8:10 the thing I see EVERYONE doing wrong when using the railgun is quite simple. At the start of the mission, don't select the stratagem that says "railgun", select either the one that says "autocannon" or "quasar cannon"

Hell. The AMR is a genuinely better option now, especially against bots. 2 shot kills damn near everything but an Annihilator tank or Automo-Titan

In my opinion, Safe Mode Railgun should at LEAST match the AMR in terms of damage and penetration. Because then you still have a much slower rate of fire and lower ammunition capacity, as well as a worse scope!

The devs claiming "skill issue" is never a good thing, even if it's true tbh. It just shows some kind of unproffessional side that only some dumbass fromsoft, shower-allergic idiots should have, not the dev of a game that is trying to sell stuff. It gives off a sour taste if it *does* come out that the game had an issue and they told us to stop sucking at the videogame. But hey, at least we'll surely keep the fire buff after the fire damage was fixed, if it's gonna get fixed at all.

what's crazier is the "unchanged leg meta" where 9/10 weapons that used to be able to strip charger leg armor can no longer do so or ricochet so often that attempting to do so is a waste of time. AHGS are literally liars, whether that be due to ignorance from not playing the game or intentional deceptiveness it makes my skin crawl. The "unintentionally omitted patch notes" reworked termanid armor so that many weapons can no longer remove charger leg armor like the grenade launcher or impact grenades.

It's the same thing with the fire damage buffs. Fire damage seems to be lacking according to what some people are saying. Result: Add 50% damage to all fire sources. People are saying it's because they're not host and that only the game host gets DOT damage counted. Result: Impossible. Add an upgrade to stack an additional 25% fire damage!!! We've found out that really, only the host gets DOT privilege. Result: We're looking into fixing this problem, BUT WE'RE NOT FIXING FIRE DAMAGE BECAUSE IT'S NOT A COMPLETE ISSUE YET!!!

The railgun is the worst of all worlds: It doesn't have the anti-tank capability of the quasar cannon, has to be reloaded(and thus has limited ammo), and you have to play a mini-game to fire it properly without fucking yourself. Also, thanks to the premium warbonds, there are multiple solid options for dealing with medium-armor enemies with just your primary, so the railgun doesn't even make sense to waste a stratagem slot on those enemies either.

Railgun does have the same armor pen as the quasar but I agree its stupid that to get to that level of pen u gotta play the stupid minigame and charge it to 90% while the quasar is easier to shoot, u get the pen everytime and u never blow up.

@@Joshsurdy Not to mention, the Quasar also deals more damage. So you have to sit through that charge time only once or twice, not like 3-5 times (depending on the enemy).

When comes to anti-tank ability on a bot mission, Anti-material rifle does the job better and much faster, also at longer range.

Also...it unlocks at Level 20, as if it's meant to be some sort of End Game weapon, when it can't even do at End Game, what the EAT-17 and Recoilless do, at MID GAME. That's the issue with nerfs, if you do it without thinking, it starts to make Zero sense.

Everything else aside, for it to be a precision weapon, the sights are awful. I'd like to see this modifiable or changed no matter the state of the gun.

Railgun should have AMR scope. It’s clearly a precision ranged weapon, yet has one of the worst scopes in the game for precision shots.

I posted a video asking people how they 1 shot bile titans. (this was a while back before the problem was more known) On video, I switched it to unsafe, and then proceded to dump 7 fully charged headshots into the bile titan until it died. The first comment, "Unsafe Mode bro" Fucking unreal the amount of confidence and simultaneous ignorance that goes on in the community.

The high risk, high reward of a fully charged shot isn't present. This is basically the reverse of fire damage - they kept buffing fire damage to compensate for not being a host bug. With Railgun, they nerfed it into the ground because of the PS5 bug. I have a feeling they gave the Quasar to us as as a consolation prize.

the PS5 bug wasn't the major issue. the issue WAS you never had to take it off safe to strip leg armor off a charger, you only needed like 60% charge (unsafe) to one tap hulks and two tap Tanks. The railgun was STUPID fast and stupid good to the point if it still was the way it was, it would STILL be best in slot because it be the best at EVERYTHING! What it needs is better damage against Tanks and turrets. while Armor destruction SHOULDN'T be it's calling (it really shouldn't strip armor off legs) you should be doing way more damage against the weakpoints on Turrets/tank turrets and charger heads. Personally, i think it should 4-5 shot tanks, turrets, and Charger heads at MAX CHARGE. this would make it fit the Risk vs Reward part of this.

Stripping charger leg armor and killing it with follow up shots from primary was actually fun but devs labeled it "brainless" yet somehow shooting them in the face with an EAT or Quasar isn't

The amount of times I have seen people dodge dodge and run towards an EAT 17 or get distance for queso instead of shooting its leg proves the devs have no clue about the term brainless.

@@dannyf1168 One of the devs got on discord and said that the rail gun and shield backpack nerfs happened because the play style was brainless. The CEO of Arrowhead apologized for it on Twitter and the guy was forced to give an apology for it as well. I think you might have been asleep for that whole controversy.

