Yes I do fly R22's, and R44's. I'm a CFII with endorsements to instruct in both. Your statement that the helicopter shouldn't get into a low rotor situation because it has a governor is misleading and dangerous. The governor fine tunes the throttle input to keep the engine rpm at the appropriate level to keep the rotor rpm in the green. At high DA you can hit "full throttle" and the governor can do nothing to help.This finite amount of power is why it is challenging to fly high, hot and heavy.

Actually, what you see here, from the pilot's response to the low-RPM horn was absolutely correct: lower pitch, then increase throttle, failing which look for a landing spot. From experience, I have little doubt that the road would have saved the helicopter, but may have struck a racer. Given the circumstances, most pilots' reactions (mine included) would have been much the same. The more pertinent question is what led to the loss of power, and the NTSB concluded it was due to density altitude.
@blondblue19493 жыл бұрын
Yes. The pilot did do exactly what should have been done when he found himself there, however, he should have never found himself there; a hot day, too heavy, too slow, and too low, and no real place to land at that point. He accommodated the camera man instead of the aircraft and situation.
@penguinista2 жыл бұрын
@@blondblue1949 I agree completely. He was way behind the aircraft by that point. Thank goodness he realized quickly and didn't try for a desperate save that made things worse. At the 31 sec mark you can see the flag waving stong as he is almost head on into the wind for a low aproach. Then his mistake was to turn almost 180 downwind and it settled into his own vortex downwash creating a loss of lift. Rookie mistake I assume.

The pilot was one of my instructors a good few years back. He was flying heavy with bad wind direction. He did a good job making sure he brought it down without hurting anyone. The owner was happy it was insured for more than it was worth. Sometimes you just need to tell the camera guys inside you just can't get the shot instead of forcing it and chancing a incident like this.
@waynewilliams192210 жыл бұрын
chopperbubba he was a very good instructor. He had several thousand hours but made the mistake of listening to the camera guys wanting to be lower. The pilot should always do what allows for safety. The wind is a reason but not an excuse.any pilot can tell you people who don't know about flying will always push you to do unsafe things just because they have a lack of knowledge.

chopperbubba I agree 100%. I had a photo flight in a 22 where the camera guy wanted me to fly slow with a tail wind. I declined and described why. Incorrect. If he was in ground effect he would have had plenty of lift to get out of the situation. It looks more to be a settling with power issues, or as most people call it vortex ring state. Basically you settle into your own vortex and lose lift. The only cure is airspeed to get in clean air, but most start sinking and try to pull up on the collective which only makes the problem worse.
