It’s wild to think this is a DISNEY song about Frollo, the man who almost drowned the baby he orphaned, calls upon Mary, the woman who did everything she could for her child, to destroy a woman of a nationality he hates, but also lusts for. Gotta say, Disney doesn’t have the balls for things like this anymore

Disney doesn’t know how to write good original villains anymore, in my opinion of course
@zk27413 жыл бұрын
@@cross-eye1374 Frollo technically isnt an original villain it came from the novel, the song is disney original tho or at least i think
@softg0redraws7452 жыл бұрын
I think that has more to do with Disney doing far more original projects. A lot of the early movies were based off other media. The Hunchback was apparently based off a book and they changed stuff to make it more 'child friendly' as well. Like, Esmerelda apparently died at the end of the book? And she was much younger I believe as well. To the point where she might've been underaged. Disney isn't really 'less ballsy' they're just more original and want to handle bigger stories like Encanto on generational trauma, etc instead of adapting novels about rapey, xenophobic, abelist religion fanatics who lust after potentially teenage - if not child - girls ;:) /lh /nm
@soundwavesuperior282 жыл бұрын
@@softg0redraws745 Those reasons - racist, fanatic, and crazy - are only one of many reasons as to why Frollo is such a great villain. He isn’t meant to be likable, yet in spite of this dislikability, he is nonetheless an epic villain fitting for the time. Encanto was a disappointment imo, and I’ll be the first to say that it doesn’t even hold a candle to the Hunchback of Notre Dame. In my opinion, the best movies have an amazing villain. There are many examples that contradict this, by the way, a lack of a good villain doesn’t inherently make a movie bad or good. Take Graveyard of the Fireflies, for example, one of the most beautiful animated films ever made, yet nonetheless lacking a true villain. This principle goes for writing as a whole, too. Even though you don’t need a good villain to have an amazing story, it is nonetheless considered one of the most essential components to a good story. Disney villains simply do not have the balls they used to. As a whole, that is. There have obviously been many exceptions, such as Mother Gothel or Dr. Facilier. However, even they represent a much greater time for Disney villains as a whole, as both were threatening, manipulative, and imposing. Also, I find it that Disney has in fact done it’s fair share of original & utterly unoriginal concepts. What about the mediocre remakes of Mulan, the Lion King, etc.?

I love both versions of Anna singing this song. When she first sang it, her voice was softer like she’s trying to portray that the guy (can’t spell name) is actually trying to resist and is actually scared. While in this her voice is far more desperate and strong (the gasping is an amazing touch) like the guy can’t keep in control and finally gave in and is kinda going crazy. It really shows that how you sing the song can affect the emotions. Anyway, I love both versions of her singing this song and will prob end up listening to both on repeat for the next week or so.

@@ludameri1384 Why ? Villains can't be gay ? People ain't stupid (most of them), it's not because they see a gay person being bad that they'll think all gays are bad. Only people who already think that will come to that conclusion. And I don't think it would send a bad message. Having a female Frollo that refuses her love for Esmeralda because of her religion would send the message that clutching to your beliefs to the point of denying who you are will lead you to your inevitable doom. That God doesn't hate gays. That if the Devil casts Frollo into the fire, it's not because she's gay but because she's a bad person who'd kill a woman and many other people just because Esmeralda had the misfortune of being beautiful and Frollo just couldn't control her lust. That God doesn't hate gay people. It's actually a lot like in the original movie, except the fact she's gay is even more interesting in my opinion. It could really shows how torn she is between who she is and what she believes in. It could be a message of "accept who you are, don't deny it, and don't hurt others for that reason, otherwise, you won't be happy" and also "God doesn't hate gay people, he hates those who treat them like garbage". Those are good messages in my opinion.

I had a theory that the Phantom of the Opera was inspired through the Hunchback of Notre Dame and that the Phantom was a combination of Quasimodo and Claude Frollo. Phantom and Quasimodo: Disfigured men who desire to be accepted and loved and fall for a beautiful girl who they never end with. Phantom and Claude Frollo: Evil figures who mask their true dark selves by a belief that they are godsend. Become obsessed with a young woman and would resort to murder in order for her to be theirs.

this cover is rlly good and ive seen a lot of people talking about how this movie is still about an old dude wanting to murder a young girl but while theyre right theyre also missing a very major point which is that this movie also highlights the oppression & sexualization of Romani women (Esmerelda is Romani) so i thought it would be important to throw that out there
@medeaworbs69702 жыл бұрын
Indeed. Also the song includes an anti-Romani slur which is just not nessicary. "Historical accuracy" or not, you could also easily sing "the Roma girl" and it would not change the song at all

@@beenice1555, yes, it is a slur. It is a name given to people of a certain ethnicity by people who don’t share that ethnicity. In that way, it is every bit a slur as calling an African American a n****r, an Italian a d**o, a Latino or Hispanic a s**c, and so many others up to and including a non-white calling a Caucasian a h*****y or a c*****r. If, for whatever reason one of these people choose to use such a term for themselves makes it no less a slur if they are called that by anyone else.

This version vibes more with the actual movie character than her original post. The emotions are so much more pronounced in this one but I personally am more of a fan of the first version. It’s a bit more romantic and longing. Less possessive and creepy. Edit: people are getting confused so imma clarify. The way Anna sang the first version was less creepy and more longing. You get the sense that the woman singing thinks of it as romance rather than possession even tho the song is meant to be creey and possessive. This version is fully aware that it’s possession and not love so I’m sitting here listening to it like 😬 which was the point but not what I’m looking for.
@theblasblas4 жыл бұрын

This probably helped a lot of people start to recognize their interest, or get on their way to it. After all, we all have our gay moments, even if it's just once in a lifetime. Long live 🏳️🌈

This version is so much stronger than the older one, ngl the note being held all the way is a good improvement on its own but the whole thing sounds better, the character in the voice is much more vivid. Great glow-up!

Yeah this version sounds really official while the old ver sounds more like a cover? I feel more immersed in the song and story it portrays whereas the older one I'm more focused on the singing

The frustration in her voice at 3:19 is beautiful, and an example of wonderful voice acting within a song.

This actually makes equally as much, if not more sense. A priest conflicted about her sexual feelings, but also confused as she’s lusting after another woman.

@@booperdooper9762 From what I know of the Catholic church, to become a priest you must be male. Different offshoots of Christianity have since revoked that rule where both men and women can become ordained.
@senorsiro37484 жыл бұрын
@@booperdooper9762 There are those that do let women enter the priesthood and even episcopacy. Even gay ones in some cases. But that’s in Sweden, and corresponds with the general population just noping out of Christianity anyway, so it seems to do a fat lot of good.

I feel like this has a deeper meaning than the original. It's about a priestess who desires Esmeralda, another woman, and is trying to justify her homosexuality to God by claiming it's dark magic casted upon her.
@haileyalice27635 жыл бұрын

@vinetail57355 жыл бұрын
Well god really doesn't care that its homosexual, he cares that she has sexual feelings for someone when she swore an oath of not have relationships
@shadowcultist5 жыл бұрын
it would deeper in that it adds the "sin" of homosexuality (according to the catholic church at the time) but I'm pretty sure women weren't allowed to be priests anyways.

This is one of the best vocal performances of any song I have ever heard, made complete not only by the excellent singing but the character filled inflections as well. Its more than a cover but like full on acting of the voice. Amazing