Love how the Railgun before the nerf was considered "brainless" gameplay. Then everyone switched to the Arc Thrower and was even more brainless, yet it didn't immediately get nerfed. It got nerfed/slightly buffed after the Arc crash bug. Now the Railgun is basically not worth running, you're just waiting too long to fire off shots that have any meaningful impact. I think a new buff should make charge time decrease for faster firing rate, and maybe a two stock charge so you don't reload often.

It doesn’t need a charge decrease it’s entire damage profile versus weak points needs to be reworked. Against anything up to devastators/chargers it’s currently ok. Gunships, bile titans, tanks/turrets/mortars, ATAT sub-weapons, command-bases it’s been utterly ruined against despite the devs introducing 1-2 shot unlimited ammo weapons that do better than the railgun ever did at its peak, slower refire sure but with 4-6 times the damage per shot AND the quaso can just plink at any armoured spot and shred it’s defences while applying massive flinch (or open up any fight by 1-shotting anything smaller than an ATAT/Titan). Rail gun should be the weak point killer. If you can see it, it can drill a hole through it, and if that hole connects with a radiator/head/engine/weapon then it should apply MASSIVE damage. Otherwise maybe rip off a leg or cause a flinch/trip/stagger but remain otherwise combat effective. So keep the 1-2 shot on most things, chargers/hulks/gunships should be 3-5 shot depending on location hit, tanks/turrets/titans/ATAT 6-12 depending on if it’s a direct weak point or penetrative then into weak point hit. Add 50% of that to safe mode so you CAN kill anything “safe” it just takes more ammo and time to do so.

@IRMentat That's fine too, but I'd honestly love it if were a slightly faster gun. Decrease charge time also makes it so you're not just waiting for the charge too long while being fired at or leaving yourself vulnerable to enemy fire. Firing faster also does mean you can effectively kill things, even if the damage has been nerfed. It still kills things. It just takes too long at the moment. Plus, the double stock would allow you to make a mistake without having to worry about both reloading, and waiting for the charge. This isn't even taking into consideration potential repositioning on failed shots which would just add to the amount of time you get to fire the gun once again. Just my opinion.

the real skill issue was the devs kneejerk reaction to nerf the railgun into the ground instead of loading a dev map and testing the railgun on a bile titan to see if it really was just the gun doing that by itself.

I mean, it does need a buff against some mobs, but def cant go Back to what it used to be. It was basically one gun for every heavy enemy in the game, and also had a lot of ammo too, quasar and EAT have some ressona to 1-2 shots enemies, railgun dont, but gezz 24 shots to kill a titan is ridiculous. Should be 4 shots intirely charged at 90-95% and about 8-10 Half charged.

@@brunomonteiro7788 why can't it go back to what it used to be? it's literally a chunk of metal getting thrown at mach 7 at an enemy and it somehow takes 1400 shots to kill that enemy with a round going that fast? hell if you shot that thing at a tank in real life it'd punch through most of the armor (or pen) an m1 abrams lmfao. yet it's the biggest disappointment in the game. weird.

@@konigstiger8518 Using real life as an example isn't exactly accurate lol. In real life to have a rail cannon do what you want it to do it would need to be the size of a building and use more energy than is used by most small countries. I agree that it needs a change but like all the other guns it needs a weakness and I don't know if the devs have found a good fit for it yet. Quasar cannon has a crazy recharge time, autocannon has fucked aim/recoil/reload times etc. Putting it back exactly as it was would negate all the work they have done since then because it would do the job of everything else without the downsides of anything else.

It already was a Primary in the first game. Always thought it was odd they made it Support to begin with. I say put it back to Primary as-is and then introduce a large over the shoulder railcannon Support that functions as a Recoilless Rifle sidegrade.

@@sebasou2277 not necessarily you could have it have variable charge power where the quasar is an all or nothing charge up. I however don't think we need another shoulder fired anti armor weapon unless it has something completely different going for it.

That's literally Quasar lol. I would be down if they made it a primary. Maybe nerf the armor pen SLIGHTLY to the point it would take 2 full chargers to kill a Hulk, not 1. And they could explain it lore-wise like "The gun was in development, and since then it hit mass production (at the cost of a little bit firepower), allowing Helldivers to use it as a primary weapon."

@@sebasou2277 A directed energy weapon and a railcannon can have extremely different gameplay properties and aesthetic style. If I were to make it, for example, the railcannon would have extreme overpenetration at full charge and even cause spalling/shrapnel clouds out of the exit wounds of large targets like Chargers, creating secondary AoE cones dangerous to small enemies. Also, I hope we eventually get a mech with a superheavy railcannon so we can go LARP as Metal Gear REX.

I've been running it again because it is a fun gun to play with. The original version was the best gameplay this game had. Good ammo constraints, good interaction with chargers, fun vs mediums (u still have to aim at heads). Much more fun than arc throwers since the bullet goes where you aim. The most fun state of the game was pre railgun nerfs.

