For years, New Zealand has benefitted from a reputation of having low levels of corruption compared to most other countries. But, a new report from the Helen Clark Foundation says the country is at risk of complacency, and major changes are needed to rules around lobbying, political donations, and official information.
Join Jack Tame and the Q+A team and find the answers to the questions that matter. Made with the support of NZ on Air.

Ensuring people with money do not get a bigger voice and ensuring less corruption does help democracy. We have a free market but you still need rules to insure people are not being exploited.

why do media call bribery donations? What are job offers other than donations? Bribery happens outside, such as paying for advertising and media masking lobbying as "news". All of which should be stopped. Excellent and important report- thank you.

agree. you gotta wonder if wealthy were required to donate to a pool of funds that was distributed between party's (let's say based on the seats they currently hold, or potential seats if they're a startup), would they even donate at all.

All donations shld go through parliamentary services who would then document everything and then pass money over to the party That would mean it was impossible to hide any donations of any level Well that how I reckon shld be done

What Jack meant by that opening statement is "You are a co-founder of an anti-gun lobby group". The irony drips off them both.

The massive elephant in the room with regards to corruption in NZ, and one we just don’t seem to talk about, is vote buying by politicians. “Vote for me and I’ll force your employer to pay you more.” “Vote for me and I’ll legislate for a living wage.” “Vote for my party and I will use taxpayer money to fund your group.” “Vote for my party and I will give your community tens of millions of taxpayer dollars for your cultural celebrations - just be sure to tell your people the money came from me.” “Vote for my party and we’ll massively raise the minimum wage i.e. your wage.” As all of these practices are Labour’s bread and butter it’s of no surprise to me that the Helen Clark Foundation was silent on them in their recent report.
@gb10110

A labour party on the side of the people? Preposterous. It is their bread and butter. Their voter base literally is the working class and if they didn't appeal to that it would be National vs National. Something we just don't seem to talk about, is vote buying by politicians. "Vote for my party and we will reintroduce interest deductibility." "Vote for my party and we will reduce the brightline test" "Vote for my party and we will scrap the Auckland regional fuel tax" "Vote for my party and we will deliver $9 billion in tax cuts"
