You are doing something right when the videos you make can be enjoyed or appreciated by laypeople, students and professionals alike. Thank you. You brought back some old memories. This pilot gave me my 1st lesson in the helicopter R22. I was set in a restaurant talking to a friend about flying a helicopter the next day and a news Flash came on that helicopter crashed in the cornfield. One of the students crashed. Sex or 8 weeks later I flew in a new R22. I took one lassen with crop duster in R22. He recommended a different pilot to get the skills that I need it. Vietnam Helicopter instructor pilot. One of the greatest things I've done in my life. Head on a swivel.

My takeoff/landing position is between 2 rows of hangars, i have a "spot" designated for guidance and clearance issues. After watching this I have decided to paint the boxed area red for better visibility. I will also check to see if there is adequate rotor clearance should the hangar door be left open inadvertently. Always willing to change my environment especially for Safety reason's.

We should learn from every accident/incident what to do, or not to do. Aviation, Automotive, Rail, Shipping/Marine, etc. As a retired helicopter pilot, I've done many types of jobs requiring helicopter specific work obviously, and the one major, basic item is slow down, read that checklist, do not be intimidated by anyone to get in a hurry. Know your own personal limits as well as the aircraft's limits. Y'all have a great and happy New Year 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🦜

Me too, Kenny. I always do a pre-take-off hover check, ... during which I also check and adjust my collective friction to just enough to keep the helicopter from sinking hands off in ground effect, check my EGT, oil pressure, oil temp, all electronics, then do three quarter turns. After the third quarter turn I check collective friction again hands off. Only then do I make a go decision. My helipad is elevated four inches with a roll up ramp for the ground handling wheels. The pad is 12'x14'. There is a safety zone marked around the pad with orange survey stakes that designates tail rotor clearance from all positions above the pad. Beyond that there's double additional safety zone. On my youtube channel there's a recent post flight walk around video.

I am a retired Anesthesiologist. Sometimes we anesthetize very sick or physically traumatized people. Most of the time the patients are pretty healthy or extremely healthy. Before I began any anesthetic induction, I would have interviewed the patient, read their medical history and reviewed all of their recent labs and other testing. I would literally think to myself before doing anything, “How is this patient going to try to die on me?” Fortunately, it never happened to me in any elective procedure.

Yup. No power check, and madness pulling into an OGE hover in such close proximity to a structure. I learned to fly in Johannesburg, where a 10,000' DA is nothing on a hot summers day. You learned very quickly about power limitations, especially in piston helicopters. The early R22's I flew only had a very crude collective / throttle correlator! Glad everyone walked away from this one.

Spacial Awareness. Check your surroundings before you even climb in. And for as much distraction there was with passengers, go even slower with procedures. If they get antsy, just have your passenger read the preflight checklist to you as you check them off, that usually makes them feel involved. Then say "Thanks man! That writing is so small I couldn't read it anyways" 🤣😁 Start the flight out with a good laugh and you've broke the ice, good to go!

After seeing several of these incidents, complacent attitudes seem to be ever so apparent. In the early 90's at Wings Field in N West Philadelphia a pilot casually took off knowing a geese flock was less than approximately 50 yards above...and needless to say about 5 seconds after liftoff sucked 10 or so into the rotor vacuum instantly slamming back down the aircraft. Thankfully the aircraft most likely only suffered minor damage considering another 20 ft of elevation certainly would've destroyed the entire aircraft. Figuring those birds weight is approximately 10 lbs, that's 200+ lbs thrown into the rotor draft. I don't remember the type of aircraft however it wasn't of the Bell class, a bit smaller

A better idea would be to measure the full rotor blade length, of the longest rotor, n measure from the hangar's door protruding edge, away from, n then paint your red stripe. This way you would have more than half a rotor blade's length away from the hangar with hangar door open. Also, never takeoff in the direction of buildings. Best practice is to hover taxi to the runway, n use the runway to get your ETL, Effective Translational Lift. And yes, he totally neglected his hover check... Careless mistake

Violation = Termination of ENTIRE Flight crew (NJSP PIC, NJSP Co-Pilot, Flight Nurse, Flight Paramedic), so we ALL become invested in the safety culture of our organization. All ramp video is reviewed daily by an NJSP Captain assigned as a Safety Officer Our entire crew has been involved in EVERY safety aspect ......... after the horrendous loss of life in the HEMS community in 2008. We are one of the few Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) programs in the World that flies IFR with ATC control 24/7/365, and have had ZERO fatalities, crashes, injuries or major incidents in NJSP history dating back to our Aviation Bureau start in 1969.
