I googled these nasty bugs as we were camping and they appeared on the ground all over the place and even bit someone's toe. Then I searched it on youtube and found this gem!

Grew up with this show in Saskatchewan, Canada. Not sure why or how we got a Michigan PBS channel, but I'm sure glad we did. I would never miss a Thursday night. Mr. Trost was a true gentleman and sportsman. Thank you for posting these episodes. Brings back some fond memories.
@Michigan-Outdoors6 жыл бұрын
Yes we were televised throughout Canada. Mostly because of an agreement between Detroit Public TV and the Cable Company in Canada had distribution rights. However we also allowed any non-Michigan PBS station to run it without any contract. Also since it was up linked each week on satellite we appeared all over the world.

At 2:45, it is explained that the hellgrammite becomes a dobsonfly in its adult phase. Fred asks if they have the pinchers, and the other fishermen confirm that they do. This is half true, the females retain the mandible structure of the larvae, and their bite is just as strong. But the males grow a pair of "tusks" a couple inches long that look very intimidating, but are harmless and used for grasping a female from behind during mating.
@Michigan-Outdoors2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Very Interesting Information!
@andrewsinclair71592 жыл бұрын
@@Michigan-Outdoors Glad you think so! Here's some bonus info: Hellgrammites rival dragonfly nymphs for being highly effective predators of mosquito larvae, making them invaluable for mosquito population control. Only difference is an adult dragonfly will continue to eat adult mosquitos, while an adult dobsonfly will do that thing Mayflies do where they stop eating and live as adults just long enough to mate and lay eggs. Hellgrammites also eat a lot more minnows and small fish than dragonfly nymphs do, on account of having bigger and more powerful jaws.

We simply bend one pincer back until it breaks and it can no longer pinch you. ! LOL

Thank you so much for one of the most exciting fun and comical videos I've seen on KZbin this year. I fish in different Waters with some of those snapping turtles are massive. I've never picked one up by the tail before but now that I know that their heads and next are not as long as their bodies I will attempt it one day. I got to get some of them pilgrimites I tried them before in the rivers in New York and they work very well on smallmouth bass.
@Michigan-Outdoors2 жыл бұрын
Well I am glad you enjoyed it. A viewer actually submitted a VHS broadcast of this recording (without permission from Us), to America's Funniest Home Videos. AFV played parts of it, actually on several different episodes. The first time I uploaded it, it was immediately flagged for copyright infringement by VinDiBona Productions, (AFV-Disney). I contested it with KZbin as far as I could but they sided with AFV. It required me to hire an attorney which resulted in multiple correspondence, they sent my attorney signed production releases. After more correspondence, and definitive proof of the actual ownership. AFV dropped it without explanation and released the infringement claim. To this day my attorney to my knowledge was not able to get AFV to cease and desist. I could Sue them for back royalties and damages and such but I have had very poor luck with attorneys, judges & court.

I enjoy catching helgrammites, one at a time, rock by rock, just as much as I do the fish! I was taught to hook it underneath the head through the collar, and thread it on like a worm until just past the legs. Those tough little bastards live just as long, but survive many more strikes and catches. One helgrammite should be good for 3 or 4 fish on most days.
@Michigan-Outdoors2 жыл бұрын
Are you catching them in Michigan? I only ask because your Icon is Texas. If you are catching them there since everything is bigger there I would be scared it they were much larger, LOL
