Helicopter Pilot Lesson Hour 4 (Robinson R22) With Full Start-up Procedure

Hour number 4 in the Robinson R22. What a great day to be flying over Sussex on a lovely clear day. I did Some more level flying, turns, climbing and descending. with more hovering at the end. i actually found it harder in this lesson to keep the nose pointed in the right direction while hovering, the high winds helped keep the nose pointing the right way because the body acts a a weather vain so it wants to point into the wind.
Flying starts at about 10mins after startup.

Loved the video, taking lessons myself on the R22. So was looking for a good video on pre-start and start-up to get as much information as I can on all the procedures, but when engine is started you can hardly hear anything that is said between the instructor and student, such a shame!

Yeah it's very noisy. You have to buy a special adapter apparently to get the radio feed which I don't have. I hope to start again soon. Money was getting tight so it had to stop unfortunately

Thanks for sharing your experience! One of my next life goals is to get a PPL(H). Hope to in about 1.5 to 2 years time. I'm in Ireland but looks like there are an extremely limited number of schools here. Just bought a sailing yacht and got PADI rescue diver certified (2 life goals complete) so money is a bit tight in the short term. :) Any tips for people starting out? Such as books/equipment to buy in advance or is it just a case of lean by doing?

Did about 8 hours so far. Well worth doing. Cost me £360 per hour.

@@AndysAdventures89 Yes flying is not cheap, FIxed wing is cheaper but half the fun. Were you able to hover at 8hours and which school was this?

We used to do hovering practice at the airfield after each flight. I was managing up to 1 minute hovering. I fly with advanced helicopters based at Shoreham airfield West Sussex.
