For a few days, like a few years ago, I ended up back on Germany's only North Sea island, Heligoland. Measured from the east coast of the main island to the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein near Sankt Peter-Ording, Helgoland is 48.5 km away from the mainland. The municipality of Heligoland has 1284 inhabitants (December 31, 2021). The archipelago of Helgoland and Düne has been part of German national territory since 1890 and is integrated into the district of Pinneberg (Schleswig-Holstein) as an independent municipality of Heligoland. Special regulations apply to both islands: The municipality is part of the German economic area, but is neither part of the customs area of ​​the Union nor are German excise duties levied.
