The Battle of the Bulge, fought from December 16, 1944, to January 25, 1945, was the last major German offensive on the Western Front during World War II. It took place in the Ardennes region of Belgium and Luxembourg, where German forces launched a surprise attack against the Allies, hoping to split their lines and capture the strategic port of Antwerp. The offensive created a "bulge" in the Allied front lines but was eventually halted by fierce resistance and harsh winter conditions. The Allies, though caught off guard, eventually pushed the Germans back, inflicting heavy casualties. This battle marked a turning point, weakening Germany’s ability to fight on the Western Front and hastening the end of the war in Europe.