I still use it occasionally on bots with stuns, it's fun when you can perfectly line up those eyeball shots. When there's a tank, gunship, cannon turret, or fab strider though.. You're basically fucked if you're alone. Which is why I only use it when trying to meme around with friends.

Devs stated they make balance changes based off of statistics. A lot of the community doesn’t think they play the game. They need more dogfooding or a small QA team. Examples: Slugger nerf and Dominator buff. They basically traded positions in firepower. Railgun nerf and bile titan 2 shot bug. Fire damage buff and DOT bug.

@@lesscommonsense1804 The Dominator was mid before because of the recoil. The recoil is the same as before, but the higher damage now means you don't need as many consecutive shots on target to get a kill, making it basically what the DMRs SHOULD be, but apparently Arrowhead doesn't realize this. I don't know why it's so hard to just increase the damage on the Diligence and Counter Sniper. They both need their damage doubled and to be given Medium Armor Penetration. It's absolutely dumb that I can't kill a Stalker in a full mag with the Diligence. Especially considering how few spare mags you're given.

Ironically it was your railgun videos that brought me to your channel. You post things (with receipts) and I appreciate the transparency and testing you do. I've learned from watching your gameplay how to dive + throw my strategems where I want them to go instead of using servo assisted armor. So I'm just as baffled when people just say "skill issue/ git gud" without replying with a video showcasing their points.

The "skill issue" excuse is so over used it's plastered over inapplicable problems. Actual Players: "The game is crashing during extraction!" Internet: "Skill Issue, bruh." Me: "Show me the required skills in not having a game bug out due to a coding error from an update. What skill is that?"

The point of a "railgun" is a weapon that shoots projectiles at a insanely high velocity to penetrate the thickest of armors you will encounter, playing it in unsafe mode should make it one of the best weapons that specializes in dealing with single target heavily armored enemies. What we currently have in game literally jsut feels like a sniper rifle with a bit extra damage. It is not cool, not realistic, nor fun to use, so then what purpose it is serving?

A rail gun that kills tanks would be too big for a man to carry. You need to understand how much power is necessary. A man portable rail gun that is "realistic" would at best be a strong sniper rifle with no recoil.

Railgun is kinda out of place. In most games it have limitless penetration but very moderate damage and perfect to deal with very heavy armored but low HP targets. There are no such targets in HD2 per se. They either armored AND a bullet sponge on top of it or have lightly armored weakspots that can be shot with primary. Hulk is the only thing in the game that is somewhat good target for railgun. The solution would be to add new weakspots with crazy damage multipliers on enemies or just add new enemies with such weakspots that only railgun can penetrate. As of right now it has no niche to fill. Make it stronger and it will be meta again leave it as is and it will have 0% pick rate.

Honestly i'd be fine if they adapted the spnning effect on the quaser for all those charging weapons. Where you can see it grow tighter while aiming it properly. then once its small it'll change colour as it goes near boom boom

On that note, the third-person crosshairs should be fancier in general, and more customizable. I would love the ability to change the color/size/opacity (and perhaps even shape) of the center dot and the active tracking circle independently. I also think they should be constantly available. It doesn't feel like the weapons which currently don't have third-person crosshairs (The AMR and HMG) make the game any more interesting by not having them - The AMR is only mildly more annoying to use at close ranges, and the HMG is already outright terrible.

@@thelegendaryklobb2879 Yeah - I have found that the "hybrid aim mode" setting (where you only use one aim button, with a "hold to third person aim, click once to first person aim" operation) feels considerably better, but it's not 100% perfect either.

@@BackwardsPancake The most boggling thing is that there's no way to set the first person aiming to be activated on hold just like the normal third person. I hate toggling aim mode in basically every game, but here you have no choice if you want to aim in first person

Better scope would be a nice change too. Make it more easy to land weakpoint shots. Right now the scope makes it so beyond 20-30m the red dot sight genuinely covers up the entire enemy

I don't even think it has a place as a Primary because then it's just an Eruptor with less ammo, damage, fire rate, and lack of AoE damage It seriously needs some love

It's a weaker Eruptor that has less ordinance in its round, and can reach a lot further (Eruptor rounds seem to have a timed fuse in them and will explode after a certain distance of free-flight.) So basically it's an even worse version of the Dominator, meaning it's at best, a bad competitor for the Liberator Penetrator.......That's not a good position to be in....

Counterpoint. It has much higher muzzle velocity, better handling, infinite range and better armor penetration than the Eruptor, allowing it to consistently kill Devastators just aiming at their torso (with Eruptor you have to hit that VERY specific weakpoint in their waste/legs, which sometimes is not easy at distance and if the target is moving), and it kills Hulks from the front. Yes, much less utility and no AoE. But I'd still consider taking it as a primary, that's for sure.

