Loved the discussion! There is always so much more I learn after watching you guys. The Budhist concepts you touched on brought light on many things, especially the relevance of the monkey and his actions in the story.

Excellent! It's always better when we can talk about what we read! It helps us too to see each other's views as we work through things

I really, really enjoyed the depth of coverage on the religious aspects - Noah is a gem!! I learned a lot and hearing the breakdown actually makes me very interested in the author as well as this story in particular. Freaking amazing. YES! More! More!!

Oh wow! This was so fascinating. I know we are talking about Buddhist Japan in a different time era, but I’m finding the conversation regarding the social structure and views on suicide interesting considering the manga I just read (Orange) that deals with a group of friends trying to prevent a friend dying by suicide. Although I haven’t seen any Japanese reviews on it, many UK and US readers consider it a controversial message that friends should feel responsible for an individual making that decision. I’m now thinking maybe this is telling of different cultural views on individual decisions and suicide. The manga doesn’t deal with religion though. I’ve been wanting to read Shogun and now I may have to pick up something by Akutagawa sometime. Thank you three!

I haven't seen the conversations that you're referring to but it's true there are very different views on what it meant to the East. I hope you enjoy Akutagawa or Shogun!

Really great discussion. Around the 27 minute mark, talking about eternity and Buddhism is really interesting. I may be wrong, and Noah would know more about this than I, but within the understanding of Buddhism, there is no essence that remains unchanged, but instead of the Western notion of a soul, there is an energy that constantly transforms. This would take out any concept of eternity for a single existence in any form. But anyway, great analysis, as always!
