Chaotic ending but it was one of the most helpful videos on Hekate that I have seen. You're covering some major resources and doing a massive deed for those who come across this. It is appreciated to have a source that is a "one stop" explanation of the evolution of Hekate. - Thank you!

I’ve already watched this about 3 times-I just recently got my copy of the PGM delivered and what a TREASURE TROVE it is, I have spent hours just pouring through it. I’ve always been so intimidated by doing research/looking up primary sources because it’s such an uphill trudge when you’re just starting out. Your videos have really encouraged me to start doing research because of how approachable and knowledgeable they are. So thank you! Hekate is actually what brought me to Hellenism and I always craved more deeper information than just what Wicca/blogs/etc had to offer. I feel your “neutrality “ to the ~*victorians*~ (derogatory). Can’t wait for part 3! 🖤

I'm so happy you spoke a good bit about syncretism. It's hard to find polytheists that speak about it, without throwing shade at it. I generally don't see an issue with equating other religions gods with one's own, but I have found that many seem to frown upon the practice. I personally have a small frog statue of the Egyptian Heqet sitting in front of my idol of Hekate, to me its a representation of Hekate Phroune (she-toad/frog).

Thank you! And yes, I find many people talk about syncretic topics while also throwing shade on syncretism 🤔 it's quite odd. I wanted to cover it from a sympathetic standpoint because so much of human history is cultural exchange!

Loving your videos. I don't know if you saw this in your research but Aphrodite is connected to Inanna Ishtar through Astarte, which was how she came to Sparta. With that syncretism, War and Political Power fell under her until she was adopted by the larger Hellenistic pantheon - there's a whole thing written on Zeus essentially telling Aphrodite that she didn't have a place in war. If I can find a decent link, I'll send it.

I'm only part way through this, so if you cover that later in the video or the next, I'll delete this.

This puts new perspective on a book I read a couple months ago, Liber Khthonia, which purported to be about Hekate. I had hated it because a lot of the information mentioned had reeked of falsehoods and claimed things which I had never heard about Her. I still think most of his conclusions on Her were,,,, not accurate, and the book still has plenty wrong with it, but this is helping me understand where some of his thoughts had come from.

Sophia actually appears in the Bible, in Proverbs 1-8. As a female personification of wisdom, she is likely inspired by the Semitic goddess of wisdom Anath, who was also a war goddess and likely heavily influenced the Greek view of Athena.

She represents synchronicity for me. The number 3 is literally everything combined. She appears in all myths and all religions, as either an angel or a demon. She provides intuition, her leading the dead along a path to deisred places isnt her literally leading, its guidance. Shes associated with magic and witchcraft because witchcraft uses symbols to utilize the power of the mind and soul, its a way to synchornize the through the subconscious with the highest self. Shes a union of opposites in various ways. A godess of light and dark, youth and age, good and evil, Sex and virginity, birth and death. She is often depicted with a sword or dagger, which notoriously symbolizes mind, intelligence, and the planet mars and pluto. Already she is synchronized with venus and mars, femininity and masculinity. Hermes is similar and thought to be her consort. She is protection and offensive attack, she is the accuser, the accused, and the advocate. She is lucifer and she is sophia. She appears in gnosticism, Christianity, egyptian myth, kinda like Prometheus.

χαῖρε, the Blithe! just when i thought i was out of searching for good faithful content on hellenismos in this messy baseless witchtoky tube, you pulled me back in :) interestingly, around the same time as yours, i too, embarked on my Hekatian journey, just to understand the meaning behind a cult symbol in a tv series called Yellowjackets. as a preliminary result, i wrote a three-part essay, proposing my hypothesis that the symbol is tied to Hekate Trimorphis. gradually, i saw a strange internal attraction towards her in my life, and i didn't even know there's such a thing as hellenismos at the time. anyway, i know for a fact that all these things that i learned along the way, are nothing but a prelude to understand this fascinating complex goddess. i'm looking forward to checking out the rest of your essays. btw, you have what i call a 'Hekate gaze' :) also, just in case if one day by accident and out of boredom you wanted to see what kinda nonsense i've written, here they are in chronological order: metawanderings.blogspot.com/2022/02/on-semiotics-of-yellowjackets.html metawanderings.blogspot.com/2022/02/yellowjackets-symbol-complete-picture.html metawanderings.blogspot.com/2022/03/on-virgin-sacrifice-cannibalism-sacred.html

