Original lyrics in Polish highlander dialect: Hej Jendrek wojuje, siabli łun nie nosi. Hej Jendrek wojuje, siabli łun nie nosi. Ciupazkom zakrzese jaz do samyk kości. Jendrek dobry juhas, krzese tego złego. Jendrek dobry juhas, krzese tego złego. Zbryka ciupazeckom jaz do upadłego! Translation: Hey Yendrek is fighting, he bears no sabre. Hey Yendrek is fighting, he bears no sabre. He will chop with axe, to the bare bones. Yendrek is a good shepherd boy, he chops the evil guy. Yendrek is a good shepherd boy, he chops the evil guy. He will bash with axe until he falls dead! Short cultural background: Sabre holds a special place in Polish culture, it is seen as a very elegant and prestigious weapon. Kinda like katana for the Japanese. "Yendrek bears no sabre" may indicate that he is a poor lowborn or even a bandit. Ciupaga is a traditional tool used in Polish highlands, it comes in a form of an axe with a really long handle. It can be used as a working tool, a walking stick and a self-defense weapon. I decided to translate it simply as "axe", but personally I don't think it should be translated at all. The translation is mine + I don't really speak Polish highlander, i wrote the lirics down as i hear them so there may be some mistakes
@hngryviirider8710
@hngryviirider8710 Жыл бұрын
The video creator translates it to "Fokos" which is the hungarian word for the weapon. In etimology it just means "Pointed end" or "thrusting tool" Because it's not just an axe but has the pointed end to make it a more versitaile tool. Fun fact "Juhász" Shepperd is the same word in hungarian since we got so much slavic influence in our language. :)

That's what I thought, Janosik a hero of the borderland of Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Robin Hood of the Slavs. The robber and benefactor fought with the nobility who oppressed the highlanders, the perfect character for a decent series. One that would be realized by three nations together. The Carpathians are great and beautiful and many nations live in them, in Janosik's band there would be a place for everyone ;-)

Shame a lot of historical records describe Jánošík as a two bit bandit who was only hunted down after he murdered a priest and got everyone mad
@etnogoral
@etnogoral Жыл бұрын
@@giantotter319Historical records are very biased towards the Hungarian aristocracy. As Urszula Janicka-Krzywda said, I doubt there would be such a positive view and so many oral stories (which often show a different perspective/story than what documents say) about zbojniks if they were truly just robbers.
@giantotter319
@giantotter319 Жыл бұрын
@@etnogoral The oral stories also connect Jánošík and Jakub Surovec, who was born two years after Jánošík's death. If there is any bias, it's in the oral tradition, which was created a century after anyone who got in contact with them already died. This was done to create some myth about resistance against hungarians, since it was trendy at the time.

Could you provide the lyrics in the original language? I don't speak Polish, but I love Polish song! :)

It’s not standard polish but mountainers’ dialect from polish-slovak border. Do you want original lyrics?

i'm from lesser poland, the Goral dialect is somewhat similar to mine, minus some vocobulary. idk if it ever recieved any standarized writing system so here's my best effort Hej Jendrek wojuje śabli uon nie nosi, hej Jendrek wojuje śabli uon nie nosi, ciupaskom zakrzese jaz do somych kości, Jendrek dobry juhas krzese tego złego, Jendrek dobry juhas krzese tego złego, smyrko ciupazeckom jaz do upodłego, less poetic translation would be: Hej Andy is fighting, doesn't carry a sabre hej Andy is fighting, doesn't carry a sabre he'll struck with his axe, down to the bone Andy's a good shepherd, fights those that are bad Andy's a good shepherd, fights those that are bad will "tickle" with his axe until (the foe) is fallen

I love the music. I didn't know the shepherd in Polish also say juhas, similar like in the Hungarian language juhász.

only Podhalans use the word "juhas". Normaly, polish use "pasterz" instead.

@@secondaryfront We also used to call the shepherd "pásztor". :D There is some similarity in this word as well.

While standing on the top Giewont i saw Yendrek spliting the heads of his opponents open with his trusty ciupaga. Game developers, now hete's a challenge for you - make a fighter dressed up in Krakowiak outfit, his weapon of choice the Szczerbiecs sword, and his theme music - a folk reedition of Krakowski Spleen by Maanam. I dare toy!

I love this song, but it's great how it plays Yendrek up to be a folk hero when he's actually a criminal and a villain. He was Samuel's lackey.
