I have just listened to an interview with Polina Osetinskaya, and now this. I love them both as musicians and as individuals. Yet they are very different, and their musical sensibility is different. That is the beauty of music. A Russian Woman and a French Woman, and both bring to their music the personality of their culture and there are differences, and whilst I listen to each one they are my favourites as I listen. The riches of our age are sometimes lost in the snags ad problems but is it not marvelous that listening with in three hours to a concert in St. Petersburg, and one in Dresden then Hélène in France one can enjoy three great musicians and be in a position to be amazed and delighted? Musically this is a rich time to live.

It is not often that one can listen to a superior artist--Helene Grimaud in this instance--play magnificently & talk so intelligently and brightly about her art. And after all that one can't even take one's eyes away from her face! Surely they broke the mold after Ms. Grimaud arrived on the scene. In answer to your question, who is the conductor and which is the orchestra is: it is the venerable Claudio Abbado, now in his eighties; and he is conducting the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, which he formed himself in 2003. What I find moving, is that his superb Italian musician, who has conducted some of the greatest orchestras in the world, including the Berlin Phil, now finishes his long career with his own fine orchestra in one of the loveliest locations on earth. How very fitting.

Abbado shows more heart for his italian blood and his efforts to get perfection. About Helene Grimaud, she is not only beautiful, she is an outstanding pianist.

@billybloggins : Abbado was born on June 26, 1933, he'll be 78 soon. I do hope he is totally recovered from stomach cancer. I have attended his performances in New York, London, Berlin and Salzburg. Lucerne will be my next destination

I am continually amazed at the indifference in opinions. Helene Grimaude is and has proven her absolute genius in her interpretations. GA4N should consider and read her book. I did recognize her cycle of unexplained exuberation. totally misdiagnosed for the most part, but finally recognised as genius misguided. Helene has ultimately found herself and has proven to all that her place is to be enjoyed ,credentialled and not discerned by those unworthy.

What a pity, after all of her regard and affection for Abbado, they've had a falling out over which cadenza she was to play in a concerto. As if that should be his choice, and not hers.

I.D. on this - Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto 2, Claudio Abbado conducting, and I believe the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra. Without the sound, they look like a wheatfield in a violent storm, but they sound absolutely beautiful. Abbado seems to encourage emotion in his musicians.

@@moshezarviv1252 Son arrogance se lit dans la communication qu'elle entretient à propos de son propre personnage : femme aux loups, qui se fait photographier en beaux hôtels, et qui ne ferait de la musique qu'un simple hobby parmi d'autres ... prétentieuse, snob, ego surdimensionné. Le problème est que tout cela se lit dans son jeu pianistique : minable. Inspiration molle, technique moyenne, superficialité, convenance, et platitude. Et en plus, elle se permet de jouer les plus belles pièces du répertoire ... Quelle insolence de petite péronnelle !
