I have always been influenced by the truth of an image. Mary Ellen Mark's work captured a truth in the moment of capture that always spoke to me. This is why her work inspired me to be more authentic in most of my images with developing a relationship with what is in front of the lens to capture the subject's true self better. SO glad to have found this interview. Thank you Mark!

This whole series is fantastic and I hope you will create more. The background information on the artist and images is immensely valuable. As a photographer, it is inspiring to get these insights. One more thing...in the world of photography where men have dominated, I'd like to ask that you please include more female photographers in your upcoming episodes. Thank you!

This was a wonderful episode. I've been in a bit of a rut lately only photographing clients and have needed a bit of a push to just strap on a 50mm and just wander about and interact with whomever on the street. Videos like this help light that fire for me to go make beautiful pictures for myself and not for a deadline or a critical eye. Just for passion. I hope there are many others out there that just got the same goosebumps. Have a wonderful time making images everyone. :)

It seems to me that sadness sells...that's just sad. Is my job as a photographer to capture people being sad? That just makes me sad. How sad? Only people smiling and enjoying "the process" are happy because it pays so much. Does Photography ever take the sadness away without exploiting it? I feel like when I see a famous photo is I want to know what dirty secret here is being told that life is full of sadness. I could almost sorta imagine this very voyuer like quality it takes to shoot the photos of people that critics seem to be wowed by...I suppose that's how the life of good subjects are. And I agree this is nihilistic and if there is happiness present, it seems forced...when is genuine happiness ever commercial?

I notice that you've added music when you're showing Mary Ellen Mark's photos. It's as if they couldn't hold up to pure silence. I noticed, too, that many of Mary Ellen Mark's and Helena Christensen's photos were taken in foreign countries of people in unusual costumes and dress. I think that background music and unusual costumes give a photograph an advantage that an everyday photograph doesn't usually get.

Some of the below comments complained of the music in the video. I didn't notice it because I was so focused on what was being presented by the two photographers. Not condemning those who thought otherwise, but it just didn't distract from my enjoyment of the video. I have no complaints. This was very inspiring and encouraging. Appreciate you sharing this with us.

I guess from my perspective, I really wonder what these classic photographers from the past think of modern day KZbin photographers and how the modern mentality of post processing photos has affected the “here and now” creativity experienced by the photographer on the ground when pictures need to be captured as perfect as possible in camera. Please do a video on this photography topic. I personally would like to know what these great film photographers from the past say. Thanks.
