I have had three engine failures in fixed wing GA flying - All three after significant maintenance, and returned to flight. One was a brand new Cessna 172XP, on the delivery flight... Brand new is a GREAT time to watch for maintenance screw ups. No matter fixed or rotor

In the automotive world, "new" means, "Never Ever Worked". We're always suspect of anything new under the hood when there's a problem. Just the way it is these days.

I agree. I am always more concerned (or hyper aware maybe a better term) in those few hours after maintenance and that is not limited to the engine.

In my 50+ years of flying, I have encountered 3 engine failures, resulting in 2 off-airport successful landing. A good pilot is always looking for a place to set whatever aircraft/helicopter you are flying. It's called "Judicious Suspicion" as I heard someone call it last week.

I guess as you are here to tell the tale, the third engine failure was also successful! :)

By the way, I've only had 1 instructor "surprise" me by rolling the throttle off during a hover and hover taxi. Both times, I had a proper reaction and landed smoothly. After that flight, I thanked him profusely for doing that as it demonstrated that my training had sunk in and I've developed that "muscle memory" that you want to have as a helicopter pilot.