It take out everything but heavies in one shot, hulks in one too, chargers in 2/3. In safe mod, it's the pre-nerf slugger with triple the damage and one third of the mag. I don't think it would be bad by any mean.

honestly, if they left it alone in safe mode, plus your idea of not having penetration damage loss, it would feel super fun and tactical vs hordes. You could line up shots and try to see how many you can zap in 1 shot. Then make the unsafe mode feel REALLY unsafe, where it's difficult to wield but can bring down super heavy enemies in a reasonable number of shots. 20-30 shots for a bile titan is inexcusable

Problem is there are not THAT many enemies lined up in front of you at any given time, even on Helldive against bugs. You would need the RG work like the Coilgun in DRG, which has AoE around its projectile (kinda like a tube of electricity/fire around the bullet, if you want to visualize it better), and that AoE zone stays in place a couple seconds after firing.

@@squeezyjibbs6643agreed, all rind the enemy numbers actively running a players most of the time is quite low. They are just replenishing almost as fast (or faster) than most people can kill then depending on difficulty. It’s a skilful dev ruse/performance-trick but it does mean that 90% of the time there’s only really 25-30 spread out enemies around most of the time. It’s why turrets and gas/napalm can farm 50 odd kills on a big breach but nothing short of an eagle cluster in the middle of th map 30 minutes in is going to get anywhere near that otherwise.

Railgun being able to hit multiple enemies past the first one is pointless in HD2 because that situation barely comes up, sure it can be fun when it rarely happens, but stop bringing that aspect up as a priority. Youd be fairly dissapointed to learn that overpenetration of a small projectile like that actually makes it less dangerous as far as damage goes. If you want dmg u want a round that basically penetrates the skin and then blooms out not exit out the back. Railgun in game 1 was more of stunning weapon that dealt some dmg. But thats what they turned the arc thrower into so i doubt theyre gonna go that route for the railgun. Altho its current setup with proper stun duration wouldnt be that bad.

@@doctorhealsgood5456 im perfectly aware hence why i know a railgun would need a speed much higher than mach 5 cuz most guns we have now have projecfile flying at twice that speed mach 5 sounds impressive but 5 times the speed of sound is only like 1700ms most snipers we have reach near 3000 ms. So no a mach 5 projectile wouldnt. A railgun projectile still wouldnt its highly dependant on its size and head shape what it would do. Now i cant 100% guess how fictional balistics work but i can guess that its similar to using armor penetrating ammo on a poorly armored target irl. Where you needle small holes into a target instead of making a giant mess of their insides. Its still deadly dont get me wrong but for stuff like the giant insects we are fighting it wouldnt be great. Would be good on bots tho due to armor spalding.

@@SuperVideoman2012 3000 per second would be a correct approximation, !. Take the arguably strongest sniper rifle round: the 408 cheytac: has a velocity of 3000 feet/sec, which is 1100 meters/sec. Though I agree that mach 5 is still pathetically slow, at as you said 1700m/sec. For reference, the speed of a space shuttle reentering the atmosphere is going at about Mach 25!!! That is 8600 meters/second!!!, a speed that would make much more sense out of a magnetic gun.

Seems they need to hit mach 7 or more to be considered a railgun most modern guns should be around mach 3 to mach 4 teritory. So a decent estimate would be double yo triple the speed of a normal projectile. Bigger issue really is that the bullet isnt going to be very big if u wanna reach that speed in handheld format. Cartridges we load are more likely mostly energy packs than actual bullet.

That was not the excuse The reason behind the nerf that people wasn't using the weapon as was designed, which means that people was not using the unsafe mode and charging it to a point where you were unsafe and in risk of bñowing up. The railgun is basically superfluous now. Punisher - medium plus knockback Dominator - rifle version of the punisher, allows for pinpoint accuracy on bot heads Amr - basically an antitank rifle that you can noscope with. Autocannon - seriously, with its backpack, it is the best gun in the game to clear a bunch of mediums. Eruptor, crossbow, arc thrower, eat, qasar, flamethrower, they are all specialised but fulfill that railgun role. Imo, the railgun needs to be buffed so it is something better than a dominator but worse than an eat.

They should buff the higher charge dmg numbers. If 60% is 100%dmg Like at 80% = 150% dmg 90% =250% dmg and for the skilled helldivers 95%= 350%dmg. So it feels more rewarding for charging up.

Helldivers IN LORE are Expendable incarnate. think about it, the Helldivers training is just a one and done obstacle course then you're shipped out, WITHOUT ANY OTHER TRAINING! You're under prepared, out gunned, and out numbered yet you do it for Liberty.

@@lupvirga That's all well and good in universe. However, the reason that *I* as a player am here is because the movement feels good and the weapons are satisfying to use. There are games which I will play for the sake of roleplaying and emphatizing with the characters, but Helldivers 2 has gone very far out of it's way to not _have_ any characters (Seriously - Can you name the 3 voiced NPCs on your ship off the top of your head? Can you name any 3 characters, for that matter?). All the world-building and even the player-driven narrative (as mechanically cool as it is) is also played as nothing but paper-thin satire that's very hard to care about. So the only thing of substance that leaves me with are the mechanics. Luckily, they're solid and carry the experience, although they could be better. And that's what brings us here.