Great talk, thanks for all the hard work. Another facet "may" be that Hekate was a version of the constellation Virgo. You can see Virgo with one sheaf of wheat as Demeter, with none as Persephone and if you draw the outline with two torches you have Hecate. Virgo rises upright, traverses the night sky supine, and sets head first so that my inform the triple goddess (the ancients were VERY observational). From your video I see it is very complicated untangling the myth and legend but it is a pretty sure thing that other myths and legends were given added power by being abled to be depicted in the stars and often how the constellation was drawn/visualized changed to fit each story. These star myths are ancient so all the confusion is probably multiple cultures merging their particular myths and traditions of how to depict Virgo and the variations on the myths attached to that constellation. I have no idea how the Moon fits in, the seasons make sense. Cheers

so much synchretism! it´s almost offensive to people who like "pure things". it just makes me wonder whether those cults were folk religions or priest religions. because if they were priests it explains why they were so okay with synchretism (no imagination equals bad sequels, sometimes better triquels). but if they were witches i don´t like it.. why would you accept someone else´s practices or "damons" as your own, it makes little sense to me (maybe for hereditary witches and even then you should also find other guides or you just become a copy of your predecessor). what is even the purpose of a carbon copy witch.. to me that´s the opposite of true magical practice (that should be based in exploration). maybe it´s priests faking it as witches, see how i made it topical, i see you, i see you :)
@FeltheBlithe2 жыл бұрын
Syncretism was actually most common amongst the common folk! Priests and state religions tended to avoid it and even condemn it. It tends to be understood as a natural progression of cultural exchange (Many classical gods were once syncretized, example: Paian and Apollo were thought to be different but they became one)
@joutavainen29202 жыл бұрын
i guess you could say that too, i can see that side on the streets (for example people choosing personal gain or conveniance over any deeper beliefs). but i can also see them resisting suspicious or foreign things (sometimes more so than so called educated people). some of them even refuse to say foreign words, or even the literary version of their own language (it´s insulting to them, not real, they like to keep it real, you know). so i think it´s both, it was both (people don´t really change).
@joutavainen29202 жыл бұрын
or actually i don´t think most "regular folks" even have deeper beliefs (i certainly don´t). it´s more like a feeling of right and wrong that comes from your family, gut and personality, or when outside also to some extent from the surrounding culture (don´t do that or this happens). i don´t really see need there for an additional "religion" or other philosophy.. you could even say that it could fuck you up (a lot of those crazy religious people seem to be regular folks who have lost their natural ways). it should be ok to just be you, that´s what the animals do anyway (no religions whatsoever, just avoid everyone and you´ll be fine, except in may of course, mating you know).
@joutavainen29202 жыл бұрын
or if there is a religion for animals it´s most definately sun / season worship, living with the cycles (very good in that). some rebellious factions also seem to mate in the autumn, but let´s not discuss them, who knows what their motivations are.. maybe it´s the longer carrying times (with birth in the spring). just like some seem to prefer the night over the day (might be more into the moon, who knows). i have to take it back, they do have a religion but just not the kind that tries to make you into something else (more of the natural kind). one of the big splits right there.. there is no way that you can belong to both sides of that equasion (because opposites, and opposites don´t attract). why i dislike new age so much because it seems they try to play all sides.. "whatever man, it´s the universe man", fuck you stoner head :)

You’re getting close, but there is a key element you are missing … You have to understand that Hecate is a living goddess and a living titan at the same time. She’s not a historical being that can be researched… she’s imminent…. she’s all around you, around us, within us, and also co-present in the underworld and in the celestial heavens… You cannot learn about her or understand her fully, ever (nor any of the Gods- but especially her). One can only experience her, and only experientially. Only then can one hope to BEGIN to understand who and what She (or rather, what ‘it’ is). The Answer to your question about who and what she is, lies in her epithets, in her symbols, In her images, but also, in all of her manifestations throughout all the different periods of time in history. Yes, historically she’s not the goddess of witches, but she is now as well as being the goddess of everything that she was named before that. There is a common denominator to everything here spoken… therein lies the key to Her Mystery. Bear in mind, Even when you discover that Key, does one’s understanding of her as the ‘mystery of mysteries’ develop even further. It’s maddening… But it is also liberating. I hope that helps 🌹
