Helen - pony is to do with size of the equine - if they’re under 14.2hh (hands) they’re a pony, if they’re over 14.2hh, they’re a horse. Foals are babies :) I am an equine vet so trust me 😂

So the dofference between a horse and a pony is the height - a pony is 14 hands and under, a horse is over 14h, so a shetland pony is the correct term HOWEVER - Icelandic Horses are generally on the pony size scale, but are called Icelandic Horses not ponies! I never thought I'd ever have to recruit that info from my brain 😂

Not sure if it's a fact you want to know or not, but, a pony and horse are only differentiated by their height. Foal is age, but a pony is only a horse when reaches a certain height, so if they never reach that height, always a pony. x
