Helios 44m 58mm F2 is so much more than just BOKEH SWIRL. It's a fantastic all around lens that really should be the ONE Vintage Lens everybody should own.
Also, I mistakenly pronounce "Jena" wrong in this video. The correct way to say it sounds like "Yenna" in English.

Terrific review, Mark, as always. Loved that you reference the CZ Biotar 58/2 upon which this lens is based. So many reviewers fail to mention that fact. Also, just wanted to add one very cool bonus when shooting this lens on an APS-C camera: with 1.5x crop factor, this lens becomes, in effect, an 85mm, which is ideal for portraiture. Looking forward to trying this out on my A7II using APS-C mode. Could be fun! Anyhow, thanks for your brilliant vintage gear reviews. Keep 'em coming! :D

@@MarkHoltze Hi Mark. One of the biggest problems, for those wanting the 44M-7 (like I did), is the danger of being ripped off. In theory, the -7s are supposed to have the highest resolution, the -6s slightly less, and so on. However, some dubious sellers out there are making fake -7 lens facings and simply replacing the ones on -2 lenses. So, it's a bit of a challenge to find authentic ones these days. But, I managed to, by verifying the key details to look for outlined in this DP Review thread on the subject. Hope this helps, and I hope you and your family stay safe. Peace! www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4089447

One of my favourite lenses - although I have the 44-2. The Bokeh is great but what I really like about it is the colours. It’s one of my favourites for skin tones. Very flattering. I’m often happy with the result from it and many of my portfolio shots were taken with this lens
@MarkHoltze

Skin tones! That one is critical, everything else for me doesn't matter as much. It's amazing the level of work you can get out of these old SLR lenses. Some things age very well, and lenses are definitely one of them. Thanks Nick! Good luck mate

It's one of my favourite lenses. I already have three of them, a 44-2 and two 44-m. The 44-2 is older and has the preset diaphragm system, but they all render beautifully in a very similar way. Using it on a fujifilm aps-c sensor camera it is a great lens for portraits and detail photography. I'm using only vintage lenses, and the soviet ones are always a great shot for their price, and can be a real surprise, each lens has a very recognizable, distinct character. For example I like very much the Jupiter 3, a M39 mount lens for rangefinder cameras, a design based on zeiss sonnar. It's soft with a strong glow when completely open, but just stopped down a bit it's very nice. The Industar lenses are a must too, with the Industar 50-2 being the smallest and more compact zeiss tessar design ever made. It's a weird little lens with a great fun factor. Industar 26 and Industar 61 are also very good lenses, both sharing a Tessar like optical design of 4 lenses in 3 groups, but they are not exact tessar clones, and they can render very interesting shots, I love them both but I have aspecial thing with the 26, being the first soviet lens I bought a long time ago with a russian FED II ragefinder camera.

The Helios 44M is full metal btw :) (i service them for years already and haven't found any plastic in it. The lens is build like a tank and designed for the cold weather in Syberia. the early 44's and 44-2 had the oil on the aperture blades, A lot of people complained about that oil but it actually had a function... well 2... because it was mass-produced they used oil to stick the aperture blades together so they can quickly assemble those babies. BUT they also used oil to "fight" the -40 degrees weather in Syberia, the oil could not freeze the apertures blades together so there was not way to destroy them. condense and other weather conditions could build of water inside the lens and the cold could freeze the blades together. so 2 flies in 1 hit. easy and quick assembly and q fuction for their weather. I got a bunch of 44m's including the 44M2, 44M3 44M4 etc... too (yes i got the biggest russian lens collection of the benelux) But I love the Helios 44's and 44-2's the most since some actually are equipped 13 aperture blades for the best smooth BOKEH! ballz and are more swirly than the 44M's. The Red N (T*) with extreme blue/purple coating are the most insane! sharp and also shitton of swirls... Ugh i love those russian and zeiss lenses. I love collecting and shooting with them... I actually sold all my modern lenses because i don't use them anymore. They all look and render the same... perfectly digital optical corrected and no character... while those vintage lenses and (lomography art lenses) are mad crazy with characters because these were calculated with hand and not perfect. oh btw the Lomography lenses are from KMZ / Zenit too :) and the Lomography 58 2 Bokeh Control is actually a modified Helios 44-2. Anyways again awesome video I just gonna sub!

@MarkHoltze 4 жыл бұрын
Dude, your info is GOLDEN!!! THANK YOU! Could you do a series on these Russian lenses? I should just use you as a source! FULL credit of course :). HELIOS! FULL METAL JACKET...I for some reason thought the aperture dial was plastic and I googled it and some sources said the 44m had some plastic components. Funny, I just sold my 16-35 F4 L zoom, sold my 24-105 F4 before that. Never ever use my Sony 16-35 and the only modern lens I use is my talking head lens Canon 24mm 1.4. I shoot ALL my b-roll with my vintage, it's all I ever want to shoot with myself and i'm not done collecting lol.

