"How is it possible to perceive this potential, the beautiful irrealis mood, in the endless space of a few moments?" It's a divisive novel. I loved it. It's extraordinary. It's almost made up for Praiseworthy not being Booker listed. I was really touched by the characters. The snapshots of prose reveal something, like a photograph does, held in a moment in time. I want it to win. It's made-up for the YA feel of Wild Houses.

This is the second book from the Booker Long List that I did not finish. Although there was beautiful writing, it was static and I was not engaged in the hearts and struggles of the characters. I also stopped about 1/4 of the way into THE SAFEKEEP, for many of the same reasons: I was not touched by the characters and did not want to spend any more time with them. MY FRIENDS continues to have my vote. I couldn't stop caring about the destinies of the trio of friends.

I just finished Held this week and while I can’t say that I loved it, I did like it a lot. The cover copy really misrepresents the book and I think creates expectations that Michael’s never intended.

The older I get the less patient I am with books that don't catch me on the first 50 pages. But good that we all like different books.

It’s a book that doesn’t give it to you on a plate. In fact you may have to bring your own plate. It will however hold your hand. Feel the gaps. Breathe. Give it space. Be held. You will get out of it what it let’s you put in. Stunning book.

I agree with you: too much litirary, too much lirical and difficult to connect. I prefer James, My friends by Hisham Matar and Wandering stars