When clearly the game has tonnes of other planets and sectors that were going to be unlocked at a later date... I'm afraid many people have lost basic critical thinking skills...

i dont hold much faith they'll walk their nerf back. that'll be akin to them admitting their knee-jerk reactionary nerf AND the smack they talked on people for using it was wrong. these are the guys that dumpster weapons based on pickrate, and then turn around and add/buff things to the game that far exceed the things they just nerfed, lol. i'd like to be wrong, but track record doesn't inspire hope in me.

the point of the railgun primary would be similar to the eruptor or dominator or old Slugger. Its not for clearing, its for mid-sized enemies. and in the railguns case, itd have the added benefit of being able to help deal with chargers albeit very ineffectively. Whereas the added benefits of the eruptor are its utility, and the dominator being its stagger and larger ammo capacity.

I see this is a bit of a hot take, but I used to agree that the railgun was completely worthless... On terminids, I 100% agree it is the weakest pick. However.. using it with the jump pack on automatons, I have been enjoying it. You can one shot most enemies, even hulks with short wind up. That, plus not requiring a backpack slot, makes me see its point over the autocannon. Solo? Yeah no chance, however with a team you can handle most enemies with a good composition. I honestly, 100% understand and think the nerf was justified. The reason it was Meta with the shield was because using anything else felt like you weren't able to hold your weight when I played. I basically had to run Shield+Railgun or else felt useless. After it's nerf, I tried other weapons, and had more fun on top of them being more viable. For terminids it's just useless and not worth it on the hardest diff. Your support slot is basically dedicated to dealing with chargers/bile titans or clearing hordes of chaff and medium enemies.

if we don't count basic mobs and variations of the same mob railgun can only handle half of the automatons at a reasonable pace. Devastators, berserkers & hulks. Tanks, gunships & factory striders make up the other half. That's a glorified primary weapon with the added ability to kill hulks & AMR doesn't need a back and can kill the entire roster of bots at a reasonable pace.

@@OhDough I mean, yeah it won't destroy everything. But that's fine, the point of the weapon is to quickly and rapidly take out small groups of medium or some heavy enemies. It's got no backpack so it can't be the strength of the AC or whatever. I won't deny the AMR is stronger than the railgun, but I find it less fun. Railgun needs a buff but I think the nerf was justified, as it completely trumped every option. You should synergize your stratagems with your primary/secondary. If your main weapons are single target, say marksman rifles, going railgun is a bad pick. However, if you take something like the sickle, the ARs, or the SMGs, a railgun can be justified as a quick way to take out med tier enemies quickly and consistently on bots, while having a backpack slot. It's far from the strongest and outclassed by many options, but it is still fun and not the worst support weapon IMO. That would go to the RR, Stalwart, or HMG for me.

Simplest solution, reduce the charge time down to .5s from 1s per stage, as the TTK is the real problem, though could leave the overcharge bar as is at 1s to reduce risk of self-explosion. EAT: .5s TTK vs Charger (1 shot), 1s TTK vs Titan (2 shot), 1.9 ammo /min (1.9 Chargers, .95 Titans /min). Recoiless: 6.1-1.3s vs Charger & reload (1), 12.2-2.6s vs Titan & reload, without/with team reload (2), .83-1.25 ammo /min (.83-1.25 Chargers, .41-.62 Titans /min), without/with single resupply. Quasar: 13s vs Charger & "reload" (1), 26s vs Titan & "reload" (2), 4.6 ammo /min (4.6 Chargers, 2.3 Titans /min). Current Railgun: 12s vs Charger & reload (3), 76s vs Titan & reload (19), 2.9-4.3 ammo /min (.96-1.43 Chargers /min, .15-.22 Titan/s Minute), without/with single resupply. Upgraded Railgun: 6s vs Charger & reload (3), 38 vs Titan & reload (19), same as above. All others would retain their niches, though Quasar might drop ever so slightly in prominence against Chargers and the Railgun would finally be able to compete against Titans, even if at the expense of practically all of its ammo.

You have to hit it precisely on the legs, but that's like... almost impossible because A. you need to be in first person, which sucks. B. the charger legs move a shit ton while its running at you so it's damn near impossible to hit it on the leg.

My personal opinion is that they won't buff or change railgun on the basis that they don't want to admit their mistake of nerfing it in the first place. Arrowhead has shown their willingness to make stealth buffs/nerfs that makes changes hard to nail down, and conveniently makes criticisms of some bugs hard to verify. I would gladly eat my words if they do though, since they did finally fix the ps5 bug.

