Hey Brad, I have watched a number of these videos and wondered what the material is that you are using for this type of project. It looks like MDF, but anytime I have tried painting MDF, it takes many coats and expands in unexpected ways. Please share what material you are using if other than MDF, or what your secret is when painting. Thanks

You are correct, it is MDF, and the quality of the product is what makes it better to paint. It seems like "MDF" has sort of become a generic term for fiberboard or pressboard products, when in fact there are various grades of product. I have seen sheets listed as shop grade, premium grade and platinum grade, all under MDF, but all with definite differences in density. I have found in most cases, the lighter color of the sheet, the higher density. And of course, just pick up the sheet and check the weight, a full sheet of 3/4" platinum grade is at least 100 pounds. In the US, search for LDF, MDF and HDF (Low, Medium and High).

Could you post a link to the material you are using please? Would like to see the specs on it. All you can find at the big box stores is the crummy plain MDF.

@@mikekikkert6847 yes that is typically the problem, you have to go to a lumber mart of some sort to find it. Here is one manufacturer in the US that sells Platinum MDF, the other product you can look for is called HDF (high density) www.sierrafp.com/product/ranger-platinum-westfraser-mdf?setcontextlanguagecode=en-ca?disableSSR=true.

A master at work, huge fan Brad, watched many of your videos and my fav is the Porsche sign, if I may ask: How do you get the mdf to look like glass by the time you apply the epoxy? Is it multi layers of epoxy before getting to a final coat? What painting process do the pieces go through? Filler? Primer? Paint? Do you have an Instagram/tiktok acct? Do you sell your signs somewhere online? Curious if the Porsche sign is for sale? Your skills and knowledge are a blessing to the community, looking forward to the next one, thanks Brad!
