After an investigation by the FAA and NTSB, it was concluded that the pilot was flying over the race when suddenly he heard an announcer on a loud speaker who was so atrocious that the pilot lost the will to live. After unsuccessfully dying in the subsequent crash, he ran down the hill to kill the announcer with his bare hands.

That is what I thought too. He went back around into where his prop wash was still rolling. Thought he had time to scoot sideways too, but might have been scared of going over the people to get altitude by going downhill. If so, kudos for crashing in a field rather than risking people to save a machine. Always have to plan for the worst, especially in a helicopter, especially with a reciprocating engine, especially in the mountains, and most especially for a CAMERA! They are killers.

From NTSB: "The pilot had just performed a left-pedal turn and the helicopter was facing upslope to the mountain. The low rotor warning sounded and the pilot lowered the collective and increased throttle. The pilot stated that the engine did not respond so he continued to lower the collective and looked for a place to land." If he got the horn, he certainly had low rotor RPM and you can bet it was from the High Density altitude, high weight and trying OGE

Yes I do fly R22's, and R44's. I'm a CFII with endorsements to instruct in both. Your statement that the helicopter shouldn't get into a low rotor situation because it has a governor is misleading and dangerous. The governor fine tunes the throttle input to keep the engine rpm at the appropriate level to keep the rotor rpm in the green. At high DA you can hit "full throttle" and the governor can do nothing to help.This finite amount of power is why it is challenging to fly high, hot and heavy.

Actually, what you see here, from the pilot's response to the low-RPM horn was absolutely correct: lower pitch, then increase throttle, failing which look for a landing spot. From experience, I have little doubt that the road would have saved the helicopter, but may have struck a racer. Given the circumstances, most pilots' reactions (mine included) would have been much the same. The more pertinent question is what led to the loss of power, and the NTSB concluded it was due to density altitude.
@blondblue1949
@blondblue1949 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. The pilot did do exactly what should have been done when he found himself there, however, he should have never found himself there; a hot day, too heavy, too slow, and too low, and no real place to land at that point. He accommodated the camera man instead of the aircraft and situation.
@penguinista
@penguinista 2 жыл бұрын
@@blondblue1949 I agree completely. He was way behind the aircraft by that point. Thank goodness he realized quickly and didn't try for a desperate save that made things worse. I was wondering if he might have flown too many turbines in the weeks leading up to the crash. Looked like he wasn't paying much attention to available power.

At the 31 sec mark you can see the flag waving stong as he is almost head on into the wind for a low aproach. Then his mistake was to turn almost 180 downwind and it settled into his own vortex downwash creating a loss of lift. Rookie mistake I assume.

The pilot was one of my instructors a good few years back. He was flying heavy with bad wind direction. He did a good job making sure he brought it down without hurting anyone. The owner was happy it was insured for more than it was worth. Sometimes you just need to tell the camera guys inside you just can't get the shot instead of forcing it and chancing a incident like this.
@waynewilliams1922
@waynewilliams1922 10 жыл бұрын
chopperbubba he was a very good instructor. He had several thousand hours but made the mistake of listening to the camera guys wanting to be lower. The pilot should always do what allows for safety. The wind is a reason but not an excuse.any pilot can tell you people who don't know about flying will always push you to do unsafe things just because they have a lack of knowledge.

chopperbubba I agree 100%. I had a photo flight in a 22 where the camera guy wanted me to fly slow with a tail wind. I declined and described why. I'm not saying he didn't mess up just saying that he was a good pilot making a lapse in judgment. I talked to him after and he understands the mistake. And you are right people seem like they want to walk into the tail rotor.

Those things have governors and you shouldn't be getting into a low rotor RPM situation. Most likely, he was just too heavy, too high when it was too hot. If you fly helicopters like I do, it's called high density altitude. From the NTSB: The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: The pilot’s decision to operate the helicopter at a high density altitude near terrain, which resulted in a settling with power condition

It's a good thing those Robinson copters are disposable, like a bic lighter.

Incorrect. If he was in ground effect he would have had plenty of lift to get out of the situation. It looks more to be a settling with power issues, or as most people call it vortex ring state. Basically you settle into your own vortex and lose lift. The only cure is airspeed to get in clean air, but most start sinking and try to pull up on the collective which only makes the problem worse.

So what's the elevation of the mountain their? Helicopter probably flying too slow for the altitude.

I watched it a few times and I agree it was low rotor rpm. I didn't realize how high Golden, was but yeah, if you are out of ground hover you will pull the shit out of the power until those blades just slow down.

??? High altitude air is thinner. Less drag on the rotors. How does that slow them down?

Silly to fly a chopper a 1/4 mile from windy saddle. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKDSi3-Cf8alpsk Crash site at 28:46 and Windy Saddle at 29:12 Paraglider pilots take off from Windy saddle. I have never seen a chopper fly that low over that terrain. Power lines are another issue up there. I already have a bad opinion of Robinson helicopters. This bird looked like a hand pushed it down. Not surprised, any helicopter would have had issues.

The helicopter obviously heard the announcer and tried to murder/suicide the situation. This was filmed at Colorado extreme douchebag championships. The winner gets 2 cases of protein bars and a life sized THC gummy bear.

@89hondaguysi If he got into LTE in an OGE hover all he had to do was go forward on the cyclic. There was no yawing back and forth. Looked like he settled, but it's hard to tell where the wind was coming from (if any).

I would agree with this more. However, wouldn't attempting to gain forward airspeed by nudging the cyclic forward help in some situations?

Good gosh!! This one guy acts like nothing happened after the helicopter crashed and didn't even check on the pilot or passengers to see if they were okay. He was just smiling from ear to ear, saying: "Oh my gosh! It's gonna blow!" When the helicopter didn't even catch fire! That's insane!

The cause of the accident is what is referred to as a "Annoyance Death Vortex". Once you get caught in it you can't escape.