Well they have admitted that fire got buffed due to the bug around DOT damage so they have set a precedent for admitting mistakes and going back to the drawing board They even set a precedent for adjusting weapon archetypes to be more in line with player fantasy as opposed to dev intent (A La the laser cannon)

@@squeezyjibbs6643 yeah when they did the first major buff pass on a lot of weapons including the laser cannon, they mentioned that they wanted it to be like a laser version of a machine gun but people had equated the fantasy of the orbital laser cannon drilling down on things and saw a big disconnect with the laser cannon, so they adjusted their idea of the laser cannon to fit the player fantasy better by giving it true medium pen.

Additional idea that's cool but will never be implemented because it would require a lot more work: Ammo Types The Railgun's whole thing is that it loads and fires one shot at a time. That shot is just a metallic projectile, and you could probably put all sorts of funky stuff in it. So, how about when you pull up the reload menu, you can switch the loaded ammunition on the left-hand side? That way, you can choose the type of shell based on what you're trying to do. You could have something like: - AP Slug: The basic all-metal slug round we have now. Precise and maximizes penetration, but has no special effects. - HE-Frag: A non-penetrating shell that explodes on contact. Basically an Eruptor shot, but it travels faster and flatter. - Flechette: A bundle of needles that scatter in a cone after being fired. Like an armor-piercing shotgun blast. - Tracker: This shell contains a homing beacon. Once it penetrates a target, it becomes embedded inside and activates. Going forward, that target will be live-tracked with a red outline, even through obstacles. While in this state, all weapons deal bonus damage to it, you can lock on to it with a SPEAR even if you don't have direct line of sight, and auto-targeted stratagems (Laser, Railcannon, Rocket pods, Turrets) will prioritize it if possible.

idea: give it a slight boost in some of the places you said, give it better sights and here is the big cool idea: give it a backpack call it the next phase in the prototype. make the backpack optional but it has a charge bar ON IT plus it makes the charge almost instant at a cost of charges in the backpack plus plus make the overcharge do stoopid damage. make the backpack have a limited number of charges SEPARATE FROM THE AMMO for balance and make the maximum overload shots take two charges (not two ammo in the gun) have the backpack only recharge from supply drops or not at all. sorry for the disorganized thoughts.

Hopefully when they buff it, they make it so the armor pen you get from unsafe mode is a lower %. Needing 90% charge just gives you way too little time from enough charge to when youll blow yourself up + it also takes a really long time to get there lol. Let it 2 shot chargers to the head with like 80% charge and 5-6 shot ish bile titans. Wouldnt be amazing, but also wouldnt be worthless. Still shows the dedicated anti-tanks are far more effective at obliterating things, but it also lets you help out with the heavies at reduced effectiveness. Say your teammate hit the bile titan in the face but ran out of recoiless ammo or doesnt have EAT on cooldown, what have you, you can shoot it 3 ish times to help clean up. Its not ideal but gives the option.

I think it should keep the low damage, but have extremely high penetration and stagger damage, to the point it can stun lock a bile titan. Plus give it a proper sniper scope. This way, it has two roles - the high armour pen lets it tear through medium enemies (could go through devastator shields to take off their arms, go through multiple spewers/brood commanders), while it can also act as support vs heavy enemies without actually filling the role of heavy AT

I had an idea on how to make unsafe mode better and have a purpose. Increase the total ammo you have for the gun from 20 to either 30 or 40. Then increase the clip size of the gun to 2. Finally make unsafe charge shots. Use both ammo from the clip while safe mode only uses one shot from the clip. This effectively allows you to shoot faster in safe mode but giving up the damage while conversely you shoot slower in unsafe mode because you have to reload every shot and you have to balance how much ammo you're using. This can go in conjunction with some of the other upgrades to the railgun that you proposed to give unsafe mode a reason for existing like penetrating multiple targets or stripping armor.

I'm kinda that person, I have friends that still keep playing it everyday, trying to get to level 150. For me personally after reaching 60 I've done and accomplished everything I wanted to do in Helldivers, and there's a ton of other steam games still waiting for me. I'd rather wait for more content, such as vehicles to come to helldivers so that the experience would be new and interesting.

Agreed. On that note though, arc thrower also could use some adjustment, they both suffered from the devs making false conclusions with the damage bug, even with its targeting fixed it could either use some slightly higher fire rate or longer range or even both.

I have 2 ideas to buff railgun: 1 - option to overload it by draining backpack charge, allowing one super-charged shot. 2 - unsafe mode damage scales exponentially, allowing you to potentially 2-shot bile titans. However, higher charges warp the rails, causing progressively worsening bullet deviation, total damage/penetration reduction and maybe even lowering and obscuring the detonation threshold. This can then be fixed by replacing the rails with a very long repair animation.

