A lyrics video for the English version of Hello Banana, written and performed by Keiko Yanai. Due to Yanai not being a native English speaker, it can be quite difficult to tell what she is saying at times. However, using a combination of listening carefully and comparing the lyrics with a translation of the lyrics for the Japanese version (which are known), I have for a while been compiling together what I believe are the most accurate lyrics for the song, and I am presenting them here in this video.
Some questions you might have:
Q: How accurate are these lyrics?
A: For most of the lyrics, I am 95%+ confident in their accuracy, though there are a couple of lines which I am still uncertain on.
Q: Are those REALLY the lyrics for the fast section?
A: Yes, really. These lyrics line up very well with the Japanese lyrics, which also make references to sleeping bananas, and generally don't make much sense. This is, as I understand it, a trope with Japanese pop songs where the lyrics often don't make complete sense.
Q: What's with the "harou, harou" part?
A: That part of the song is in Japanese. The background singers are saying "ハロー" (harou), an English loanword and one of the many ways of saying hello in Japanese. For some reason, that part of the Japanese version was never dubbed over for the English version, presumably because "harou" sounds like "hello" anyway when distorted, and thus what you are hearing are the original Japanese vocals for that part of the song.
Q: Where can I find lyrics for the Japanese version?
A: You can find them here: [bananapedia.wi...!]. This page also contains the up-to-date lyrics for the English version, so if any corrections to the lyrics are later made, I will update them there. The Japanese version of the song is also linked to on that page.
Q: Will you make a lyrics video for the Japanese version?
A: I don't know. Maybe if there is enough demand for it. If I do, I will only be including the Romaji version of the lyrics, for the sake of simplicity on my end.
