It's worth pointing out that Koine Greek didn't have a single pronunciation, it varied across the hellenic world. This video seems to use the Alexandrian koine pronunciation (voiced stops are fricatives but the aspirates are retained), but their also existed European and Anatolian variants which were closer to Modern Greek in pronunciation.

Its pronunciation also changed throughout the time. For example, seen as they used Byzantine clothing, the medieval pronunciation would be one akin to the modern one.

I am so happy this is not Erasmian pronunciation. This is a very credible reconstruction. Having said that, I must admit that I like the sound of modern Greek much better.

Are you Greek? If so, it could be just that you are used to this accent and therefore find it more natural. If youre not, then you can be more unbiased. But I also think that the voice of the person reading modern Greek was also more "natural"...

@@stelios5314 I am not Greek. Just a lifelong Helena file. Ever since I discovered all sorts of parallels between the history of my ancestors and the history of the Greeks before they were conquered by the Romans. We were divided into city states with many intellectuals and great thinkers among us. We influenced many of the peoples around us. Some of them conquered us, and took our discoveries for their own.

@@AndronikosNikephoros the medieval Greek of the eastern Romans also sounded like Spanish. All of the sound changes that made that happen had already taken place. It just didn’t have as many Turkish borrowings in it. In order for Greek not to sound like Spanish, you have to go back another thousand years. Think of Archimedes’ time.

Erasmian pronunciation is wrong. In no language in the world are all the letters pronounced. Just listening to the Erasmian pronunciation makes it easier for you to spell to write with orthography.

The Lord's Prayer is in Matthew 6:9-13. The New Testament was originally written in Koine Greek.

The modern Greek rendering of the prayer is translated, rather transliteratied,. You should pronounce the old text in both ways,, no one says the prayer translated. Even the 90 years old people say it in koine. Always in koine. If you did so, it would be identical, this is a bit confusing for a non Greek speaker, it's a different text.

Koine Greek was spoken in any part of the Greek world after the conquests of Alexander the Great. It became the lingua franca for any Greek from Magna Graecia (southern Italy) to Bactria (Pakistan). After the Western Roman Empire fell koine Greek became the language used by in Byzantine empire

Before Alexander each author would mainly write in their own dialect (Herodotus wrote in Ionian Greek, Sappho in Aeolian, spartan poets in Dorian, Plato in Attic and so on). By the IV century BC Koine Greek started getting around, but authors would still use a mixture of dialect and koine like the scholars of Alexandria. Polibius for example, a III century historian, wrote in Koine. By the time Rome became an empire Koine was the most known variant of the language. Dialects were still probably around but koine had become the main language by then

Yesn’t What we refer to as “Ancient Greek” is actually a collection of different dialects spoken in various parts of Greece. Each region had its own variant of the language. Koine Greek eliminated that problem and created a lingua franca for all Greeks, which still was actually based on the Athenian dialect, known as Attic Greek (being it considered more sophisticated). It had its differences but an Ancient Greek wouldn’t have had problems understanding it

Anything around 40-80 percent. Depends if it's spoken or written, and how many of the words in each text are used in modern Greek. Generally you can understand what a text says with no big probelm.

But originally Greek had these sounds (plain t, aspirated t and d) only later the aspirated t and the d became the fricatives θ and ð. Edit: θ > hard th, ð > soft th.