Q-cannon 1 shot charger unlimited ammo no risk to using it. The only nerf railgun needed was to safe mode armor pen. Railgun should 2 shot charger max unsafe charge. And the same to bile titan in the gizzards. It doesn't have unlimited ammo, and it can explode you. It should be the risky version of the q-cannon.

i think the best way to buff the railgun, would be to give it insane armor pen even when in safe mode, and when fully charged in unsafe mode, give it a damage buff for that one single shot. and give it enough pen to where it can go straight through hulks, tanks, and chargers while even in safe mode. this way you can leave the damage where it's at but by giving it the ability to ignore armor and have extra damage when charged fully in unsafe mode it'll become a great multitool like the laser cannon

That’s the conclusion I’ve pretty much come to. It’s like, auto cannon can’t effectively kill bile titans and it’s not even that great to bring to bugs. But auto cannon was never in the position that railgun was so there is no fall from glory to grieve over. I can’t kill heavy targets with the mg-43.. why does railgun deserve to do heavy target clearing when it’s got the ability to one shot almost EVERYTHING except for heavily armored targets?

@lolersauresrex8837 well said. But it's never going to be good enough. The rail gun is great for quickly killing the tougher enemies like brood commanders, bile spewers, devastators and even hulks. Letting you deal with the chaff. You can't have one gun be able to kill everything you want to kill a tank, a tower, or a titan bring proper AT weapons.

The armour expose option is the one I would prefer. I wouldn't mind them making it more like the Railgun in HD1 though. Alot of punch trough on smaller enemies and full on stun on the bigger ones. It does stun and animation interupt in HD2 but if the damage stays as is the stun should be alot stronger.

I love the railgun, but its sad that there is a lot of stuff we cannot realisticaly damage. Btw turrets seems to take damage but not from cooling vent, but just near it, still on the back but on the metal part. need more testing

Also, I have to say, I really feel you on that @ 9:40 In my mind, the mark of a supremely excellent game is that it's worth playing for the sake of playing alone. That the mechanics are so solid that the mere act of mastering and using them is fun and rewarding. (Few games get to _that_ level of refinement though, so a few perpetual goals and tickers/counters here and there can still help.) If a game is like a chore, where you just play to get to max level and uninstall, then I kind of wonder why you'd even care or bother in the first place.

The railgun should have two modes. One that uses the full charge on penetration and one that has less penetration but converts the the excess energy into emp discharge inside the target creating a stagger debuff.

fully agree that the time investment for a single enemy type is insane for the railgun, you have to dedicate 20-60 seconds of "uninterrupted" fire to kill the moderate threats while most other weapons can do it in 2-5 shots/seconds with plenty of spare time for add-clear/map-management in between. in terms of "unsave" charging i'd vastly simplify the meter, green for safe, yellow unsafe BOILING BRIGHT RED for "boom imminent", i'd also double the time-to-boom as unless the weapon turns into a super-grenade/pocket-500kg when it explodes there's zero reason for the unsafe to be so brutal considering the relatively low overall also i'd have it so the railgun can OVER-pen in unsafe, as in shoot out turret radiators from the front, just have it take as many hits from the front in unsafe as it would have from the rear in safe. I'm mostly with you on the values at 8:01, a dedicated single target TTK like that is reasonable considering it's ALL spent on that single enemy, maybe +1 it on those values to justify the "anti EVERYTHING" nature of the weapon and that there's potentially 2-3 other people around also firing at the same enemy. in regards to armour-removal (as opposed to shooting to damage the component behind said armour) IMO a limbs armour should break at 50-66% of that limb HP gone from any penetrative source. in addition to that heat(not fire), acid/gas, directed-explosions (EAT/thermite/AC-turret style rather than GL/grenade AoE/shrapnel) and maybe something later on should be able to rip away/degrade armour even if they don't damage the limbs below (which many of them should).

Honestly id love to see some of these ideas coming into the game, started to play the railgun after the nerf and i just absolutely love the feeling of the gun i know its in a very meh spot but still it usually makes it into my loadout every mission. But in the end we can only pray what Arrowhead has in Mind.

My roommate is trying to convince me that I think railgun is bad because I am using it in safe mode too. No, railgun is bad because Quasar outclasses it in every use case. And I use Eruptor as well for medium and soft targets. And if I wasnt using Eruptor, I'd be using AMR before I use railgun.

quasar only replaces railgun vs bugs and it's not intentionally. a bug made railgun insane vs titans. railgun is outclassed by AMR, auto cannon & laser cannon

@@OhDough even on bots. The only thing I would rather use AMR for is Hulks since they can be 2 tapped to the eye. Every other big target aside from striders goes down in 2 shots to quasar. And I can be clearing out little guys while it is on cool down.

for damage i think they should just add more armoured weakspots to enemies like the hulks face, so low damage high pen weapons like the railgun can be very punishing / rewarding for good aim. That way it doesn't have OP damage where you can just shoot at anything and kill it, but there is still a way to kill your big enemies with challenging shots. Maybe add a little 'brain' plate to the chargers head. Or an internal hit zone, where if your shot pens that from any angle it dies.

I don't mind the not being able to see the charge in 3rd person mode, I find it kind of plays into that "you want situational awareness, then you don't get to see your gun" a charge bar would take away from the 'realisticness' they try and put in the game. Also it feels pretty badass when you get in the zone with the timing, think that's a nice skillcap feature a bit like the reload button you have to press. Makes you have to concentrate on more things which makes it more satisfying when you nail it.

