

Also you could watch 'Grabbers'. An Irish monster movie where the only way they can fight the monster is to get really really drunk.

The Music Lovers (1970) - Noted mad man Ken Russell's take on the life of Russian composer Peter Tchaikovsky. Mission to Mars (2000) - Gary Sinise and Tim Robbins go to the Red Planet, do not find candy bars. Find Me Guilty (2006) - I haven't seen it, but Vin Diesel with a full head of hair in a Sidney Lumet movie has to be worth talking about.

My suggestions would be: -Battle Royale because it's just awesome and gorey and in someways ridiculous. - Howl's Moving Castle because its just a stunning film and the story is great as well. -Any Norman Wisdom film because he is the king of slapstick comedy as well as being incredibly endearing and sweet. -maybe a Tim Burton film, like BeetleJuice or Ed Wood, purely because no one does creepiness like Burton. Congrats on the 50th guys, hope there will be more to come :)

Please pick "Funny Games" (the original German film or the American shot for shot remake by the same director). Everyone that has seen it saw it differently. It's a movie that you could talk about for ages and it's the ultimate meta film. Even if you don't like it, it will make you think and I think it deserves to be talked about way more than people currently talk about it.

I suggest Hellzapoppin' (1941). It's a film about a film about a show about a film about a show. Great songs, great script and crams in so many games with the format to create madcap fun that never gets old -- it's crazy but don't panic, it's more of a Putney Swope Pacifier. Stars Ole Olsen, Chic Johnson. Martha Raye and best of all Misha Auer.

You gotta watch Sleepwalkers (1992). My guilty pleasure, a horror comedy in the vein of Evil Dead, and it's written by legendary Stephen King.

would you consider watching American Ballet Theater's 1969 production of "Giselle" starring Carla Fracci? It's not just a recording of a performance if thats what your thinking, it was clearly meant to be the MOVIE of a ballet (like Maurice Sendak's Nutcracker).

Dear Matt please watch A Boy and His Dog for your 50th episode. Starring a 24 year old Don Johnson, story by Harlan Ellison, and Directed by L.Q. Jones, yes that L.Q. Jones. This post apocalyptic gem transcends it's genre cutting to the quick of societies family constructs and asking; what relationships are to be truly treasured? My favorite cult classic of all time. I promise you'll at least love the trailer. A Boy and His Dog Trailer #1 (1975) Don Johnson

You could try Pusher (1996). One of Mads Mikkelsens first movies and one of my favorites. If you haven't seen it, I would also like to see what you have to say about The Perfect Host (2010), just because I think it might make for a funny episode.

I would have to suggest The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance from 1962. This movie has quickly become my all time favorite and inspired my interest in movies with James Stewart. The movie is a western classic and the story will keep you captivated. The movie has a great cast ( James Stewart, John Wayne, Lee Marvin, and Vera Miles) and the characters have deep relationships with each other. The movie does include some good comedic scenes and a nice twist ( although as you watch the movie, the twist can be easily predicted). The movie also mixes action, romance, and suspense. By the end of the movie, you will understand how Ransom Stoddard feels about his title, how dreams died when Liberty was killed, and how fast a friendship could end because of a single event. "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend" I would also suggest 1776 if you have not seen it. It may not be the best musical ever created but the movie will probably make you smile. The movie uses comedy to lighten the process of writing and adopting the Declaration of Independence. But you are still reminded of the struggle for independence and what was at stake during the Revolution. Towards the end of the movie you are faced with many tense moments which make you wonder what will happen even though you know what will happen next. The songs are catchy and you might begin to sing along. 1776 would have to be one of my favorite musicals.

Hey Matt and Craig, I'd love it if you would watch Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai. I had to watch and research it for one for my film classes and would love to hear your guys' take on it! If you've already seen it then how about Thief (1981), Silent Running (1972), or What's Up, Tiger Lily? (1966)

I'd still love to see you guys do a Kurosawa film (even if you're not doing it on your Auteurs run). The first two that obviously come to mind would be either "Seven Samurai" (my favorite) or "Ran" (his favorite and final film). But like every other post I've done for the past several months, I'd highly recommend "Kagemusha," his first color film, and boy does he use it to his fullest. But not just a pretty picture, "Kagemusha" is also an interesting look at honor and duty. Seriously, if you guys haven't seen ANY of these three films, you guys should.

I would recommend "Kurt Cobain About A Son" directed by AJ Schnack because of it's visceral imagery and it's power to change perceptions of what you think you know about life.
