The dogs cared more about Lazarus than the rich man...and in their kind nature, licked his sores. Knowing the general nature of a dog, I have always known it is true that we could learn much from their nature...I have heard this parable for years, but it came to life to me through this message...

More tragic than tragic--- beyond tragic. I feel so helpless to know that people I know will be in hell. But try to talk about the cross, and watch them shut you up or watch them get angry.

Now that what " rightly dividing the Word" mean. Also, many say that this is a parable and can not be true. Scripture tell us that God can not lie. If Jesus say there was a man and give that man's name, and that turn out to be false, then that would be a lie. He also used Moses and Abaham's name in this massage. With that said, salvation for this dispensation period is 1Cor. 15:1-4 and Eph 2:8-9 no form of work. We only do work out of love for other and love that was given to us.

this life is useless like Solomon describes in ecclesiastes. we need to tell the gospel so at least some don"t have to experience the pain

Is there a possibility that the wealth he was suggesting was not monetary but their religious status under the Old Covenant. His extreme wealth, his dress, even his undergarments are revealed in the clothing prescribed by God for the high priest. Exodus 28:31-42. Romans 9:4. Reveals the Position the Jews had before God under the Old Covenant. The poor Lazarus or ELiezer (Abraham's servant who also trusted God. (Genesis 24:12-14) Abraham himself was righteous because he trusted in God. Genesis 15:6. The poor man, a gentile, had no position before God under the Old Covenant. Ephesians 2:11-13. The parable is about law represented by the rich man and the Good News about Christ. Luke 16:16. This parable is not about hell. It is all about works versus grace. A drop of water representing the Good News. All the rich man would have needed to do was believe in Christ. All the Pharisees standing before Jesus had to do was trust in Christ. Study the Scriptures! Jesus did not die to send people into eternal torment. He died so that those who trust in him would have eternal life. Those who do not accept Christ embrace death.

I do not allegorize biblical accounts when we are not given Textual reason to interpret words or phrases symbolically. The account in this passage is not indicated as a parable in any way, thus I interpret it literally-as the biblical Author intended.

@@JordanNealRogers Thank you for responding. Is Jesus story of the Good Samaritan a parable? Is the story of the wheat and tares a parable? The story of the wheat and tares is the only story where Jesus himself explains what each element of the story represents. It is the only story that is a real parable? Matthew is saying in 13:34: "In fact, he never spoke to them without using such parables." I think when Jesus tells a story we have an obligation to study its context and decide whether the figures he introduces represent more than a literal story. The story of the rich man and Lazarus understood as symbolic figures clearly teaches what Jesus came to do. He was replacing the Old Covenant with the Good News about himself. His whole ministry started out with the reading from the scroll in Isaiah saying that he was the fulfillment of that prophecy. Jesus spoke only 9 times about hell. The references to hell in Mark and Luke are the same context as Matthew's usage of the term. Jesus refers to himself as the son of man multiple times. He speaks about the kingdom of God and heaven multiple times. Hell is a translation of the word Gehenna which is a direct reference to Hinnom which is a place of destruction. Hell is not mentioned in Revelation. The author of Revelation refers to Hades not Gehenna. If you want a definition of a word you do not go to a book that does not even use the term. Hell is a place of death according to the many Old Testament references to that place. It is a garbage dump and Topheth, a specific place in Hinnom, a place of godlessness where some kings of Judah committed idolatry killing their own sons in the fire. Hell is then a place characterized by godlessness and the destruction of those who are godless. Eternal life is only associated with the presence of the Holy Spirit. We will be transformed in that day, the Holy Spirit is the guarantee of that actually happening. Without the Holy Spirit we remain mortals and we are under God's judgment of death.

Devan, I use the English Standard Version (ESV) for preaching and reading. Its a great translation of the original languages. I use the original languages (Greek and Hebrew) during my study as I prepare to preach.

Amazingly I could have summed up this parables in a lot less time then this minister. The Rich Man Jesus spoke about represents the nation of Israel. Lazarus, means the same name of Eliezer in the Old Testament (Gen. 15:2-4), and Lazarus represents the Gentile nations of the world, that were refused the promise of Abrahams bosom by God. Israel has Moses and the prophets and are not obeying these commands. Lazarus does not have Moses and the prophets as he is Gentiles. The Pharisees, being wealthy from Abrahams bosom and the promise given to Abraham by God, were wealthy, but were proud of their wealth and Jesus told them previous that they were an abomination in God's sight. The Pharisees were indignant toward the Gentiles and looked at them as poor, unclean, filthy, diseased and destitute. Both had to die....but not a literal death but to die to the law. Israel is going to be cut off for a time liken to a death, a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in (Rom. 11:25). The Gentile nation will believe in Christ through faith during this church age, but Israel will not and will suffer under Gentile rule. That is why the Rich Man is begging to Abraham for Lazarus (Gentiles) to do favors for them. Jacob, renamed Israel has 6 sons from his first wife Leah. One of the sons was Judah, of which the Pharisees were from and Judah had 5 brothers. Abraham calls the Rich Man "son" and the Rich Man calls Abraham "father" which means they are related. The Gentiles will be a part of Abrahams promise (bosom) during the church age, and Israel will be cut off until the full number of Gentiles will come into the fold, and so all Israel will be saved once this is accomplished. This is not about heaven and hell but it is a parable to explain what will happen to the nation of Israel and the Gentile nations of the world after the resurrection of Christ.

Thank you for taking the time to watch the sermon. Two things in response to your critique: 1) The purpose of a sermon is not to summarize a passage of Scripture. The purpose of a sermon is to exposit/explain the passage and then make application. 2) In your summary you interpret this passage metaphorically. There are no textual indicators in this passage that justify a metaphoric interpretation such as what you presented. Furthermore, there is no indication in the text that this is a parable, yet your interpretation is based solely on the assumption that this is a parable. Your allegoric interpretation assigned meaning to the passage that are not justified textually. The most faithful and clear way to interpret this passage is literally, just as was done in this sermon.
