I just saw a young Russian lady on YT, who explained in English, that they pronounce Russia as Ro-see-ya, “because it’s more Greek”. I knew they preferred this pronunciation, but this reason surprised me a little.

Maybe she wanted to say that the today's name "Ra-se-ya" (the correct way the Russians pronounce this word) is a hellenized version of the ancient term "Rus'"?

As a Hellenic American, I love learning more about my native-Hellene father’s culture. It has been one of the most important, if not the most important, cultural heritages, in Europe and the Near East for thousands of years. It even extended into the Middle East and Central Asia for a thousand years after Alexander. Since the spread of European culture around the world, I think it’s the most influential culture in the world, too. What a legacy!

Professor Kaldelis though is claiming the opposite: that Byzantium was Roman and not Greek!

@@ThomasGazisyes indeed…. Wonder how well would this idea settle among actual Romans of the Middle Ages. You know…those living in the Papal States. 😂

He's trying to transpose his modern leftwing modernist definition of ethnic identity on easten Romans to fit in with Sksopians foreign apologists the claimed them "Macedonians". They were not an "ethnic" group. Easterm Roman emperor, Leo V was an Armenian. Constantine was a mix of Illyrian and Greek. They were from different ethnic background but emphasized Roman national identity and Christianity over ethnic heritage. The western Holy Roman empire even insisted they were mostly Greeks not Roman.

Speaking as a pagan, there are some good parts in the transition to Christianity, like giving up on slavery and bloodsports