I think what really holds the rail gun back is the lack of an indicator for third person mode like you mentioned. It's hard to get those reward for risk if you can't really leverage it as well during third person. Having it so that there's a sound indicator or some sort of color bar on the cross hair would help tremendously. Maybe increase the time you can stay on 100% charge by like 0.5 seconds too. Another thing in addition to the damage buff would be having a better sight or sight options.

I feel like in safe mode, at max charge, it should do the same damage as a quasar but with slightly more armour pen and without the splash damage. Then unsafe mode should increase the amount of enemies it penetrates, allowing you to beam multiple small and medium bugs or bots, for example. Compensate for that by either increasing the reload time or reducing the amount of ammo you can carry.

relatively new to the game, but id like to see how well it strips armor, as that was what it was described as. i'd love to see it strip armor off factory striders and bile titans, so normal weapons can shoot it. i heard that the sacs under a bile titan and the forehead of a fac-strider can be opened for weapons with medium armor penetration, but thats all i know of.

With the new weapons and buffs to old weapons, there's almost nothing that even the PRE-nerf railgun could do that other weapons can't do just as well if not better. Like, a stun grenade plus a flamethrower (even before I unlocked the new ship upgrade for +25% dmg) kills a charger faster than the railgun ever did. And the stun grenade isn't even necessary, just makes it easier. Post-nerf railgun is just sad.

Railgun is a primary weapon in first game, and it was great for that role, granted it had literal penetration through enemies only stopping on heavies. Oh and it stunned hit targets for few seconds.

I would love for it to do more.As of now,I just don’t deal with gunships/striders/tanks far away.Also,in my experience,the rail gun straight up doesn’t charge sometimes in unsafe mode and my shots bounce off or hot the hulk in the visor but they live.

I really like the idea of it being less about high damage to a single target and more so doing massive overpen through targets. Imagine 2 shots through a line of beserkers. Safe mode the penetration keeps going on light units, barely into unsafe it can pen through mediums, and max it can pen through heavies. It should def go back to 2 shotting charger legs though. Small dmg buff.

Another way could be to fully differentiate the railgun from other weapons by reworking it... Something like, above 70% charge, it becomes a piercing shot that can't break armor/parts in any way but deals raw damage, and the bigger the enemy part it passes through, the more damage they take... Would turn it into a dedicated titan/factory killer that is however unable to break parts, and can work in safe mode as a worse AMR

The pre nerf railgun was fine honestly. Your suggestion would make it worse than every primary weapon. It only has 1 bullet in the chamber.

Yeah, the railgun should be better. Perhaps it should even return to the way it was in exchange for charging even slower. I tend to like it when weapons can have a big impact and a slower charging time would also allow for the different charge lvls to be useful, as well as give time aiming during these while being a punishment for the big guys. Also perhaps remove unsafe mode or finally save your gun settings for support weapons too (same for remembering if you wanted 1st or 3rd person on any gun).

Having over charge strip armor on enemies is imho a good way to balance it, and give it a coop use. Perhaps not strip even. Just reduce armor 1 step. That way you can hurt hulks with 500kg from the front. Meaning that the railgunner will fire on hulks that are in the vrong position relative to the stratagem beam, to make it more effective.

I think Railgun should be a versatile weapon that targets mid-size enemies while still performing OK (but not optimal) against heavy units. It should have a bit slower time to kill against chargers and bile titans compared to true anti-tank which lack versatility. 2 shots to strip charger leg armor, 3 shots for headshot kill. 6-7 shots for bile titan. All of these are unsafe mode.

They could make it a battery-based weapon that uses more energy the further you charge the shot. So you could do maybe 3-5 full charge shots per battery, but if you're doing low charge shots you could get a lot more out. It would also help lower the multishot TTKs basically I want a revifle because that shit's cool

i think the issue is that if you make it be able to kill everything even if it takes 4-6 shots it would make it busted as it does not require backpack and with the new ship module you get full ammo back (when they fix it) from a single box.

maybe if the railgun had an ability that knocked off armor from the hulks or chargers leaving them exposed to primary dmg. idk if you said this but the rail cannon would be viable if it could do that to a bile titan.

When I read the patch notes initially I was like “Cool. This doesn’t change much for me since I always have it on unsafe anyways. Maybe I need to fire 3 shots instead of 2.” Man was I wrong. Their patch notes made NO sense.

yeah id love if it was insanely good at armour stripping, but basically useless against soft targets, with the logic being that the round is just moving so fast that it goes through soft tissue like nothing happened, but when it hits hard armour it stops and imparts all that force into it and shatters it. Would also love to see it actually go through things more consistently, but also, i just think it would be really cool if when it shot into soft tissue of a target, and hit hard armour from the inside coming out, it still did its job, just a fun visual in my head of someone shooting through the back of a charger and hitting its head. It needs a niche, rn its a slow firing low damage weapon that kills you faster than it kills enemies.