If people have plastic parts in the 44M's it's probably modified for Nikon to reach infinity. BUT, some metal (aluminium) parts were not fully anodized inside of the lens, so it looks like plastic because it has that blueish tint to it.

@@MarkHoltze As you are on a mirrorless body, Jupiter-8 might be worth checking out... That's 50mm f/2. I've only tried it a bit on film with an old russian rangefinder, but I think it's kind of special. There is also f/1.5 version Jupiter-3 (I haven't personally tried that), but that might get slightly expensive especially when you consider the sample variations some of these tend to have. BTW. Someone has made reverse front element mods on the Helios 44 too: www.dpreview.com/forums/post/54108339 (I actually bought an helios 44-2 for myself just to make that mod, but I'm still working on cleaning some other parts of it.)

My grand-grandfather had 44-2 and I still shoot with it occasionally :D By the way, Helios 44 actually isn’t the swirliest Helios: 40-2 is even swirlier than that! However, it’s overpriced by Russian standards because it was hyped at some point and it’s generally harder to work with being 85mm f/1.5 spinning machine: it’s a very soft lens, basically it works for portraiture in central composition only.

Manual and auto, I think some cameras you can have aperture priority switched off and on and it's enabled by the M and A. It doesn't do much for digital cameras.
@SupperGammer
@SupperGammer 4 жыл бұрын
@@MarkHoltze No, it actually enables the little pin at the rear of the lens. basically it set to manual, when you turn the aperture ring the blades will close, but when you set it to A, they will only close when the pin is pushed down. this doesnt do anything on digital cameras, because the apeture ring pushes the pin in. It was used back in the day so you could meter the image with apetrue closed( pressing DOF prev.) and compose with blades open and a brighter picture which helped focusing and have the blades close as you take the picture.

Mir-1b is not so good. Tried a few of them. The plain silver Mir-1 (Brussels grand prix) is very good though, but more rare and expensive. I wrote above about Volna-9 (50mm 2.8) which is a great macro and all around lens. Somo of the best Russian 50-s are Helios-77-4 (M42), Volna-1 (Pentax mount) and Helios-81H (Nikon mount). Among the 44-family I prefer Helioss-44-3 (from Minsk factory) but it is a bit harder to adapt despite of being M42 lens.

43 mm is actually the dead normal focal length so 44 is one of the closest other than the pentax 43
@opsdaddy

While that's true, this lens has a 58mm focal length. The 44 in the name is unrelated, sadly.

Been using the helios 44-4 for a few years now, similar by the sounds of it. Back-lit portraits make for dreamy images with beautiful flaring... Its become my "first dance lens" at my friends' weddings!

Greatly appreciate your videos, Mark. It's all the little touches you add (like the Helios history, and music) that make the difference along with great editing. Keep up the great work! I find it interesting that the 44-M model has a regular aperture control, unlike my Helios 42 (1957 year) and Helios 44-2 (1975 year) models. Both of them are clickless and pre-set. One aperture ring is the preset and the other is the clickless one. I can't remember the year the 44-M first came out. I've entered the giveaway, and have a Sony A7ii.

Thanks Ray! Having a lot of fun with these reviews. That is interesting about the aperture control. I wonder why they changed it? Wonder if it was more affordable or functional what motivated the change. Good Luck in the draw mate!

Probably just things changing in the world of lenses and what people found convenient. Why turn two rings when one does the trick? 🙂 I find the preset aperture system a charming old-school method, but it's easier with the One Ring😁 I like mostly setting the preset ring to F/16 so I can do what I want with the clickless ring. I don't mind sometimes using the preset as an f-stop limiter. Pretty cool in a way. Sort of like those lens switches that impose a restriction on focus range.

I was given this lens from a friend of a friend who’s hubby was a photographer. Kept it in my cupboard for several years but then saw a photo with amazing bokeh on Instagram - taken by this lens. I quickly bought an adapter and have had so much fun taking floral shots with the most amazing bokeh. I’m making up for those two years it was stored in my cupboard!

I have the Minolta 50mm f1.7 and now after some time struggling I got the helios 44m. The minolta is very nice because of its colours and bubbly bokeh. But the Helios 44m is on a completly different level! - its sharper, stops down more precisely, the focal length on apsc is perfect =equivalent to 85mm on fullframe. I tried a carl zeiss tessar 50mm f2.8, meyer görlitz domiplan 50mm f2.8, minolta 50mm 1.7 and now the helios 44m. I have to say out of all these lenses I just love the background rendition of the helios - it looks the moost painterly, though its also the sharpest one :0 Ouh and one interesting thing: I compared it also with my sigma 56mm 1.4 - one of the sharpest lenses for sony apsc: Its not quite as sharp, though its already very sharp at the click between f2 and f2.8. At f2.8 the center sharpness for flower photography is excellent!
